Touching between leaves of the same plant and/or by neighbouring plants is one of the most common mechanical stimuli to which an individual plant has to respond on a daily basis. The possible ecological implications of a plant’s response to touch on plant–insect interactions have not been explicitly investigated. We examined whether plant response to 1 min daily touching over a period of 6 days affects host plant acceptance by the bird cherry-oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi L. on maize and by the black bean aphid Aphis fabae Scop. on bean, as well as olfactory preference of an aphid predator, seven-spotted ladybird Coccinella septempunctata L. Maize plants responded to touch with significant reduction in plant height, total plant biomass, leaf weight, leaf surface, shoot/root ratio and specific leaf area (SLA), while bean plants responded with reduced stem height and reduced SLA. Both aphid species showed significantly reduced acceptance of touched plants compared with untouched plants. The two aphid species and male and female ladybirds preferred volatiles from untouched plants over those from touched plants. Volatiles in the headspace of touched and untouched plants were collected and identified. Stepwise discriminant analyses identified (E)-nerolidol and (E)-β-caryophyllene in maize and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and an unidentified sesquiterpene in bean as the best discriminating compounds in the volatile profiles of touched plants. Our study suggests that touch-induced changes in plants can potentially affect host plant selection by aphids and habitat searching by ladybirds. Thus, touch-induced changes in plants may have significant effects at higher trophic levels.  相似文献

To understand more fully the structure and evolution of the SOX3 protein, we comparatively analyzed its orthologs in vertebrates. Since complex disorders are associated with human SOX3 polyalanine expansions, our investigation focused on both compositional and evolutionary analysis of various homopolymeric amino acid tracts observed in SOX3 orthologs. Our analysis revealed that the observed homopolymeric alanine, glycine, and proline tracts are mammal-specific, except for one polyglycine tract present in birds. Since it is likely that the SOX3 protein acquired additional roles in brain development in Eutheria, we might speculate that development of novel brain functions during the course of evolution was affected, at least in part, by such structural–functional changes in the SOX3 protein.  相似文献

Great deal of work has been devoted to determine doses from alpha particles emitted by 222Rn and its progeny. In contrast, contribution of beta particles and following gamma radiation to total dose has mostly been neglected so far. The present work describes a study of the detriment of 222Rn progeny for humans due to external exposure. Doses and dose conversion factors (DCFs) were determined for beta and gamma radiation in main organs and remainder tissue of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory phantom, taking into account 222Rn progeny 214Pb and 214Bi distributed in the middle of a standard or typical room with dimensions 4?m?×?5?m?×?2.8?m. The DCF was found to be 7.37?μSv/WLM. Skin and muscle tissue from remainder tissue receives largest dose. Beta and gamma radiation doses from external exposure were compared with alpha, beta, and gamma doses from internal exposure where the source of radioactivity was the lungs. Total doses received in all main organs and remainder tissues were obtained by summing up the doses from external and internal exposure and the corresponding DCF was found to be 20.67?μSv/WLM.  相似文献
