Background  

Shuffling of modular protein domains is an important source of evolutionary innovation. Formins are a family of actin-organizing proteins that share a conserved FH2 domain but their overall domain architecture differs dramatically between opisthokonts (metazoans and fungi) and plants. We performed a phylogenomic analysis of formins in most eukaryotic kingdoms, aiming to reconstruct an evolutionary scenario that may have produced the current diversity of domain combinations with focus on the origin of the angiosperm formin architectures.  相似文献

2C DNA content and ploidy level variation of Prunus spinosa and closely related taxa together with Prunus domestica L. and Prunus insititia L. was studied in Slovakia. The aim of the study was to define genome sizes and find differences between closely related taxa within Prunus spinosa sensu lato mentioned in previous works. According to our results, investigated taxa can be divided into three groups according to ploidy level: Prunus spinosa, Prunus dasyphylla, Prunus ×fruticans, Prunus ×dominii and Prunus ×schurii are tetraploids, Prunus ×fechtneri is pentaploid, and P. domestica and P. insititia are hexaploids. Genome size differences within tetraploid taxa were relatively small (Prunus spinosa: 1.40?±?0.02, P. ×domini: 1.44?±?0.01, P. ×fruticans: 1.48?±?0.02, P. ×schurii: 1.44?±?0.02), but statistically significant. Although further research is needed, it seems that the concept of several taxa as product of hybridization between P. spinosa and cultivated plum species has been supported by our study.  相似文献

Fine root ingrowth and mortality of European beech are related to evapotranspiration, cumulative forest floor precipitation, soil temperature and water content, which are affected by forest management and gap creation.

Abstract

The ingrowth and mortality of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) fine roots (diameters <2 mm) were studied in relation to environmental variables describing temperature and water availability at four sites, covering a range in environmental conditions likely to be encountered in Slovenian beech forests. Minirhizotron images were used to determine fine root dynamics in a stand and gap in each of the sites for 12 periods during the 2007–2009 growing seasons. The environmental variables included air and soil temperatures, precipitation, forest floor precipitation, evapotranspiration and soil water contents. For data analysis, the daily mean values for each period for all variables were used. Fine root ingrowth and mortality were higher in the managed stand and gap compared to the old-growth stand and gap, but only significantly correlated with each other in the case of the managed stand. Forest floor precipitation and soil temperature were significant in explaining fine root ingrowth, whereas maximal evapotranspiration, soil temperature and soil water content were more important for fine root mortality. However, the correlations were weak and inconsistent among the four sites. By including site as predictor as well as environmental variables, R 2 values of 0.49 and 0.55 for ingrowth and mortality, respectively, were achieved. Despite this, the relationships between the fine root dynamics and selected environmental factors appeared relatively weak and complex, especially for fine root ingrowth and might be partially related also to differences in successional stages of the forests under study.

Many chronic pulmonary diseases are associated with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and pulmonary vascular remodeling, which is a term that continues to be used to describe a wide spectrum of vascular abnormalities. Pulmonary vascular structural changes frequently increase pulmonary vascular resistance, causing PH and right heart failure. Although rat models had been standard models of PH research, in more recent years the availability of genetically engineered mice has made this species attractive for many investigators. Here we review a large amount of data derived from experimental PH reports published since 1996. These studies using wild-type and genetically designed mice illustrate the challenges and opportunities provided by these models. Hemodynamic measurements are difficult to obtain in mice, and right heart failure has not been investigated in mice. Anatomical, cellular, and genetic differences distinguish mice and rats, and pharmacogenomics may explain the degree of PH and the particular mode of pulmonary vascular adaptation and also the response of the right ventricle.  相似文献

