This study investigated the relationship between spatial variations in predation risk and abundance of northern redbelly dace Phoxinus eos at both macroscale (littoral v. pelagic zones) and microscale (structured v. open water habitats in the littoral zone) of Canadian Shield lakes. Minnow traps were placed in both structured and open water habitats in the littoral zone of 13 Canadian Shield lakes, and estimates of the relative predation risk of P. eos in both the pelagic and the littoral zones were obtained from tethering experiments. Results showed that (1) the mean abundance of P. eos in the littoral zone was positively correlated with the relative predation risk in the pelagic zone, (2) P. eos preferentially used structured over open water habitats in the littoral zone and (3) this preference was not related to the relative predation risk in the littoral zone but decreased as the relative predation risk increased in the pelagic zone. At the lake level, these results support the hypothesis that P. eos enter the littoral zone to avoid pelagic piscivores. At the littoral zone level, the results do not necessarily contradict the widely accepted view that P. eos preferentially use structured over open habitats to reduce their predation risk, but suggest that flexibility in antipredator tactics ( e.g. shelter use v. shoaling) could explain the spatial distribution of P. eos between structured and open water habitats.  相似文献

The substitution around these rings as well as the nature of the substituent on nitrogen is explored. Many animal species tolerate different amounts of predation risk based on environmental conditions and the individual's own condition, often accepting greater risk when energetically stressed. We studied the sensitive plant Mimosa pudica to see whether it too accepts greater risk of predation when less light energy is available. This plant displays a defensive behavior of rapidly folding its leaves when stimulated by touch, thereby decreasing visibility to herbivores. Averting herbivory involves a trade-off because leaf closure results in a reduction in light foraging. We manipulated the light environment of individual M. pudica plants and recorded the time it took a plant to reopen its leaves following stimulation as a measure of tolerance of predation risk. As predicted by theory, avoidance behavior was sustained longer under high light conditions than under more light-limited conditions. These findings suggest this species balances the risk and reward of antiherbivore behavior in relation to current environmental conditions and that behavioral-ecological theory is a useful framework for understanding plant responses to predators.  相似文献

Breath‐hold divers are strongly interacting species whose top–down influence on aquatic communities is shaped by factors governing their diving decisions. Although some of these factors (e.g. physiological constraints, energetic needs) have been scrutinized, the possibility that predation risk influences diving behavior has been largely overlooked, and no study to date has asked if anti‐predator responses by divers depend on foraging mode. We contrasted dive cycle changes by herbivorous dugongs Dugong dugon using two foraging tactics – cropping, which always permits anti‐predator vigilance, and excavation, which limits surveillance at depth – in response to temporal variation in tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier abundance. Dugongs responded to increasing shark abundance (one component of predation risk) by diving more frequently without changing their surface times and thereby spending a greater proportion of time at the surface, but only while excavating. When threatened, in other words, excavating dugongs sacrificed foraging time at depth to facilitate shark detection. In contrast, cropping dugongs at risk from sharks were able to continue diving and foraging normally. By implication, future studies should consider the influence of predation risk on diving decisions, even by large‐bodied species, and the possibility that behavioral responses by divers to predators may vary with foraging mode.  相似文献

