Wild rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus (L) introduced to Australia over a century ago successfully colonized diverse environments in a large part of the continent varying from arid desert, alps, to lush grasslands and coastline where water and salt may be either abundant or very scarce. Wild rabbits caught in Northern Victoria were studied under laboratory conditions, where they adapted to dry pelleted food and drank regularly water and a cafeteria of electrolyte solutions offered. Intracerebroventricular (IVT) infusion of angiotensin II (AII) in doses 10, 50 and 500 ng/h did not increase their water drinking, but increased salt appetite, although it was delayed one or more days after the beginning of AII infusion. IVT infusion of AII 500 ng/h for one day caused a halving in water intake and a tenfold increase in sodium excretion. These were followed by compensatory changes in water and 0.5 M NaCl intake on the consecutive days. IVT infusion of AII 50 ng/h for one day induced an increased urinary sodium excretion, a negative sodium balance which was not followed by an increased salt appetite. IVT infusion of AII 10 ng/h for five days caused a progressive increase in sodium excretion and salt appetite which were significant on the fourth day of infusion and both remained eight-ten times greater than control levels for three days after the cessation of infusion. Water intake was unchanged. IVT infusion of 0.3 M Na-CSF for two days reduced water and food intake, and caused a negative sodium balance on the second day of infusion which was not followed by increase in salt appetite.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Among a consecutive series of 9,279 sternotomies performed during a period of 2(1/2) years, 61 (0.66%) patients developed significant wound complications. Of these, 58 (95.1%) survived. Sternal infection occurred in 36 patients (0.39%). Predisposing factors included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, closed chest massage, prolonged assisted ventilation, and excessive bleeding after operation. Positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) did not, in itself, predispose to sternal dehiscence. Intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) treatments caused excessive coughing, which may have increased the likelihood of dehiscence. Disposable drapes and expeditious surgery probably contributed to the low incidence of wound infection. Early diagnosis, surgical debridement, rewiring and primary closure with substernal drainage, without continuous antibiotic irrigation, resulted in satisfactory resolution in most patients.  相似文献

Essential oils of fennel, peppermint, caraway, eucalyptus, geranium and lemon were tested for their antimicrobial activities against some plant pathogenic micro-organisms (Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria alternate, Penicilium italicum Penicilium digitatum and Botyritus cinerea). Essential oils of fennel, peppermint, caraway were selected as an active ingredient for the formulation of biocides due to their efficiency in controlling the tested micro-organisms. Successful emulsifiable concentrates (biocides) were prepared from these oils using different emulsifiers (Emulgator B.L.M. Tween20 and Tween80) and different fixed oils (sesame, olive, cotton and soybean oils). Physico-chemical properties of the formulated biocide (spontaneous emulsification, emulsion stability test, cold stability and heat stability tests as well as viscosity, surface tension and pH) were measured. The prepared biocides were ready to be tested for application in a future work as a safe pesticide against different pathogens.  相似文献

Introduction

Patients with mean pulmonary artery pressures (mPAP) of 21 to 24 mm Hg have a so-called borderline elevation of mPAP (BoPAP)—a condition thought to represent early-stage pulmonary arterial vasculopathy. Based on the DETECT study, this post-hoc analysis examined patient characteristics of systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients with normal mPAP, BoPAP and elevated mPAP, fulfilling pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) criteria.

Methods

Adult patients with a duration of SSc more than 3 years, a diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide less than 60% predicted, and no previous diagnosis of any form of pulmonary hypertension (PH) underwent screening tests followed by right heart catheterization. Subjects were divided into three groups: normal mPAP, BoPAP, and PAH. Exploratory comparative and binary logistic regression analyses were performed for the BoPAP versus normal mPAP and PAH versus BoPAP groups.

Results

Of 244 patients evaluated, 148 (60%) had normal mPAP, 36 (15%) had BoPAP, and 60 (25%) had definite PAH. Univariable logistic regression (ULR) showed the mean tricuspid regurgitation velocity in patients with BoPAP to be intermediate between normal mPAP and PAH. In the ULR analyses BoPAP versus normal mPAP and PAH versus BoPAP, the statistically significant predictors were, amongst others: demographic, clinical, pulmonary function, echocardiographic and hemodynamic variables.

Conclusions

In this exploratory post-hoc analysis of the DETECT study population patients with BoPAP could be distinguished from patients with normal mPAP and PAH, and it appears that BoPAP may be an intermediate stage on the continuum between normal PA pressures and PAH.

