Agaricus bisporus grew well in submerged culture in a medium containing malt extract, phosphate, and casein. Moderate growth occurred in defined media containing glucose, asparagine, phenylalanine, vitamins and minerals. Other amino acids did not stimulate growth. Growth was stimulated by vegetable oils, partly due to utilization of the oils, and partly to a more complex mechanism. Oleates had the same effect as vegetable oils; palmitates a lesser one. In shaken flasks maximum yield was reached after 22–24 days and in stirred and aerated fermentors after 8–10 days. Besides dry weight of mycelium, laccase activity was determined. The latter determination is suitable for a rapid estimation of the growth in routine experiments. The flavour of the mycelium was like that of mushrooms but weaker. It was strongest in standing liquid cultures and on solid media. The mycelium grown in submerged culture was suitable as spawn for mushroom culture. Undertakers are a specialized task group of honey bees that remove dead bees from the colony. The mean adult age of undertakers is 12.5 days; this is similar to that of other specialized task groups, such as guards. The mean number of undertakers in colonies was 544. However, because the number of bees expressing this behavior is dependent on the demand for task performance, undertaker estimates vary depending on the experimental technique. Increasing the demand for undertaking resulted in more bees engaging in the task. Depleting the number of undertakers by removal of bees carrying corpses resulted in new bees assuming undertaking duties. These results support a response-threshold model for engagement of worker bees in task performance.  相似文献

Over 100 million women use progesterone therapies worldwide. Despite having immunomodulatory and repair properties, their effects on the outcome of viral diseases outside of the reproductive tract have not been evaluated. Administration of exogenous progesterone (at concentrations that mimic the luteal phase) to progesterone-depleted adult female mice conferred protection from both lethal and sublethal influenza A virus (IAV) infection. Progesterone treatment altered the inflammatory environment of the lungs, but had no effects on viral load. Progesterone treatment promoted faster recovery by increasing TGF-β, IL-6, IL-22, numbers of regulatory Th17 cells expressing CD39, and cellular proliferation, reducing protein leakage into the airway, improving pulmonary function, and upregulating the epidermal growth factor amphiregulin (AREG) in the lungs. Administration of rAREG to progesterone-depleted females promoted pulmonary repair and improved the outcome of IAV infection. Progesterone-treatment of AREG-deficient females could not restore protection, indicating that progesterone-mediated induction of AREG caused repair in the lungs and accelerated recovery from IAV infection. Repair and production of AREG by damaged respiratory epithelial cell cultures in vitro was increased by progesterone. Our results illustrate that progesterone is a critical host factor mediating production of AREG by epithelial cells and pulmonary tissue repair following infection, which has important implications for women’s health.  相似文献

A heat-stable inhibitor of protein synthesis has been isolated from the postribosomal supernatant of rabbit reticulocytes. Its activity is not susceptible to protease treatment but is destroyed by incubation with alkali. Inhibitory activity can be quantitatively recovered in the aqueous phase after phenol extraction and has the ultraviolet absorption spectrum of a nucleic acid. It is concluded that the inhibitor is RNA. The inhibitory activity sediments in the range of 3 S, but it has not been demonstrated whether the inhibitor RNA is a single molecular species. The inhibitory RNA does not affect peptide elongation but rather blocks a step of peptide initiation. It does not interfere with the formation of the ternary complex between initiation factor 2, GTP, and methionyl-tRNAMetf and does not activate a protein kinase phosphorylating initiation factor 2. The inhibitory RNA appears to be a novel type of RNA that inhibits polypeptide initiation at a step involving ribosomal subunits.  相似文献

We describe the enhancement of the antibody response against hepatitis B surface Ag by octadecyl L-tyrosine, a synthetic adjuvant designed to exert its adjuvant effect in a manner similar to that of alum because it binds soluble Ag and releases it slowly from the site of injection. Our data demonstrate that octadecyl L-tyrosine showed a significant enhancement of the antihepatitis B surface Ag response compared to that of alum in the secondary response. The most striking difference between octadecyl L-tyrosine and alum in the antihepatitis B surface Ag antibody response was the absence of IgE-specific antibodies subsequent to immunization of the Ag in octadecyl L-tyrosine. Both the optical isomers of the octadecyl esters of tyrosine were adjuvant active, however, the racemic mixture showed a significantly lowe adjuvant activity. This adjuvant has great potential to be used in humans because it is devoid of side effects as assessed by the lack of acute and chronic toxicity in mice and rats, pyrogenicity in rabbits, formation of granuloma in cats, and adjuvant arthritis in rats.  相似文献
