Summary Fifty-seven species of oceanic micronekton and macrozooplankton were collected under pack ice during the winter in the vicinity of the Weddell-Scotia Confluence with a modified opening-closing Tucker trawl. The majority of the 57 species did not vertically migrate and lived deeper during the winter than during the spring or fall. However, despite the short day length, several of the most common mesopelagic fish and crustaceans did migrate. Fish moved into shallower depths at night but apparently most did not continue into the near-freezing upper mixed layer, leaving that zone to the migratory crustaceans. In the upper 1000 m, the dominant species were, in order of decreasing biomass, Euphausia superba, the cnidarian Atolla wyvillei, the ctenophore Beroe sp., and the mesopelagic fish Electrona antarctica, Bathylagus antarcticus and Gymnoscopelus braueri. Thysanoessa macrura and Salpa thompsoni were biomass subdominants. The majority of the dominant species showed little seasonal differences in biomass. However, the biomass of gelatinous species varied considerably with A. wyvillei and Beroe sp. being most abundant and S. thompsoni least abundant during the winter. Incidence of food in the stomachs in several important species was low, suggesting a low impact on their Zooplankton prey. Specimens of S. thompsoni had high quantities of food in their guts but this species was uncommon so its net impact would also have been low. Euphausia superba and the three common mesopelagic fish had significantly lower stomach fullness ratings during the winter than during the fall, suggesting an overall decrease in feeding activity of dominant species during the winter.  相似文献

Loth and Henneberg (1996, Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 99:473–487) identified a single morphological feature of the mandible, the presence or absence of a distinct flexure or angulation of the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus at the level of the occlusal plane, which appears to be an extraordinarily accurate predictor of sex. Using only this feature, Loth and Henneberg were able to predict sex with 94% accuracy in a large sample of mandibles. In this article, we report the results of a blind test of mandibular ramus flexure as a predictor of sex. In our blind test, only 62.5% of the mandibles were correctly sexed, and virtually identical results were obtained when the same sample of mandibles was examined by a second observer. Overall, our results demonstrate that: 1) the association between ramus flexure and sex is weak; 2) the predictive accuracy of Loth and Henneberg's method is better than chance for only one sex, males; and 3) the method is based on a trait that cannot be reliably or consistently identified. BackgroundNosocomial spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been widely reported, but the transmission pathways among patients and healthcare workers (HCWs) are unclear. Identifying the risk factors and drivers for these nosocomial transmissions is critical for infection prevention and control interventions. The main aim of our study was to quantify the relative importance of different transmission pathways of SARS-CoV-2 in the hospital setting.Methods and findingsThis is an observational cohort study using data from 4 teaching hospitals in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, from January to October 2020. Associations between infectious SARS-CoV-2 individuals and infection risk were quantified using logistic, generalised additive and linear mixed models. Cases were classified as community- or hospital-acquired using likely incubation periods of 3 to 7 days. Of 66,184 patients who were hospitalised during the study period, 920 had a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test within the same period (1.4%). The mean age was 67.9 (±20.7) years, 49.2% were females, and 68.5% were from the white ethnic group. Out of these, 571 patients had their first positive PCR tests while hospitalised (62.1%), and 97 of these occurred at least 7 days after admission (10.5%). Among the 5,596 HCWs, 615 (11.0%) tested positive during the study period using PCR or serological tests. The mean age was 39.5 (±11.1) years, 78.9% were females, and 49.8% were nurses. For susceptible patients, 1 day in the same ward with another patient with hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 was associated with an additional 7.5 infections per 1,000 susceptible patients (95% credible interval (CrI) 5.5 to 9.5/1,000 susceptible patients/day) per day. Exposure to an infectious patient with community-acquired Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) or to an infectious HCW was associated with substantially lower infection risks (2.0/1,000 susceptible patients/day, 95% CrI 1.6 to 2.2). As for HCW infections, exposure to an infectious patient with hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 or to an infectious HCW were both associated with an additional 0.8 infection per 1,000 susceptible HCWs per day (95% CrI 0.3 to 1.6 and 0.6 to 1.0, respectively). Exposure to an infectious patient with community-acquired SARS-CoV-2 was associated with less than half this risk (0.2/1,000 susceptible HCWs/day, 95% CrI 0.2 to 0.2). These assumptions were tested in sensitivity analysis, which showed broadly similar results. The main limitations were that the symptom onset dates and HCW absence days were not available.ConclusionsIn this study, we observed that exposure to patients with hospital-acquired SARS-CoV-2 is associated with a substantial infection risk to both HCWs and other hospitalised patients. Infection control measures to limit nosocomial transmission must be optimised to protect both staff and patients from SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The roles of methanofuran and tetrahydromethanopterin as carriers of C1 moieties in the reduction of carbon dioxide to methane were studied in representatives of diverse groups of methanogens, confirming that these roles, first reported for Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, are common for methanogenesis in general. Extracts of the methanogens tested converted formyl-methanofuran and methyl-tetrahydromethanopterin to methane; the extractable cofactors derived from the same methanogens, with one exception, complemented a methanofuran- and tetrahydromethanopterin-deficient enzyme system from M. thermoautotrophicum. The amounts of extractable methanofuran and tetrahydromethanopterin were determined for each representative methanogen.  相似文献

