Several recent studies have shown that plant invasions can occur in resource-poor and relatively undisturbed habitats. It is, therefore, important to investigate whether and how life-history traits of species invasive in such habitats differ from those of species that are only invasive in disturbed and resource rich habitats. We compared the growth of seedlings of native and invasive tree species from nutrient-poor secondary forests in the tropical Seychelles. We hypothesised that the relative performance of the two groups would change predictably along resource gradients, with native species performing better at low levels of resource availability and invasive species performing better at higher levels. To test this hypothesis, we performed a common garden experiment using seedlings of six invasive and seven native tree species grown under three levels of light (65, 11 and 3.5% of ambient light) and two of nutrients (low and high). Due to large variation among species, differences in growth rates (RGR) were not significant among seedlings of the native and the invasive species. However, seedlings of the invasive species showed higher specific leaf areas (SLA) and higher leaf nutrient contents than seedlings of the native species. They also exhibited greater plasticity in biomass and nutrient allocation (i.e., greater plasticity in LAR, RSR and leaf nutrient contents) in response to varying resource availability. However, differences between the mean values of these parameters were generally small compared with variation within groups. We conclude that successful invaders on nutrient-poor soils in the Seychelles are either stress-tolerant, possessing growth traits similar to those of the native species, or fast-growing but adapted to nutrient-poor soils. In contrast, the more typical, fast-growing alien species with no particular adaptations to nutrient-poor soils seem to be restricted to relative nutrient-rich sites in the lowlands. The finding—that some introduced species thrive in resource-poor habitats—suggests that undisturbed habitats with low resource availability may be less resistant to plant invasions than was previously supposed.  相似文献

Conditional control of plant cell function and development relies on appropriate signal perception, signal integration and processing. The development of high throughput technologies such as proteomics and interactomics has enabled the identification of protein interaction networks that mediate signal processing from inputs to appropriate outputs. Such networks can be depicted in graphical representations using nodes and edges allowing for the immediate visualization and analysis of the network's topology. Hubs are network elements characterized by many edges (often degree grade k ≥ 5) which confer a degree of topological importance to them. The review introduces the concept of networks, hubs and bottlenecks and describes four examples from plant science in more detail, namely hubs in the redox regulatory network of the chloroplast with ferredoxin, thioredoxin and peroxiredoxin, in mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinase signal processing, in photomorphogenesis with the COP9 signalosome, COP1 and CDD, and monomeric GTPase function. Some guidance is provided to appropriate internet resources, web repositories, databases and their use. Plant networks can be generated from existing public databases and this type of analysis is valuable in support of existing hypotheses, or to allow for the generation of new concepts or ideas. However, intensive manual curating of in silico networks is still always necessary.  相似文献

Fibrillin microfibrils are polymeric structures present in connective tissues. The importance of fibrillin microfibrils to connective tissue function has been demonstrated by the multiple genetic disorders caused by mutations in fibrillins and in microfibril-associated molecules. However, knowledge of microfibril structure is limited, largely due to their insolubility. Most previous studies have focused on how fibrillin-1 is organized within microfibril polymers. In this study, an immunochemical approach was used to circumvent the insolubility of microfibrils to determine the role of fibrillin-2 in postnatal microfibril structure. Results obtained from studies of wild type and fibrillin-1 null tissues, using monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies with defined epitopes, demonstrated that N-terminal fibrillin-2 epitopes are masked in postnatal microfibrils and can be revealed by enzymatic digestion or by genetic ablation of Fbn1. From these studies, we conclude that fetal fibrillin polymers form an inner core within postnatal microfibrils and that microfibril structure evolves as growth and development proceed into the postnatal period. Furthermore, documentation of a novel cryptic site present in EGF4 in fibrillin-1 underscores the molecular complexity and tissue-specific differences in microfibril structure.  相似文献

Clostridium butyricum can convert glycerol into 1,3-propanediol, thereby generating unfortunately a high amount of acetate, formate and butyrate as inhibiting by-products. We have proposed a novel mixed culture comprising C. butyricum and a methane bacterium, Methanosarcina mazei, to relieve the inhibition and to utilise the by-products for energy production. In order to examine the efficiency of such a mixed culture, metabolic modelling of the culture system was performed in this work. The metabolic networks for the organisms were reconstructed from genomic and physiological data. Several scenarios were analysed to examine the preference of M. mazei in scavenging acetate and formate under conditions of different substrate availability, including methanol as a co-substrate, since it may exist in glycerol solution from biodiesel production. The calculations revealed that if methanol is present, the methane production can increase by 130%. M. mazei can scavenge over 70% of the acetate secreted by C. butyricum.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We conducted a phase I clinical immunotherapy trial of CML to evaluate the safety of a clinical-grade leukemic DC product standardized for purity and mature phenotype. METHODS: We injected autologous DC into patients in late chronic or accelerated phases of CML. The patients received mature CD83+ and bcr-abl+ DC prepared from CD14+ cells. Two cohorts of three patients received four injections each of 3 x 10(6) DC and 15 x 10(6) DC/injection, respectively. The first patient was studied before imatinib mesylate (IM) was available, four patients were treated concurrently with IM therapy and one did not tolerate the IM and was off the drug at the time of DC therapy. IM effects on WBC counts precluded DC preparation in numbers sufficient for further dose escalation. The first patient received DC s.c. and all subsequent patients received DC into a cervical lymph node under ultrasound guidance. RESULTS: DC injections were well tolerated. We observed no clinical responses. T cells drawn later in the course of therapy were more sensitive to stimulation by CML DC in vitro. DISCUSSION: The increase in T-cell sensitivity to CML-specific stimulation that accompanied active immunization by CML DC justifies further clinical studies, possibly with modifications such as an increased frequency and number of DC injections.  相似文献

The publication of Volume 50 of the Biometrical Journal (formerly Biometrische Zeitschrift) in 2008 provides the perfect opportunity to describe the history of the present journal. We report on the long period of preparation for the journal within the German Region (DR) of the International Biometric Society (IBS). A special paragraph is dedicated to the first ten volumes. We emphasize the role of the journal as a bond between German biometricians on both sides of the border between the two German nations and IBS regions at that time. In this study we examined the mechanism of particle capture in Mytilus edulis, using radioactive-label clearance studies, progressive fixation, and scanning electron microscopy to visualize in detail the cirri and their range of motion. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to observe the interaction of cirri with 1 mucrom fluorescent latex particles on live strips of control and serotonin-treated isolated gill tissue. The gills of M. edulis possess large, complex latero-frontal cirri composed of 18-26 pairs of cilia. Particles that were intercepted by the cirri were transferred to the water current on the frontal surface of the filament where they were propelled toward the ventral particle groove. Clearance studies demonstrated that M. edulis removed Escherichia coli from 5 degrees C seawater bathing medium at 4.9 ml g(-1) dry tissue min(-1). When the gills were exposed to 10(-3) M serotonin, the latero-frontal cirri stopped moving and became fixed in a flexed position that partially blocked the frontal surface of the filament. Clearance studies demonstrated that removal of E. coli from the seawater bathing medium was reduced 90% to 0.5 ml g(-1) dry tissue min(-1) when 10(-3) M serotonin was present. These data demonstrated that for small particles (< 2 microm) in the near field, movement of cirri was essential for successful capture either by direct contact or with water acting as a hydromechanical coupler.  相似文献
