Anecdotal evidence abounds that conflicts between two individuals can spread across networks to involve a multitude of others. We advance a cultural transmission model of intergroup conflict where conflict contagion is seen as a consequence of universal human traits (ingroup preference, outgroup hostility; i.e. parochial altruism) which give their strongest expression in particular cultural contexts. Qualitative interviews conducted in the Middle East, USA and Canada suggest that parochial altruism processes vary across cultural groups and are most likely to occur in collectivistic cultural contexts that have high ingroup loyalty. Implications for future neuroscience and computational research needed to understand the emergence of intergroup conflict are discussed.  相似文献

This research was delineated to explore the efficacy of selenium nanoparticles delivered in liposomes (L-Se) in the mitigation of type-2 diabetes mellitus. Adult female Wistar rats were assigned into four groups: group I, the normal control group in which the rats received normal saline solution orally; group II, the diabetic control group in which the rats were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ) for induction of diabetes; group III, the metformin (Met)-treated group in which the diabetic rats were treated orally with Met; and group IV, the L-Se-treated group in which the diabetic rats were treated orally with L-Se. All treatments were delivered for 21 days. Blood and pancreas tissue samples were obtained for biochemical analysis, immunohistochemical examinations, and histopathological investigation. The L-Se-treated group showed significant drop in serum glucose and pancreatic malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels associated with significant rise in serum insulin and pancreatic glutathione, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR) values, in addition to significant improvement in the immunohistochemical indices (insulin and glucagon). Aforementioned results are appreciated by the histopathological findings of pancreatic tissue. In conclusion, our data have brought about compelling evidence favoring the antidiabetic potency of elemental selenium nanoparticles delivered in liposomes through preservation of pancreatic β cell integrity with consequent increment of insulin secretion and in turn glucose depletion, repression of oxidative stress, potentiation of the antioxidant defense system, and inhibition of pancreatic inflammation.  相似文献

The current study aimed to discuss the impact of total sulfur amino acids (TSAA) %, photoperiod, and their interaction on growth performance, carcass and blood indices of broiler chicks. A total of 300 unsexed IR broiler chicks one-week old were used in a factorial arrangement (2 × 3), including two photoperiod systems (22 L: 2 D and 16 L: 8 D) and three experimental rations having three grades of Met + Cyst (TSAA) (70%, 85% and 100% of digestible lysine in starter and finisher diets). Results revealed that the higher LBW and BWG were noticed in birds given TSAA at grades of 1.1 or 0.90 % under 22L: 2D photoperiod at five weeks of age and the whole experimental period (1–5 weeks of age), respectively. The highest live body weight (LBW (and body weight gain (BWG) were recorded in birds received 1.1% TSAA under the long photoperiod compared to the control and the other groups. Birds fed 1.3% TSAA consumed more feed than the other groups. The opposite was found in birds fed 1.1% TSAA under the short photoperiod (16L: 8D). The best feed conversion (FCR) was detected by birds fed 1.1% and 0.90% TSAA diets during the whole experimental period. All carcass traits studied were significantly influenced by TSAA levels, except for the relative weights of abdominal fat and spleen. The interaction effect on was significant on all carcass traits except spleen %. In conclusion, the addition of TSAA at level 1.1 and 0.9 % to starter and finisher diets under a long photoperiod regime improved broiler’s performance, carcass traits, and blood parameters studied.  相似文献

Human biospecimens provide the basis for research, leading to a better understanding of human disease biology and discovery of new treatments that are tailored to individual patients with cancer or other common complex diseases. The collection, processing, preservation, storage and providing access to these resources are key activities of biobanks. Biobanks must ensure proper quality of samples and data, ethical and legal compliance as well as transparent and efficient access procedures. The standards for biobanking outlined herein are intended to be implemented in biobanks and to supply researchers with high‐quality samples fitted for an intended use.

In order to develop a fluorescence polarization (FP) assay for calcium binding proteins, a fluorescent peptides based library of 1328 compounds has been synthesized. The use of this library has been validated by setting up a FP-high-throughput screening (FP-HTS) assay for calmodulin using the synthetic gene product (synCaM). With this assay, a set of 880 FDA approved compounds was screened. Besides the promazine class, we discovered two new classes of compounds that interact with calmodulin in a calcium dependent manner. One class has compounds with anti-histaminic/spasmolytic activities, and the other one are detergents with antibacterial activities.  相似文献

