Solar UV‐B radiation has been reported to enhance plant defenses against herbivore insects in many species. However, the mechanism and traits involved in the UV‐B mediated increment of plant resistance are unknown in crops species, such as soybean. Here, we studied defense‐related responses in undamaged and Anticarsia gemmatalis larvae‐damaged leaves of two soybean cultivars grown under attenuated or full solar UV‐B radiation. We determined changes in jasmonates, ethylene (ET), salicylic acid, trypsin protease inhibitor activity, flavonoids, and mRNA expression of genes related with defenses. ET emission induced by Anticarsia gemmatalis damage was synergistically increased in plants grown under solar UV‐B radiation and was positively correlated with malonyl genistin concentration, trypsin proteinase inhibitor activity and expression of IFS2, and the pathogenesis protein PR2, while was negatively correlated with leaf consumption. The precursor of ET, aminocyclopropane‐carboxylic acid, applied exogenously to soybean was sufficient to strongly induce leaf isoflavonoids. Our results showed that in field‐grown soybean isoflavonoids were regulated by both herbivory and solar UV‐B inducible ET, whereas flavonols were regulated by solar UV‐B radiation only and not by herbivory or ET. Our study suggests that, although ET can modulate UV‐B‐mediated priming of inducible plant defenses, some plant defenses, such as isoflavonoids, are regulated by ET alone. 相似文献

Seawater enrichments of marine bacteria clustered in 20- to 50-(mu)m-wide bands near air-water interfaces. The cells within the band travelled at up to 212 (mu)m s(sup-1) and at an average speed of 163 (mu)m s(sup-1). Mean cell speeds peaked mid-run at 187 (mu)m s(sup-1). At the end of the run, bacteria reversed direction rather than randomly reorienting. The duration of the stops during reversal was estimated at 18 ms, six to seven times shorter than that found in enteric bacteria. Cells hundreds of micrometers from the band travelled at half the speed of the bacteria in the band. The fastest isolate from the seawater enrichment was identified as Shewanella putrefaciens and had an average speed of 100 (mu)m s(sup-1) in culture. Air-water interfaces produced no clustering or speed changes in isolates derived from enrichments. Salinity and pH, however, both influenced speed. The speed and reversal times of the seawater enrichments indicate that the bacteria in them are better adapted for clustering around small point sources of nutrients than are either enteric or cultured marine bacteria. 相似文献

Background:
Vascular growth is a prerequisite for adipose tissue (AT) development and expansion. Some AT cytokines and hormones have effects on vascular development, like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF‐A), angiopoietin (ANG‐1), ANG‐2 and angiopoietin‐like protein‐4 (ANGPTL‐4).Methods:
In this study, the independent and combined effects of diet‐induced weight loss and exercise on AT gene expression and proteins levels of those angiogenic factors were investigated. Seventy‐nine obese males and females were randomized to: 1. Exercise‐only (EXO; 12‐weeks exercise without diet‐restriction), 2. Hypocaloric diet (DIO; 8‐weeks very low energy diet (VLED) + 4‐weeks weight maintenance diet) and 3. Hypocaloric diet and exercise (DEX; 8‐weeks VLED + 4‐weeks weight maintenance diet combined with exercise throughout the 12 weeks). Blood samples and fat biopsies were taken before and after the intervention.Results:
Weight loss was 3.5 kg in the EXO group and 12.3 kg in the DIO and DEX groups. VEGF‐A protein was non‐significantly reduced in the weight loss groups. ANG‐1 protein levels were significantly reduced 22‐25% after all three interventions (P < 0.01). The ANG‐1/ANG‐2 ratio was also decreased in all three groups (P < 0.05) by 27‐38%. ANGPTL‐4 was increased in the EXO group (15%, P < 0.05) and 9% (P < 0.05) in the DIO group. VEGF‐A, ANG‐1, and ANGPTL‐4 were all expressed in human AT, but only ANGPTL‐4 was influenced by the interventions.Conclusions:
Our data show that serum VEGF‐A, ANG‐1, ANG‐2, and ANGPTL‐4 levels are influenced by weight changes, indicating the involvement of these factors in the obese state. Moreover, it was found that weight loss generally was associated with a reduced angiogenic activity in the circulation. 相似文献35.