Neuropeptides are crucial regulators of development and various physiological functions but little is known about their identity, expression and function in vectors of pathogens causing serious diseases, such as ticks. Therefore, we have used antibodies against multiple insect and crustacean neuropeptides to reveal the presence of these bioactive molecules in peptidergic neurons and cells of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. These antibodies have detected 15 different immunoreactive compounds expressed in specific central and peripheral neurons associated with the synganglion. Most central neurons arborize in distinct areas of the neuropile or the putative neurohaemal periganglionic sheath of the synganglion. Several large identified neurons in the synganglion project multiple processes through peripheral nerves to form elaborate axonal arborizations on the surface of salivary glands or to terminate in the lateral segmental organs (LSO). Additional neuropeptide immunoreactivity has been observed in intrinsic secretory cells of the LSO. We have also identified two novel clusters of peripheral neurons embedded in the cheliceral and paraspiracular nerves. These neurons project branching axons into the synganglion and into the periphery. Our study has thus revealed a complex network of central and peripheral peptidergic neurons, putative neurohaemal and neuromodulatory structures and endocrine cells in the tick comparable with those found in insect and crustacean neuroendocrine systems. Strong specific staining with a large variety of antibodies also indicates that the tick nervous system and adjacent secretory organs are rich sources of diverse neuropeptides related to those identified in insects, crustaceans or even vertebrates. The endemic species Echinogammarus cari (Karaman 1931) is the only species of this genus present in the Black Sea drainage basin of Croatia. The species is known only from its type locality, the Bistrac spring. Since little is known about the distribution and ecology of this amphipod species, research was conducted to determine the extent of its distribution in the Dobra River and its tributaries, part of which will be flooded on the completion of a 52.5 m high dam in 2009. Sampling was conducted at 10 study sites in the drainage area of the sinking Gornja Dobra and at 19 study sites in the Gojačka Dobra, including measurement of physicochemical parameters. To examine microdistribution of this species, samples were collected on moss and on stony substrate. The species is confined to first 15 km of the Gojačka Dobra, its tributary streams Bistrica and Ribnjak, while it is absent in the drainage area of the Gornja Dobra. At all sites where it was recorded, it coexists with Gammarus fossarum, and its relative abundance was significantly higher on moss microhabitats, while G. fossarum was more abundant on a stony substrate. The downstream decrease in the relative abundance of E. cari could be related to the longitudinal decrease in conductivity and the increase of water temperature fluctuations. After the completion of the dam, 60% of the presently known distribution area of E. cari will be flooded. Consequently, the species is likely to become endangered.  相似文献

The population dynamics of the Tatra vole Microtus tatricus (Kratochvíl, 1952) (Arvicolinae, Rodentia) was monitored as part of a long-term study (1996–2008) of demography of small mammals conducted in Western Tatra Mountains—Roháče, Slovakia. We observed low abundance and population densities and a balanced sex ratio but slightly more frequent captures of females. Reproductively active Tatra voles were significantly larger and heavier than reproductively inactive voles. Reproduction in both sexes tended to begin in early spring, and females moved less than males. Individuals start to reproduce after overwintering. Spatial characteristics differed between sexes, with home range size, distance travelled, and observed range length being non-significantly greater in males than in females, suggesting greater male mobility. Females remained longer on the site than did males. Mature individuals of both sexes exhibited territoriality during the peak of breeding season in spring. Home range overlap occurred more often within females, and mainly in summer and autumn.  相似文献

We analysed linear measurements on various parts of the body and the configuration of 11 landmarks on the wing in a large sample of Ephedrus persicae that had emerged from 13 aphid host species, to assess whether static allometry (a measure of the scaling relationship between traits in a population of individuals at the same ontogenetic stage) accounts for variation in body shape. The analysed specimens came from several localities in Europe, Asia Minor, Japan and South America, and cover a large portion of the distribution area of E. persicae. We found that allometry accounts for variation in body shape among different biotypes within the E. persicae group. The allometric slopes for head size (HD), petiolus width (PETW), mesoscutum width (MSC), and ovipositor sheath length (OVPL) diverged significantly among biotypes, indicating biotype-specific allometries. The analysis of allometric variation in wing shape showed that the pattern and direction of allometric changes also differed among individuals that had emerged from different hosts. Our results (observed divergences in the directions of allometric slopes of particular morphometric traits and wing shape) suggest that allometric relations within E. persicae are not conserved, so that allometry itself changes, evolving differently in aphid parasitoids that emerge from different hosts.  相似文献

Using the parasitological washing out method, we examined the intestines of 428 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) for the presence of Echinococcus multilocularis (Leuckart 1863) and found that the overall prevalence was 2.6% (confidence interval 95% 1.3–4.5%). This is the first extended research reporting on the presence of E. multilocularis in the Slovenian fox population.  相似文献

While data-based modeling is possible in various ways, data-based optimization has not been previously described. Here we present such an optimization technique. It is based on dynamic programming principles and uses data directly from exploratory experiments where the influence of the adjustable variables u were tested at various values. Instead of formulating the performance index J as a function of time t within a cultivation process it is formulated as a function of the biomass x. The advantage of this representation is that in most biochemical production processes J(x) only depends of the vector u of the adjustable variables. This given, mathematical programming techniques allow determining the desired optimal paths u opt (x) from the x-derivatives of J(x). The resulting u opt (x) can easily be transformed back to the u(t) profiles that can then be used in an improved fermentation run. The optimization technique can easily be explained graphically. With numerical experiments the feasibility of the method is demonstrated. Then, two optimization runs for recombinant protein formations in E. coli are discussed and experimental validation results are presented.  相似文献