A synthetic poly(styrene-maleic anhydride) copolymer of average molecular weight 470,000 potentiated a testosterone-binding antibody response during immunization of sheep with immunogenic testosterone-3-carboxymethyloxime-serum albumin conjugates. The copolymer had weaker immunostimulatory activity than Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). The minimum effective dose of the copolymer was about 30 mg at which secondary but not primary immune responses could be detected by radioimmunoassay. There was a generally weak anamnestic response in immune sheep as secondary and teritary responses tended to decline promptly from peak values; tertiary antibody titres usually did not exceed secondaries. The use of the copolymer as a solution or emulsion had no apparent effect on its immunoadjuvant activity when administered intramuscularly but the soluble form was inactive when given intraperitoneally. The testosterone-binding antibody that was produced using either the copolymer or FCA had considerable sensitivity to deactivation by mercaptoethanol. The ovulation rate of a group of 20 Merino ewes following immunization with testosterone-serum albumin using the copolymer adjuvant was significantly higher than an equal group of untreated control ewes.  相似文献

The mechanism of cocaine-induced cytotoxicity was investigated in hepatocytes isolated from both male C3H mice and male Sprague-Dawley rats. Cocaine was more cytotoxic to mouse hepatocytes than rat and induced reduced glutathione (GSH) depletion prior to marked increases in cytotoxicity in both systems. In both mouse and rat cells, GSH depletion was accompanied by GSSG production, but in rat cells, quantitative measures suggested that other mechanisms contributed to GSH depletion. No cocaine-induced depletion of protein-thiol groups or generation of protein-glutathione mixed disulfides could be detected in rat cells. Cocaine induced lipid peroxidation, using malondialdehyde (MDA) production as an index of the peroxidation process, in both mouse and rat hepatocytes. Inhibition of MDA production to below control levels using the antioxidant N,N'-diphenyl-phenylene diamine (DPPD) however, had no inhibitory effect on cocaine-induced cytotoxicity in either mouse or rat cells. These data suggest that neither generalized protein thiol depletion nor lipid peroxidation are critical determinants of cocaine-induced cytotoxicity in cellular systems.  相似文献

Thermal resistance of intracellular and freely suspended Listeria monocytogenes that was associated with a milkborne outbreak of listeriosis was studied by using the sealed tube and slug flow heat exchanger methods. Test temperatures for the former method were 57.8, 62.8, 66.1, and 68.9 degrees C (136, 145, 151, and 156 degrees F, respectively); whereas those for the latter method were 66.1, 68.9, 71.7, and 74.4 degrees C (151, 156, 161, and 166 degrees F, respectively). The heating menstruum was sterile, whole milk. The intracellular inoculum was generated from an in vitro phagocytosis reaction by using endotoxin-induced bovine milk phagocytes. The phagocyte population consisted of 88% neutrophils, 8% macrophages, and 4% lymphocytes. Neutrophils harbored the majority of intracellular L. monocytogenes. The mean level of infectivity in the phagocyte population was 43%, and there were 26.1 +/- 19.3 bacteria per cell (10(4) viable cells per ml of test milk). Initial bacterial counts for the freely suspended and intracellular experiments (the latter was based on a sonically disrupted sample) were 10(6) L. monocytogenes cells per ml. Heat-stressed bacteria were recovered by direct plating in parallel with recovery from an enrichment broth; both methods gave comparable results. The predicted D62.8 degrees C (145 degrees F) value for intracellular sealed tube studies was 53.8 s (ZD = 5.6 degrees C [10.0 degrees F]), indicating a safe 33.4 D margin of inactivation for vat pasteurization (62.8 degrees C for 30 min).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We prospectively performed methacholine bronchoprovocation challenges on 46 young smokers to examine the effects of cigarette smoking on airway responsiveness. The subjects, ages 18-35 yr, had no past or present history or physical examination findings of asthma or other lung diseases, rhinitis, allergic diseases, or respiratory infections; were skin test negative to 29 common aeroallergens; and had base-line pulmonary function values greater than 80% predicted. Sixteen of 46 (35%) subjects had a 20% or greater drop in forced expiratory volume in 1 s at a provocative methacholine concentration less than or equal to 25 mg/ml. The degree of methacholine responsiveness was not dependent upon base-line pulmonary function values or the amount of cigarettes consumed, and there was no association between the amount of cigarettes consumed and base-line pulmonary function values. These data suggest that many young asymptomatic nonatopic smokers have increased airway responsiveness to inhaled methacholine without clinically significant hyperreactive airway disease.  相似文献