The model proposed for external TEA block of Shaker K+ channels predicts a proportional relationship between TEA sensitivity and calculated electrical distance derived from measurements of voltage dependence of TEA block. In the present study, we examined this relationship for the A-type K+ current (IA) of Helix aspersa in neuronal somata using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. External TEA inhibited IA with strong voltage dependence, such that the TEA dissociation constant was increased at depolarized test potentials. The half-inhibition constant (V0.5) for TEA block was approximately 21 mM at 0 mV, and V0.5 increased to approximately 67 mM at 50 mV. The calculated electrical distance for TEA block suggested that TEA traversed 65% of the way into the membrane electrical field. TEA also caused significant shifts in the voltage-dependence of A-type K+ channel gating. For example, at TEA concentrations below that required to fully suppress delayed outward currents, TEA caused depolarizing shifts in the voltage-dependence of A-type channel activation, steady-state inactivation, time for removal of inactivation, and slowed channel activation kinetics. Taken together, these observations suggest that TEA biased the local field potential near voltage-sensing domains of A-type K+ channels, causing the transmembrane electrical field to be relatively hyperpolarized in the presence of TEA. In summary, the calculated electrical distance of TEA block of A-type K+ channels in H. aspersa neurons is unprecedented among other K+ channels. This raises concerns about the conventional interpretation of this value. Furthermore, the voltage-dependent properties of IA are modified by TEA at concentrations previously used to isolate delayed rectifier potassium channels (IKDR) selectively. This lack of specificity has important implications for recent, as well as future studies of IA in H. aspersa and possibly other snail neurons.  相似文献

Eryngium regnellii Malme belongs to the largest genera in the Apiaceae family, with 250 species worldwide and 65 represented in South America. It is a herbaceous species typical of hill plant communities, which, along with remnant grassland patches, are the most relevant natural habitats for the maintenance of diversity in the Southern Pampas. Eryngium regnellii is key to the maintenance of pollination mutualisms, being a generalist (displaying a diverse assemblage of pollinators) and ubiquitous species (present in all studied sierras). However, fragmentation of the Pampean landscape due to agricultural intensification has led to the loss of natural environments. Therefore, the reintroduction of E. regnellii in strategic places would facilitate the occurrence of wild pollinators, while favoring pollination services in the agroecosystem. The germination requirements of E. regnellii were studied because a better knowledge of the reproductive biology of this species would provide information relevant to its reproduction and reintroduction into degraded areas. Germination percentages and mean time to germination were evaluated, using one control and two pre-germination treatments: chemical scarification with sulfuric acid, and mechanical scarification with sand paper. Chemical scarified seeds did not germinate. Mechanically scarified and control seed groups showed no significant differences either in germination percentages (49% and 59% respectively) or in mean germination time (13 and 14 days, respectively). Results indicate that E. regnellii shows no physical dormancy, and does not require specific pre-germination treatments for germination under the studied laboratory conditions. The high germination capacity of E. regnellii, along with its ecological attributes, make it a potential species for restoring plant-pollinator interactions in the fragmented landscapes of the Southern Pampas.  相似文献

1. A new rapid method for the purification of fat-cell acetyl-CoA carboxylase is described; the key step is sedimentation after specific polymerization by citrate. 2. Incubation of epididymal fat-pads or isolated fat-cells with insulin or adrenaline leads to a rapid increase or decrease respectively in the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase measured in fresh tissue extracts. The persistence of the effect of insulin through high dilution of tissue extracts and through purification involving precipitation with (NH4)2SO4 suggests that the enzyme undergoes a covalent modification after exposure of intact tissue to the hormone. The opposed effects of insulin and adrenaline are not adequately explained through modification of a common site on acetyl-CoA carboxylase, since these hormones bring about qualitatively different alterations in the kinetic properties of the enzyme measured in tissue extracts. 3. The state of phosphorylation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase within intact fat-cells exposed to insulin was determined, and results indicate a small but consistent rise in overall phosphorylation of the Mr-230000 subunit after insulin treatment. 4. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase from fat-cells previously incubated in medium containing [32P]phosphate was purified by immunoprecipitation and then digested with performic acid and trypsin before separation of the released phosphopeptides by two-dimensional analysis. Results obtained show that the exposure of fat-cells to insulin leads to a 5-fold increase in incorporation of 32P into a peptide which is different from those most markedly affected after exposure of fat-cells to adrenaline. 5. These studies indicate that the activation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase in cells incubated with insulin is brought about by the increased phosphorylation of a specific site on the enzyme, possibly catalysed by the membrane-associated cyclic AMP-independent protein kinase described by Brownsey, Belsham & Denton [(1981) FEBS Lett. 124, 145-150].  相似文献

This review summarises recent information on beneficial roles that soil nematodes play in the cycling of carbon and other plant nutrients in grassland ecosystems. In particular, we focus on the role of the two dominant functional groups of nematodes, namely the microbial- and root-feeders, and how their activities may enhance soil ecosystem-level processes of nutrient cycling and, ultimately, plant productivity in managed and unmanaged grassland ecosystems. We report recent experiments which show that low amounts of root herbivory by nematodes can increase the allocation of photoassimilate carbon to roots, leading to increased root exudation and microbial activity in the rhizosphere. The effects of these interactions on soil nutrient cycling and plant productivity are discussed. Evidence is presented to show that the feeding activities of microbial-feeding nematodes can enhance nutrient mineralization and plant nutrient uptake in grasslands, but that these responses are highly species-specific and appear to be strongly regulated by higher trophic groups of fauna (top-down regulation). We recommend that future studies of the roles of nematodes in grasslands ecosystems should consider these more complex trophic interactions and also the effects of species diversity of nematodes on soil ecosystem-level processes.
