This commentary was aimed at shedding light on the multifunction of bacteriocins mainly those produced by lactic acid bacteria. These antibacterial agents were first used to improve food safety and quality. With the increasing antibiotic resistance concern worldwide, they have been considered as viable agents to replace or potentiate the fading abilities of conventional antibiotics to control human pathogens. Bacteriocins were also shown to have potential as antiviral agents, plant protection agents, and anticancer agents. Bacteriocins were reported to be involved in shaping bacterial communities through inter- and intra-specific interactions, conferring therefore to producing strains a probiotic added value. Furthermore, bacteriocins recently were shown as molecules with a fundamental impact on the resilience and virulence of some pathogens. 相似文献

Inconsistent data exist on the distribution of zoonotic Cryptosporidium species and subtypes in sheep and goats in European countries, and few such data are available from Greece. In this study, 280 fecal specimens were collected from 132 diarrheic lambs and 148 diarrheic goat kids aged 4 to 15?days on 15 farms in northern Greece, and examined for Cryptosporidium spp. using microscopy of Ziehl-Neelsen-stained fecal smears. Cryptosporidium spp. in 80 microscopy-positive fecal specimens (39 from lambs and 41 from goat kids) were genotyped by PCR-RFLP analysis of the small subunit rRNA gene and subtyped by sequence analysis the 60?kDa glycoprotein gene. Among the 33 specimens successfully genotyped, C. parvum was found in 32 and C. xiaoi in one. Seven subtypes belonging to two subtype families (IIa and IId) were identified among the 29 C. parvum specimens successfully subtyped, including IIaA14G2R1 (1/29), IIaA15G2R1 (6/29), IIaA20G1R1 (7/29), IIdA14G2 (1/29), IIdA15G1 (9/29), IIdA16G1 (3/29), and IIdA23G1 (2/29). Lambs were more commonly infected with C. parvum IIa subtypes, whereas goat kids were more with IId subtypes. The results illustrate that C. parvum is prevalent in diarrheic lambs and goat kids in northern Greece and these animals could potentially play a role in epidemiology of human cryptosporidiosis. 相似文献

Background
We investigated the effects of three weeks of renutrition with a normal protein diet on oxidant/antioxidant status in malnourished rats using biochemistry and histology.Methods
Eighteen young Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control group was fed on a normal protein diet; malnourished group was fed on low protein diet and renourished group was fed on low protein diet followed by a normal protein diet. Serum albumin was evaluated. Malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl, superoxide dismutase and catalase levels were determined in the intestine, muscle and liver. Intestinal and hepatic damage were assessed by histological examination.Results
Protein malnutrition resulted in a significant decrease of body weight, albumin level, villus length, intraepithelial lymphocytes counts (IELC) and superoxide dismutase level (liver and muscle). However, catalase activity increased significantly in muscle and gut but there was no difference in liver. In all organs, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl content of malnourished group showed a significant increase. Interestingly, a normal protein diet for three weeks resulted in a return to normal levels of superoxide dismutase, albumin, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl in all organs. Catalase activity decreased in the muscle and gut and exhibited no significant difference in the liver. The renutrition diet enhanced also the recovery of intestinal epithelium by increasing villus length. Hepatic damage of rats fed normal protein diet was markedly reduced (macrovesicular steatosis decreased by 45%).Conclusion
The normal protein diet could improve the oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and organ damage induced by protein malnutrition.86.

The Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima fatty rat is an animal model of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), which is characterized by diastolic dysfunction associated with decreased sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase (SERCA2a). The aim of this study was to examine whether gene transfer of SERCA2a can influence coronary blood flow and cardiomyocyte diameter in this model. DM rats were injected with adenovirus carrying SERCA2a (DM+SERCA) or beta-galactosidase gene (DM+betaGal). Coronary blood flow was measured in cross-circulated excised hearts 3 days after infection. Although in all groups coronary blood flow remained unchanged even if left ventricular (LV) volume or intracoronary Ca(2+) infusion was increased, the DM+SERCA group showed a sustained increase in coronary blood flow compared with the other groups. This result suggests that the sustained high coronary blood flow is a specific response in SERCA2a-overexpressed hearts. Although the LV weight-to-body weight ratio (LV/BW) and cardiomyocyte diameter were higher in the DM and DM+betaGal groups than in the non-DM group, in the DM+SERCA group, these measurements were restored to non-DM size. The percentages of collagen area in the three DM groups was significantly higher than results shown in non-DM rats, and there were no significant differences in collagen area percentage among the three DM groups. These results suggest that a lowered LV/BW by SERCA2a overexpression is due mainly to reduced size of cardiomyocytes without any changes in collagen area percentage. In conclusion, in DM failing hearts, SERCA2a gene transfer can increase coronary blood flow and reduce cardiomyocyte size without reduction in collagen production. 相似文献

Eleven polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated from the necrotrophic phytopathogenic fungus Alternaria dauci based on enriched genomic libraries. In order to assess allelic variability, the microsatellite loci were analysed in a collection of 43 isolates. The number of detected alleles in 11 loci ranged from two to 24 (mean 10.4). Test of cross-species amplification and sequencing of the resulting amplicons showed that some of these microsatellites could be used in different species such as Alternaria solani, Alternaria bataticola and Alternaria zinniae. 相似文献