This study investigates the potential of essential oils from commonly used medical and culinary herbs in Lebanon as an environmentally safe measure to control the seaside mosquito, Ochlerotatus caspius. The composition of essential oils extracted from parsley seeds and leaves, alpine thyme inflorescences, anis seeds, and coriander fruits were analyzed by GC-MS, and the major components of these oils were found to be thymol, sabinene, carvacrol, anethole, and linalool, respectively. Mosquito larvicidal assays were conducted to evaluate the LC(50) and LC(90) after 24 and 48h of the essential oils and their major constituents. All of the tested oils proved to have strong larvicidal activity (LC(50): 15-156ppm) against Oc. caspius fourth instars, with the most potent oil being thyme inflorescence extract, followed by parsley seed oil, aniseed oil, and then coriander fruit oil. Toxicity of each oil major constituent was also estimated and compared to a reported larvicidal compound, eugenol.  相似文献

Determination of the somaclonal variation of in vitro-propagated plants is crucial to determine the appropriatemicropropagation protocol and growth regulators for commercial scale multiplication. In this research, nine multiplication media (MM) augmented with different concentrations of 6-benzyl adenine (BA), Kinetin (Kin), andThidiazuron (TDZ), Three rooting media (RM) supplemented with three levels of α-naphthalene acetic acid(NAA) and three types of soil mixtures (v/v); Coco peat/Vermiculite/Sand (CVS), Peat moss/Perlite/Sand(PPS) and Peat moss/Perlite (PP) were used in the micropropagation protocol of daylily plants. MM2 showedthe maximum shoot length and the number of leaves, while MM9 showed the maximum number of shoots.The RM1 showed the maximum root length and the number of roots. During acclimatization, CVS, PPS, andPP soil mixture showed similar performance except the CVS mixture showed lower performance regarding plantheight and diameter. The genetic fidelity of micropropagated plants was evaluated using Start Codon Targeted(SCoT) Markers. Six SCoT primers amplified 51 scorable bands with an approximate range from 146 bp to1598 bp size. Thirty one out of 51 loci were presented in the mother plants. 40 loci were polymorphic, 11 weremonomorphic and 7 were unique. The amplification patterns of the micropropagated plants demonstrated genetic integrity to the mother plant ranging from 84.32 to 47.06 and somaclonal variations ranging from 52.94 with5 mg/l BA pathway to 15.68 with 1mg/l TDZ pathway, thus demonstrating that the homogeneity and the variation of the micropropagated plants affected by the type and the quantity of the plant growth regulator used duringmultiplication subcultures. This research can be successfully used for other ornamental and medicinal plants’ bulkmultiplication, germplasm conservation, and future genetic improvement.  相似文献

We reported earlier that monocytes and macrophages from patients with type I Gaucher disease have a decreased capacity to generate superoxide anion (O(2)(-)) on stimulation with opsonized S. aureus or formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine. In this study, various forms of the cell-free assay system were used to probe the hypothesis that glucocerebroside (GC) accumulating in Gaucher patients' phagocytes may interfere with the activation of NADPH oxidase. Xanthine/xanthine oxidase assay was applied to explore the possibility that GC may scavenge O(2)(-). We found that addition of GC to the crude, semirecombinant or fully purified cell-free systems inhibited activation of NADPH oxidase in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of GC could be overcome by increased concentrations of p47(phox) and p67(phox). In contrast, O(2)(-) generation was not decreased by GC added to the assembled, catalytically active enzyme complex. In the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system, GC had no effect on the generation of O(2)(-). These data indicate that assembly of the respiratory burst oxidase of phagocytic cells may be a possible target of the pathologic actions of GC.  相似文献

This present study includes twelve species that represent the Ficus genus, namely; aspera, carica, tinctoria subsp. gibbosa, hirta, hispida, neriifolia, palmata, pumila, racemosa, septica, sur, and sycomorus, belonging to the Moraceae family. The species samples were collected from various locations in Egypt. The study focused on the anatomical and molecular characteristics of mature foliage leaves. Since the identification and classification of taxa are highly dependent on the anatomical features of leaves, the anatomical characteristics were recorded in the form of a comparison between the examined plants in the data matrix. This study aims to contribute to the identification of the studied species based on the anatomical details of the matured leaves. Anatomical characterization includes the variations in upper and lower epidermal layers that are covered by a thin or thick cuticle; the number of palisade and spongy layers; crystals; secretory elements; lithocysts; the midrib zone has parenchyma associated with mechanical tissue, vascular system, and investigation of trichomes; on the other hand, in the current study, the phylogenetic analysis was conducted by using the ITS and 5.8 S sequences. From the analysis of all the available data, it could be stated that there is an overall agreement with the anatomical character dendrogram.  相似文献
