What can economics contribute to the study of human evolution?

The revised edition of Paul Seabright’s The Company of Strangers is critically reviewed. Seabright aims to help non-economists participating in the cross-disciplinary study of the evolution of human sociality appreciate the potential value that can be added by economists. Though the book includes nicely constructed and vivid essays on a range of economic topics, in its main ambition it largely falls short. The most serious problem is endorsement of the so-called strong reciprocity hypothesis that has been promoted by several prominent economists, but does not pass muster with biologists.     

Amino acid replacements resulting from super-suppression of nonsense mutants of iso-1-cytochrome c from yeast

The eight class I, set 1 super-suppressor genes, SUP2, SUP3, SUP4, SUP5, SUP6, SUP7, SUP8 and SUP11 are not closely linked and map at distinct loci throughout the genome of yeast. Each of these suppressors causes the production of 5 to 10% of the normal amount of iso-1-cytochrome c when it is individually coupled to the ochre (UAA) mutant cy1-2. All eight iso-1-cytochromes c contain a residue of tyrosine at position 20 which corresponds to the site of the ochre codon. Several of these super-suppressors also were shown to act on cy1-9, but at a much lower efficiency. It was shown that iso-1-cytochrome c from one of the suppressed cy1-9 strains contains a tyrosine at position 2, which corresponds to the site of the ochre codon in this mutant. It is suggested that the gene product of the eight super-suppressors is tyrosine transfer RNA.     

The role of humans in the diversification of a threatened island raptor

Background  

Anthropogenic habitat modifications have led to the extinction of many species and have favoured the expansion of others. Nonetheless, the possible role of humans as a diversifying force in vertebrate evolution has rarely been considered, especially for species with long generation times. We examine the influence that humans have had on the colonization and phenotypic and genetic differentiation of an insular population of a long-lived raptor species, the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus).     

CONDITIONS OF ILLUMINATION AND ZOOSPOROGENESIS IN KLEBSORMIDIUM FLACCIDUM1

The filamentous green alga Klebsormidium flaccidum will produce zoospores when cultured on a diurnal regime of 8-hr light and 16-hr dark. Zoosporogenesis is inhibited by interruption of the dark period with light of sufficient intensity and duration. The relationship between intensity and maximum time of interruption before total inhibition of zoosporogenesis is nonlinear.
