Background
Given the recognized health effects of visceral fat, the understanding of how diet can modulate changes in the phenotype “waist circumference for a given body mass index (WCBMI)”, a proxy measure of visceral adiposity, is deemed necessary. Hence, the objective of the present study was to assess the association between dietary factors and prospective changes in visceral adiposity as measured by changes in the phenotype WCBMI.Methods and Findings
We analyzed data from 48,631 men and women from 5 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Anthropometric measurements were obtained at baseline and after a median follow-up time of 5.5 years. WCBMI was defined as the residuals of waist circumference regressed on body mass index, and annual change in WCBMI (ΔWCBMI, cm/y) was defined as the difference between residuals at follow-up and baseline, divided by follow-up time. The association between energy, energy density (ED), macronutrients, alcohol, glycemic index (GI), glycemic load (GL), fibre and ΔWCBMI was modelled using centre-specific adjusted linear regression, and random-effects meta-analyses to obtain pooled estimates. Men and women with higher ED and GI diets showed significant increases in their WCBMI, compared to those with lower ED and GI [1 kcal/g greater ED predicted a ΔWCBMI of 0.09 cm (95% CI 0.05 to 0.13) in men and 0.15 cm (95% CI 0.09 to 0.21) in women; 10 units greater GI predicted a ΔWCBMI of 0.07 cm (95% CI 0.03 to 0.12) in men and 0.06 cm (95% CI 0.03 to 0.10) in women]. Among women, lower fibre intake, higher GL, and higher alcohol consumption also predicted a higher ΔWCBMI.Conclusions
Results of this study suggest that a diet with low GI and ED may prevent visceral adiposity, defined as the prospective changes in WCBMI. Additional effects may be obtained among women of low alcohol, low GL, and high fibre intake. 相似文献132.

The kidneys are organs with multiple functions and essential to maintain life. Ablative procedures, such as nephrectomy, diminish nephron mass and can have a potentially negative impact on renal function. We investigated renal function outcome in patients who underwent nephrectomy for renal cell cancer with special emphasize on elderly patients. Data from 104 patients who underwent nephrectomy for kidney cancer in the Department of Urology, University Hospital Rijeka from January 2005 to December 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had a normal concentration of serum creatinine and a normal contralateral kidney before surgery. Renal function, as estimated by the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), was determined before and after nephrectomy using the abbreviated Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation. We compared the eGFR before and after nephrectomy in the patients of different age. The mean preoperative eGFR was 75.2 mL/min, and the mean postoperative eGFR was 52.7 mL/min (p < 0.0001). In the group of patients > or = 65 years old, the mean preoperative GFR was 69.2 mL/min, and the mean postoperative eGFR was 47.4 mL/min (p < 0.0001). Our data indicate that the eGFR significantly decreased after nephrectomy for kidney cancer. In elderly patients, diminished renal function following nephrectomy was more prominent. 相似文献

The placenta sustains the developing fetus throughout gestation and its major functions include nutrition, gas and waste exchange via a variety of passive or active mechanisms. Up to 30 g of calcium (Ca(2+)) actively crosses the trophoblast layer during human pregnancy. The Ca(2+) ion not only plays an important role for skeletal development but is also an essential second messenger. This review is intended to highlight the implications of Ca(2+) signaling during reproduction and specifically placentation. Initially, a Ca(2+) wave induces fertilization of the oocyte. The intracellular Ca(2+) concentration is key for the blastocyst implantation, proper placental development and function. Current knowledge of many proteins involved in placental Ca(2+) regulation and their function in pathologic conditions is largely limited. Recent studies, however, point to alterations in Ca(2+) homeostasis in placental pathologies such as pre-eclampsia (PE) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). A broader understanding of the role of Ca(2+) signaling during human reproduction may offer insight into impaired pregnancy outcomes. 相似文献

neuronal and/or glial damage at the cellular level in migraine, we measured and compared serum levels of S100B which is a
protein marker of glial damage or activation, and neuron specific enolase (NSE) which is a marker of neuronal damage, in migraine
patients and control subjects. Serum levels of S100B and NSE were measured in blood samples from 41 patients with migraine-without
aura taken during a migraine attack (ictal) and in the attack-free period between migraine attacks (interictal) and 35 age-
and sex-matched controls. Patients with migraine-without aura had significantly higher ictal serum levels of S100B and NSE
(P < 0.05, for both) than control subjects; whereas in the interictal phase, there was a significant increment only in S100B
levels (P < 0.05) compared to controls. On the other hand, serum levels of S100B and NSE in ictal and interictal blood samples did
not differ significantly. The findings of increased ictal serum S100B and NSE levels together with increased interictal levels
of S100B suggested that migraine might be associated with glial and/or neuronal damage in the brain and a prolonged disruption
of blood–brain barrier. Increased interictal serum levels of S100B might point out to an insidious and slow damaging process