Summary This paper attempts to determine the effect on the number of prey eaten by predators of the addition of the component avoidance learning by prey to a computer model of the predation process developed by Holling. Generality was retained by concentrating upon a basic aspect of the prey's behaviour, its distance of reaction to an approaching predator. The zebra danio (Brachydanio rerio), a small freshwater fish, was used as an analogue of a general vertebrate prey. The predator used was the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).Previous work (Dill, 1973b) showed that prey reactive distance increased with increasing experience with the predator. In the present study, this increased prey reactive distance is shown to increase predator pursuit time and hypothesized to decrease predator pursuit success. These relationships were expressed mathematically and built into Holling's (1965, 1966) model of the predation process, along with an equation describing the way in which reactive distance increases following an unsuccessful attack. Other changes necessitated in the model by the addition of the avoidance learning component included: a) Modifications of the calculation of search time to remove a previously implicit time spent unsuccessfully pursuing prey, and to correct the density of prey to account for those whose reactive distances exceed that of the predator and are therefore not susceptible to discovery; b) Addition of a new subroutine (CHASE) to calculate pursuit time, unsuccessful pursuit time, pursuit success, and strike success; c) Changes in subroutine ADCOM to assign prey to different classes (with different reactive distances) according to the number of times they have been unsuccessfully attacked; and d) Addition of a stochastic element via random numbers to determine the class to which an attacked prey belongs, the time to refuge, and the predator's strike success.Simulation was used to explore the consequences of these additions. The capability of learning substantially increased the prey's probability of surviving subsequent attack. Addition of an avoidance learning component caused declines in the predator's functional responses to both prey and predator density. Proteins fold to unique compact native structures. Perhaps other polymers could be designed to fold in similar ways. The chemical nature of the monomer “alphabet” determines the “energy matrix” of monomer interactions—which defines the folding code, the relationship between sequence and structure. We study two properties of energy matrices using two-dimensional lattice models: uniqueness, the number of sequences that fold to only one structure, and encodability, the number of folds that are unique lowest-energy structures of certain monomer sequences. For the simplest model folding code, involving binary sequences of H (hydrophobic) and P (polar) monomers, only a small fraction of sequences fold uniquely, and not all structures can be encoded. Adding strong repulsive interactions results in a folding code with more sequences folding uniquely and more designable folds. Some theories suggest that the quality of a folding code depends only on the number of letters in the monomer alphabet, but we find that the energy matrix itself can be at least as important as the size of the alphabet. Certain multi-letter codes, including some with 20 letters, may be less physical or protein-like than codes with smaller numbers of letters because they neglect correlations among inter-residue interactions, treat only maximally compact conformations, or add arbitrary energies to the energy matrix.  相似文献

Summary Pea aphids have several alternative responses to the detection of alarm pheromone produced by conspecifics. One of these, dropping from the feeding site to the ground, is potentially costly owing to the risk of desiccation-induced mortality on the ground before another host plant can be reached. Both dropping and walking from the feeding site incur a cost due to lost feeding opportunity. The aphids' decision as to which anti-predator tactic to use should be sensitive to the costs of their behaviour. Consequently, aphids should be less likely to drop when the risk of desiccation is higher, and less likely to drop or walk when the lost opportunity cost is higher. We tested these predictions by manipulating climatic severity (temperature and humidity) and host quality, respectively. As predicted, aphids are less likely to drop or walk in response to pheromone when feeding on high quality than on low quality hosts, and less likely to drop when the environment is hot and dry than when it is more benign. The latter is true whether the aphids are feeding on real or simulated leaves. Since all aphids were of the same clone, these results show that individual aphid genotypes possess the ability to adaptively modify their escape behaviour with changes in prevailing conditions. A number of other behavioural observations in the aphid literature may be interpreted in an economic or cost-benefit framework. The approach holds considerable promise for understanding many aspects of the anti-predator behaviour of aphids and other animals.  相似文献

The environment of the N-terminal amino groups of glycophorins AM and AN has been studied using13C-NMR spectroscopy and pyrylium salts as amino-blocking agents. The extent of amino blocking was monitored by13C-reductive methylation of the residual free amino groups. The pyrylium ions reacted with the N-terminal amino groups of the two glycophorins at almost identical rates, which is thought to indicate that the overriding steric bulk of the pyrylium salt may determine the rate of the reaction. The difference in the rates of modification of lysine residues of glycophorins AM and AN by the pyrylium ions did indicate that there may exist an environmental difference around the lysine residues between the two glycophorins. This environmental difference may result from solution aggregation of the glycophorin A molecules or from some differences in the pKa values of the five lysine residues found in glycophorins AM and AN.  相似文献
