Role of isovaleroyl lipids in channeling of sound in the porpoise melon

Physical properties (e.g. specific gravity, adiabatic compressibility and sound velocity) of lipids isolated from tissues from contiguous areas of the fatty melon of an echo-locating porpoise (Delphinus delphis) were determined to elucidate relations between lipid composition and structure, and sound transmission in the head. Lipid content varied greatly within the melon (13.6–77.6% of the tissue weight) and triacylglycerols (80–100%) were the major lipid components. This lipid class was composed of diisovaleroylglycerides (triacylglycerols containing two isovaleroyl moieties and a long-chain acyl moiety), monoisovaleroyldiacylglycerols and triacylglycerols consisting of long-chain acids. The lipid-rich (>45%) areas in the melon contained a high proportion (>45% of total triacylglycerols) of diisovaleroylglycerides. There were gradations of sound velocities within the melon; the lowest sound velocities were associated with high concentrations of diisovaleroylglycerides (<1400 m/s) and the highest with high concentrations of long-chain triacylglycerols. Assuming an average sound frequency of 75 kHz, and considering dimensions of melon (path length and width of 12–14 cm and 5 cm, respectively), a forward radiating lobe of 15–25 degrees is produced. Thus, the deposition of lipids of different acoustic properties in a three-dimensional matrix within the porpoise melon results in a lens for the projection of sound into the marine environment.     

A Rare, Larval-founded Colony of the Bryozoan Archimedes from the Carboniferous of Alabama

Very few basal attachments of the spiralled fenestrate bryozoan Archimedes are known. A newly discovered specimen is interpreted to have grown on a thin cylindrical ephemeral substratum that extended above the sediment-water interface, allowing paired spirals to develop and to extend in opposite directions when the colony was very small.     

Private Financing Options for Long-term Care

Private financing for long-term care now comes almost exclusively from out-of-pocket payments. Long-term-care costs quickly impoverish most elderly, resulting in Medicaid dependency. The consequences are profound for the western Sun Belt with its rapidly growing elderly population. Key private financing options are long-term-care individual retirement accounts (LTC/IRAs), home equity conversion, social-health maintenance organizations and long-term-care insurance. Study of data from the past half century suggests that the LTC/IRA approach would prove unsatisfactory for the purpose despite the intuitive appeal of this mechanism. Experience with home equity conversions is still very limited, and unresolved questions limit this approach to the role of a reserve option for now. While promising, social-health maintenance organizations are still in the experimental stages and not yet commercially available. Long-term-care insurance is currently sold on a thin market and emphasizes nursing home coverage. New approaches to private financing through long-term-care insurance seem to offer the best approach for immediate implementation.     

Recessive Lethal Mutations and the Maintenance of Duplication-Bearing Strains of Dictyostelium discoideum

Recessive lethal mutations have been isolated and used to maintain n + 1 aneuploid strains of Dictyostelium discoideum carrying a duplication of part or all of linkage group VII. The recessive lethal mutations, relA351 and relB352, arose spontaneously in diploids; no mutagenic treatment was used in the isolation of these mutations. The probable gene order on linkage group VII is: centromere, relB couA, bsgB, cobA, relA. Maintenance of aneuploids disomic for linkage group VII was made possible by complementation of a rel mutation on each linkage group VII homologue by the corresponding wild-type allele on the other linkage group VII homologue. The duplication-bearing disomic strains were slow-growing and produced faster-growing sectors on the colony edge. Haploid sectors probably arise by a combination of mitotic recombination and subsequent loss of one homologue, diploid sectors may be formed by chromosome doubling to 2n + 2, followed by chromosome loss to return to 2n, and aneuploid sectors may arise by deletion or new mutation.     

Effect of differential gastric evacuation and multispecies prey items on estimates of daily energy intake in juvenile chinook salmon

Synopsis The caloric density of stomach contents in juvenile chinook salmon,Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, was not affected by gastric evacuation, suggesting a constant caloric density of stomach contents during evacuation. Differences in the caloric density of prey consumed did affect caloric density of stomach contents over a 24-h period. Consumption of the amphipodCorophium sp. was associated with reduced caloric densities of stomach contents. During periods whenCorophium contributed more than 4% of the stomach contents, average caloric density declined from 5.56 to 5.33 kcal g^–1. Despite this difference, estimates of daily energy intake of juvenile chinook salmon were only 3%, greater when developed from the mean caloric density of stomach contents excludingCorophium.     

Current utilization and further development of the palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer L., Arecaceae) in Tamil Nadu state,India

The palmyra palm Borassus flabellifer,), a multipurpose tree of great utility, occurs extensively in Tamil Nadu state, India. Figuring in history, literature, and folklore of the state, it is exploited for food from the fruit and tuberous seedlings; beverage and sugar from the sap; fiber from the leaf and leafbase for brushes, cordage, weaving, and plaiting; trunk wood for construction and fuel; and numerous minor products. Increasing exploitation of the palmyra threatens the future supply of palm raw materials so important to rural populations. Integrated development of palmyra products for local and export markets, as well as management/conservation measures, are needed both to maximize the economic value of the products and to assure sustained yield from native stands.     

Linkage analysis of the myosin heavy chain gene in Dictyostelium discoideum using a mutation generated by homologous recombination

Summary A mutation (mhcA1 in strain HMM) created by insertional gene inactivation was used to map the Dictyostelium discoideum myosin heavy chain gene (mhcA) to linkage group IV. Three phenotypic traits associated with this mutation (slow colony growth, inability of the mutant to develop past aggregation, and the presence of five to ten integrated vector copies) cosegregated as expected for the consequences of a single insertional event. This linkage was confirmed using a restriction fragment length polymorphism. The mhcA1 mutation was recessive to wild type and was nonallelic with mutations at the following loci on linkage group IV: aggJ, aggL, couH, minA, phgB and tsgB. This work demonstrates the ability to apply standard techniques developed for D. discoideum parasexual genetic analyses to mutants generated by transformation, which is of particular relevance to analysis of genes for which no classical mutations or restriction fragment length polymorphisms are available.     

Purification of two glycoproteins expressing beta 1-6 branched Asn-linked oligosaccharides from metastatic tumour cells.

Increased branching at the trimannosyl core of 'complex-type' Asn-linked oligosaccharides has been observed in both human and murine tumour cells, and appears to be associated with enhanced metastatic potential in several murine tumour models [Dennis, Laferte, Waghorne, Breitman & Kerbel (1987), Science 236, 582-585]. The lectin leucoagglutinin (L-PHA) requires the-GlcNAc beta 1-6Man alpha 1-6Man-linked lactosamine antenna in complex-type oligosaccharides for high-affinity binding and can be used to detect these structures in glycoproteins separated on SDS/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. The major L-PHA-binding glycoproteins in the highly metastatic lymphoid tumour cell line called MDAY-D2 were purified and resolved into two major species, termed P2A (110 kDa) and P2B (130 kDa). P2A had L-PHA-reactive Asn-linked oligosaccharides with polylactosamine sequences as well as a large component of sialylated O-linked carbohydrates. The glycoprotein showed structural characteristics similar to those of leukosialin (i.e. CD43), a glycoprotein previously identified on the surface of leukocytes. Based on monosaccharide compositional analysis and glycosidase digestions, P2B was found to be 50-60% Asn-linked oligosaccharide containing polylactosamine sequences and sialic acid. The N-terminal peptide sequence of P2B was determined to be very similar to that of murine lysosomal membrane glycoprotein (LAMP-1), a ubiquitous glycoprotein found largely in the lysosomal membranes but also in the plasma membrane of several murine and human tumour cell lines.