The cerebellum is one of the most affected brain regions in the course of bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction. We recently demonstrated that unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) reduces oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) survival and impairs oligodendrocyte (OL) differentiation and myelination in co-cultures of dorsal root ganglia neurons and OL. Here, we used organotypic cerebellar slice cultures, which replicate many aspects of the in vivo system, to dissect myelination defects by UCB in the presence of neuroimmune-related glial cells. Our results demonstrate that treatment of cerebellar slices with UCB reduces the number of myelinated fibres and myelin basic protein mRNA expression. Interestingly, UCB addition to slices increased the percentage of OPC and decreased mature OL content, whereas it decreased Olig1 and increased Olig2 mRNA expression. These UCB effects were associated with enhanced gliosis, revealed by an increased burden of both microglia and astrocytes. Additionally, UCB treatment led to a marked increase of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and glutamate release, in parallel with a decrease of interleukin (IL)-6. No changes were observed relatively to IL-1β and S100B secretion. Curiously, both α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist and TNF-α antibody partially prevented the myelination defects that followed UCB exposure. These data point to a detrimental role of UCB in OL maturation and myelination together with astrocytosis, microgliosis, and both inflammatory and excitotoxic responses, which collectively may account for myelin deficits following moderate to severe neonatal jaundice. 相似文献

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with 5‐aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is known to be limited for applications in tumours of large volume mainly due to the limited penetration of topical photosensitization. The results show that micro‐holes created using a femtosecond laser before PDT significantly increased the depth of PDT effect in the healthy tissue. The combination of ultrashort laser ablation technique with PDT showed an important scientific breakthrough related to transportation and delivery of drugs into the deeper regions of the tissue. This study evaluated the probiotic properties (stability at different pH values and bile salt concentration, auto-aggregation and co-aggregation, survival in the presence of antibiotics and commercial drugs, study of β-galactosidase production, evaluation of the presence of genes encoding MapA and Mub adhesion proteins and EF-Tu elongation factor, and the presence of genes encoding virulence factor) of four LAB strains (Lactobacillus casei SJRP35, Leuconostoc citreum SJRP44, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus SJRP57 and Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides SJRP58) which produced antimicrobial substances (antimicrobial peptides). The strains survived the simulated GIT modeled in MRS broth, whole and skim milk. In addition, auto-aggregation and the cell surface hydrophobicity of all strains were high, and various degrees of co-aggregation were observed with indicator strains. All strains presented low resistance to several antibiotics and survived in the presence of commercial drugs. Only the strain SJRP44 did not produce the β-galactosidase enzyme. Moreover, the strain SJRP57 did not show the presence of any genes encoding virulence factors; however, the strain SJRP35 presented vancomycin resistance and adhesion of collagen genes, the strain SJRP44 harbored the ornithine decarboxylase gene and the strain SJRP58 generated positive results for aggregation substance and histidine decarboxylase genes. In conclusion, the strain SJRP57 was considered the best candidate as probiotic cultures for further in vivo studies and functional food products development. 相似文献

The production of bacteriocins by Leuconostoc mesenteroides represents an important opportunity for exploration of their potential use for industrial purpose. The antimicrobial compounds produced by L. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides SJRP55 strain were characterized and purified. Cell-free supernatant of Leuc. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides SJRP55 produced antibacterial compounds against Listeria spp. strains and not inhibiting against Lactobacillus spp. The antimicrobial substances were stable at high temperatures (100 °C for 2 h and 121 °C for 20 min) and low pH (pH 2–4) values, but sensitive to proteolytic enzymes and resistant to α-amylase, lipase and catalase enzymes. The optimal temperature for active peptides production was 25 °C. The antimicrobial compounds were purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, affinity column and reverse-phase chromatography. Mass spectrometry and amino acids analyses showed that the bacteriocins were identical to mesentericin Y105 and B105. The producer strain’s DNA analysis revealed presence of open reading frames possibly coding for virulence factors, such as enterococcal surface protein (esp), collagen adhesion (ace) and intrinsic vancomycin resistance (vanA); however, biogenic amines encoding genes were not observed. Leuc. mesenteroides subsp. mesenteroides SJRP55 is a promising biopreservative culture in fermented milk, and the purified bacteriocins can also be applied in food preservation. 相似文献
