The picoplankton in Antarctic lakes of northern Victoria Land during summer 1989–1990

Summary Photoautotrophic picoplankton is reported from some lakes located near the Italian Antarctic station of Terra Nova. Observations, carried out by both flow cytometry on water samples and electron microscopy on micro-organisms in cultures from each lake, have confirmed the occurrence in all the environments studied of this fraction accounting, in several cases, for more than the 50% of the phytoplankton, measured as chlorophyll. Cultures of the picoplankton fraction from these waters contained known prokaryotic (Synechococcus) and eukaryotic (Chlorella) genera as well as two unidentified entities, possibly prochlorophytes.     

Persistence of the control of the fluctuations of heart rate in the anesthetized and pithed adult rat. Effect of enteraminergic drugs]

Spontaneous fluctuations in heart rate were analyzed by spectral analysis in the ether anesthetized and pithed adult rat. In order to investigate the changes in the spectral pattern of the fluctuations, the selective 5HT-2 and -3 isoreceptor blockers ritanserin and BRL 43694A were used. In both the experimental conditions, ritanserin blockade led to dose-dependent increased fluctuations in HR low and high frequencies. In both the anesthetized and pithed rats, the low frequency range HR fluctuations were drastically reduced by BRL 43694A.     

Multivariate analysis of metastasis risk in laryngeal carcinoma. II. Immune response

The presence of inflammatory reaction, plasma cells, and eosinophils in peritumoral connective tissue and in neoplastic stroma was evaluated with morphometrical method in 181 patients affected by laryngeal carcinoma. A logistic multiple regression model was applied making it with the use of an independent variable represented by the "infiltrating" or "expansive" types of tumor growth, in order to evaluate the probability of nodal metastatsis of each parameter. The results suggest an inverse correlationship between plasma cells and inflammatory infiltration and incidence of nodal metastatsis only in the comparison of the extreme conditions: those with scarce infiltration versus the ones with large infiltration. Inflammatory or plasmacellular infiltration may represent both a defense mechanism against cancer and an aspecific or allergic reaction. The eosinophilic infiltration shows no value in the prevention of nodal involvement.     

Detection of complex alleles by direct analysis of DNA heteroduplexes

DNA molecules derived from three alleles of the HLA-DRB3 locus and differing from each other at several nucleotide sites were denatured and cross-hybridized. Each allelic combination was found to generate a pair of heteroduplexes of different mobility. Their retardation as compared to homoduplexes was proportional to the number of mismatches. In each heteroduplexes pair the component possessing the highest number of Pyr-Pyr oppositions was the most retarded. The results are those predicted by a theoretical model implying a correlation between base-pair opening and bending of the DNA double helix. These observations introduce a new HLA typing method at the genomic level and indicate an experimental approach to the analysis of the superhelical DNA conformation as related to different types of base oppositions.     

Saccharification and protein enrichment of sugar beet pulp byPleurotus florida

Summary Pleurotus florida was grown in submerged culture with different concentrations of sugar beet pulp with a view to its nutritional upgrading. Micelial growth, protein enrichment and dry weight loss of the solid residues of cultures, as well as the evolution of reducing sugars in the liquid medium, were followed for 14 days. A product with 45% (w/w) protein and a saccharification extent as high as 35% (w/w) were obtained after 7 days with 1% (w/v) sugar beet pulp.     

Recombinant interleukin-2 and lymphokine-activated killer cells in renal cancer patients: II. characterization of cells cultured ex vivo and their contribution to the in vivo immunomodulation

Summary Burkitt lymphoma (BL) lines can be grouped according to phenotypic characteristics. Group I cells exhibit the phenotype of resting B cells and grow as single cells. Such lines can be Epstein-Barr-virus(EBV)-negative or -positive. Group II and group III cells are always EBV-positive, they express B cell activation markers, grow in aggregates and resemble in varying degrees lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL). We studied three groups of BL lines for their capacity to interact with allogeneic lymphocytes. The results showed that as long as the lines have the group I phenotype, they do not stimulate allogeneic T lymphocytes irrespective whether they carry the EBV genome. The group II and III cells are stimulatory. Generally there was no correlation between sensitivity to lymphocyte-mediated lysis and the phenotype of the lines. In one set of lines, the group I cells had higher sensitivity to both natural killer and lymphokine-activated killer effectors compared to the group II or III lines. However, such correlation could not be seen with the other two sets of lines. Among the phenotypic features investigated, expression of the adhesion molecules LFA-1 and LFA-3 correlated with the tendency for cell aggregation.