Ecosystem acidification and eutrophication resulting from increased deposition of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) are issues
of increasing global concern. Consequently, costly policy decisions are being implemented to decrease nitrogen oxide (NO
x
) emissions. Although declining DIN deposition along with rapid declines of DIN in surface waters have been reported in parts
of Europe, the same observation is just emerging in North America. Here we find a significant decline in bulk deposition NO3
− during the later part of a 28-year record in southcentral Ontario, Canada. Despite high N retention and substantial inter-annual
variability in the long-term record due to periods of drought, we find significant declines in annual NO3
− concentrations and export at six out of 11 streams that drain upland-dominated catchments. In contrast, five streams draining
primarily wetland-dominated catchments with lower levels of NO3
− show no decreasing trend in NO3
− concentration or export. The rapid response in stream NO3
− to declining atmospheric inputs was observed at sites with historically moderate inputs of DIN (~870 mg m−2 y−1) in bulk deposition. Topographic features such as slope, and related catchment features including wetland cover, appear to
influence which catchments will respond positively to declining DIN deposition. These findings force us to revise our original

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a sexually-transmitted gram-negative bacterium, causes gonorrhoea in humans. The min genes of N. gonorrhoeae are involved in cell division site selection with oxyR co-transcribed with these genes. The mutation in min genes and oxy R cause aberrant cell morphology and aggregation patterns, respectively. Our objective was to assess the contribution of neisserial min operon cell division genes i.e. minC, minD and oxyR in virulence. Compared to the N. gonorrhoeae parental strain (Ng CH811Str(R)), its isogenic mutants with insertionally inactivated minC (Ng CSRC1), minD (Ng CJSD1) or oxyR (Ng KB1) showed reduced adherence to and invasion of urethral epithelial cells. This may be explained by defective microcolony formation in the mutant strains, possibly owing to abnormal morphology and aggregation. The expression levels of surface virulence factors like Opa, pilin and lipooligosaccharide in the mutants were unchanged relative to Ng CH811Str(R). Furthermore, in urethral epithelial cells, the min and oxyR mutants induced the release of proinflammatory cytokines like IL6 and IL8 to levels similar to that induced by the parental strain. Taken together, our studies indicate that inactivation of minC, minD or oxyR in N. gonorrhoeae attenuates its ability to bind to and invade urethral epithelial cells without altering its potential to induce IL6 and IL8 release. 相似文献

The Upper Guinean Forests of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia contain high levels of freshwater biodiversity. The Guinean Range and associated Fouta Djallon highlands separate two biogeographical provinces in the region and served as a refugium during past climatic fluctuations. While many species of freshwater fishes are restricted to one biogeographical province or the other, some are reported to occur on both sides of the divide. Here, we examine the molecular and morphological diversity of an endemic small African barb, Enteromius foutensis, reported to occur in both provinces. This integrative analysis revealed unrecognized diversity and suggests recent, or ongoing, events that facilitated geodispersal and subsequent divergence in the region. The molecular analysis revealed three divergent and well‐supported populations within E. foutensis. Accounting for allometric shape variation allowed us to observe diagnostic morphological differences among the populations. Enteromius foutensis sensu stricto is restricted to the Little Scarcies drainage in Guinea and northern Sierra Leone. Our study revealed two candidate species distinct from E. foutensis. One is likely a narrow endemic restricted to a small area in the Konkouré River basin; the other candidate species inhabits the upper Senegal and Gambie River drainages. How these patterns of diversity compare with other freshwater species from the Fouta Djallon highlands and the conservation status of these candidate species are also discussed. 相似文献

Dynamics of Imbibition in Phaseolus vulgaris L. in Relation to Initial Seed Moisture Content 下载免费PDF全文
The seed moisture level marking the onset of imbibitional injury (breakpoint) was determined for two cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cvs `Tendercrop' (TC) and `Kinghorn Wax' (KW). At 20°C the breakpoints were 0.15 gram H2O/gram dry weight (gram per gram) for TC and 0.11 gram per gram for KW. When seeds were imbibed at 5°C, the breakpoints were 0.19 gram per gram (TC) and 0.16 gram per gram (KW). Below the breakpoint germination changed 4.6%/0.01 gram per gram for all treatments. Imbibition rates were maximal at 0.07 gram per gram and 0.33 gram per gram after 20 minutes imbibition. Rates of electrolyte leakage were correlated with the imbibition rate maximum at 0.07 gram per gram but were unaffected by the maximum at 0.33 gram per gram. The transition from tightly bound to semibound water occurred at 0.09 gram per gram and 0.11 gram per gram for KW and TC, respectively. T1 values increased exponentially as seed moisture decreased from 0.47 gram per gram to 0.05 gram per gram. 13C-NMR sugar signals increased at moisture levels above 0.14 gram per gram and plateaued at approximately 0.33 gram per gram seed moisture. These results suggest that the breakpoint moisture level for imbibitional damage is a function of temperature while the injury process is similar at both 5 and 20°C. Imbibition and leakage rate maxima reflect transitions in the states of seed water. NMR data support the application of the Water Replacement Hypothesis to seeds. Thus, imbibitional injury may be related to specific, temperature dependent moisture levels that are determined by water binding characteristics in the seed tissue. 相似文献
