Age-Related Changes in Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Activity of Rat Brain, Liver, and Heart

Abstract: Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity was measured in brains, livers, and hearts of 23–26-month-old and 3-month-old rats. A significant increase of ALDH activity was found in whole brain of old rats with both acetaldehyde (39%) and propionylaldehyde (15%) used as substrates. In different brain areas of old rats, with acetaldehyde used as substrate, a significant increase of ALDH activity was found in striatum (30–50%) and cerebral cortex (37%). However, no significant difference in ALDH activity was found in livers and hearts of young and old rats. Preliminary experiments showed a significant increase of aldehyde reductase activity (52%) with p -nitrobenzaldehyde used as substrate in whole brain of old rats compared with young rats. The present work indicates that an increase of ALDH activity in brain of old rats may be an adaptive phenomenon.     

Teleonomical optimization of a fractal model of the pulmonary arterial bed

Modeling the pulmonary arterial tree (PAT) is considered here as an optimal synthesis problem. Firstly, a class of candidate models is specified: the three-dimensional symmetric dichotomous fractal trees of elastic tubes described by Womersley's equations. Secondly, the parameters are shown to be constrained by interactions of PAT with the rest of the body; these constraints are used to limit the volume of the parametric space to which attention will be directed in the synthesis step. Thirdly, a teleonomical hypothesis is proposed: a naturally selected PAT must have a minimal input impedance under conditions keeping total arterial volume and distensibility as small as possible. This hypothesis is translated in mathematical terms and the resulting cost-function minimized in the limited parametric volume. The optimal model has parameter values and an impedance spectrum corresponding satisfactorily with real data. Moreover this model gives a clear picture of the internal hemodynamic behavior of PAT as an impedance matching device.     

Ergebnisse von Bestimmungen menschlicher Serum-Transferrin-Typen

Zusammenfassung Es wird über die Ergebnisse der in Ungarn erstmals durchgeführten Serum-Transferrin-Typen-Bestimmungen an 1007 Personen berichtet. Die Untersuchungen wurden mit der horizontalen Stärkegelelektrophorese durchgeführt. In 5 Fällen wurden Varianten gefunden, die sich als Typ B_0-1C bzw. B₀C erwiesen. Weiterhin wird über die Ergebnisse von Tf-Untersuchungen in Fällen strittiger Vaterschaft berichtet. In einer 2-Männer-Sache gelang es, eine Zuordnung höchstwahrscheinlich zu machen.

Distribution of serum transferrin groups in Hungrary and their application in paternity proceedings

Summary Results of human serum transferrin-type determinations carried out on 1007 persons the first time in Hungary are reported. The determinations were carried out by way of the horizontal starchgel electrophorese according to Smithies modified by Ashton. In 5 cases variants were found migrating faster than the common type Tf C proving at the identification as type B_0-1 respectively B₀. That is, the frequency of the Tf-variants in Hungary are estimated about 0.5%. The significance of Tf-type determinations in clearing up disputed paternity is discussed. Also the results of determinations of this kind in a juridicial case are reported. It was about a 2-men case. Paternity of the witness was disclosed by way of Tf-type determination, that of the defendant, however, proved.

Résumé Le climat chaud et humide de la Ligurie méditerranéenne détermine la réapparition de quelques groupements végétaux connus de la Catalogne et rares ou nuls en Languedoc: Inulo-Oryzopsietum miliaceae, Cichorio-Sporoboletum poiretii, Hyparrhenietum hirto-pubescentis, Rubo-Coriarietum.Le caractère particulier de la végétation ligure a été exprimé par des groupements spéciaux: Pistacio-Rhamnetum alaterni, qui remplace le Quercetum cocciferae, groupements à Ostrya carpinifolia et à Brachypodium pinnatum des endroits frais, groupements buissonnants à Erica arborea et Genista germanica, à Rosmarinus et Genista cinerea, Asplenio-Campanuletum macrorhizae des rochers, etc.

Summary The warm and humid climate of the Mediterranean Liguria determines the reappearance of some communities, known in Catalonia, and seldom or not existing in Languedoc: Inulo-Oryzopsietum miliaceae, Cichorio-Sporoboletum poiretii, Hyparrhenietum hirto-pubescentis, Rubo-Coriarietum.The particular character of the Liguric vegetation is expressed in special communities: Pistacio-Rhamnetum alaterni, which replaces the Quercetum cocciferae, communities with Ostrya carpinifolia and with Brachypodium pinnatum in the fresh places, bushy communities with Erica arborea and Genista germanica, with Rosmarinus and Genista cinerea, Asplenio-Campanuletum macrorhizae of the rocks, and so on.
