Understanding the influence of landscape change on animal populations is critical to inform biodiversity conservation efforts. A particularly important goal is to understand how urban density affects the persistence of animal populations through time, and how these impacts can be mediated by habitat provision; but data on this question are limited for some taxa. Here, we use data from a citizen science monitoring program to investigate the effect of urbanization on patterns of frog species richness and occurrence over 13 years. Sites surrounded by a high proportion of bare ground (a proxy for urbanization) had consistently lower frog occurrence, but we found no evidence that declines were restricted to urban areas. Instead, several frog species showed declines in rural wetlands with low-quality habitat. Our analysis shows that urban wetlands had low but stable species richness; but also that population trajectories are strongly influenced by vegetation provision in both the riparian zone and the wider landscape. Future increases in the extent of urban environments in our study area are likely to negatively impact populations of several frog species. However, existing urban areas are unlikely to lose further frog species in the medium term. We recommend that landscape planning and management focus on the conservation and restoration of rural wetlands to arrest current declines, and the revegetation of urban wetlands to facilitate the re-expansion of urban-sensitive species. 相似文献

Abstract New methods for generating phosphonate linkages in oligonucleotides are under investigation. Among reagents that react selectively with phosphite triesters and H-phosphonates are (dicarbonyl)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)(η2-olefin)iron complexes. We have found that (dicarbonyl)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)(η2-ethylene)iron reacts with 5′-O-dimethoxytritylnucleoside 3′-phosphite esters to yield (dicarbonyl)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)iron(ethyl)phosphonates. The (dicarbonyl)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)iron-derived nucleoside phosphonates are stable to the conditions commonly used to construct oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite methodology. 相似文献

Twenty-three of 2446 strains of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from mollusks were identified as Ewingella americana both biochemically and by DNA hybridization with strain S6/1111. The biochemical characteristics of the new strains showed few differences from previously reported strains obtained from human clinical specimens. Endemic to the Namib Desert, Fairy Circles (FCs) are vegetation-free circular patterns surrounded and delineated by grass species. Since first reported the 1970''s, many theories have been proposed to explain their appearance, but none provide a fully satisfactory explanation of their origin(s) and/or causative agent(s). In this study, we have evaluated an early hypothesis stating that edaphic microorganisms could be involved in their formation and/or maintenance. Surface soils (0–5cm) from three different zones (FC center, FC margin and external, grass-covered soils) of five independent FCs were collected in April 2013 in the Namib Desert gravel plains. T-RFLP fingerprinting of the bacterial (16S rRNA gene) and fungal (ITS region) communities, in parallel with two-way crossed ANOSIM, showed that FC communities were significantly different to those of external control vegetated soil and that each FC was also characterized by significantly different communities. Intra-FC communities (margin and centre) presented higher variability than the controls. Together, these results provide clear evidence that edaphic microorganisms are involved in the Namib Desert FC phenomenon. However, we are, as yet, unable to confirm whether bacteria and/or fungi communities are responsible for the appearance and development of FCs or are a general consequence of the presence of the grass-free circles. 相似文献

Centrally administered bombesin (0.1-3.5 micrograms, i.c.v.) inhibits gastrointestinal transit of a charcoal meal in a dose-related manner in rats. The roles of pituitary and adrenal glands in the mediation of this effect were assessed. The inhibition of gastrointestinal transit associated with bombesin (0.5 microgram, i.c.v.) was prevented by either hypophysectomy or adrenalectomy. Bombesin-induced inhibition of gastrointestinal transit is therefore mediated through the pituitary-adrenal axis. This is in contrast to bombesin-induced scratching and inhibition of gastric acid secretion which are not markedly influenced by either hypophysectomy or adrenalectomy. 相似文献
