Three species of lichens, Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca (Sm.) Zopf, Rhizoplaca melanopthalma (DC.) Leuckert & Poelt and Rhizoplaca peltata Ramonds Leuckert, were collected from middle Anatolia, Erciyes Mountain (Kayseri) in Turkey. Their usnic acid amounts were determined by HPLC in acetone extracts. In addition, antimicrobial activities of these extracts were determined against Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218), Enterococcus faecalis (RSKK 508), Proteus mirabilis (Pasteur Ens. 235), Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was shown that, as the usnic acid amount increased, the antimicrobial activities increased too. The usnic acid contents of Rhizoplaca species varied between 0.19-4.0% dry weight.  相似文献

Ca2+-dependent phospholipid binding to the C2A and C2B domains of synaptotagmin 1 is thought to trigger fast neurotransmitter release, but only Ca2+ binding to the C2B domain is essential for release. To investigate the underlying mechanism, we have compared the role of basic residues in Ca2+/phospholipid binding and in release. Mutations in a polybasic sequence on the side of the C2B domain beta-sandwich or in a basic residue in a top Ca2+-binding loop of the C2A domain (R233) cause comparable decreases in the apparent Ca2+ affinity of synaptotagmin 1 and the Ca2+ sensitivity of release, whereas mutation of the residue homologous to Arg233 in the C2B domain (Lys366) has no effect. Phosphatidylinositol polyphosphates co-activate Ca2+-dependent and -independent phospholipid binding to synaptotagmin 1, but the effects of these mutations on release only correlate with their effects on the Ca2+-dependent component. These results reveal clear distinctions in the Ca2+-dependent phospholipid binding modes of the synaptotagmin 1 C2 domains that may underlie their functional asymmetry and suggest that phosphatidylinositol polyphosphates may serve as physiological modulators of Ca2+ affinity of synaptotagmin 1 in vivo.  相似文献

A broad survey of available world literature showed that at least 98 wildLactuca spp. (Asteraceae) have been described taxonomically. The distribution of the genusLactuca worldwide includes 17 species in Europe, 51 in Asia, 43 in Africa, and 12 in the Americas (mostly the North American subcontinent). Species originating in Asia, Africa, and the Americas form ca. 83% of knownLactuca spp. richness; however, they are very poorly documented from the viewpoint of taxonomic relationships, ecogeography, and variability. The phytogeography ofLactuca spp. regarding their distribution on different continents and in relation to the structure of the lettuce gene pool is discussed. A more detailed analysis of geographical distribution and habitats is given for some species (L. serriola, L. saligna, L. virosa, L. perennis, L. quercina, L. tatarica), which represent the primary, secondary, and tertiary gene pools of cultivated lettuce (L. sativa). Original and synanthropic distributions ofLactuca spp. and their occurrence in natural and secondary habitats are discussed, along with the representation of wildLactuca spp. in world gene-bank collections. Global biodiversity ofLactuca spp. and their representation in germplasm collections are poorly documented. Future studies of taxonomy, phytogeography, ecology, phylogenetic relationships, and genetic diversity are needed for a more complete understanding of this genus and taxonomically related genera.  相似文献

The overexpression of the antiapoptotic gene Bcl-2 has been previously shown to protect cells from undergoing apoptosis during exposure to environmental stress. There is strong evidence that, in addition to its well-known effects on apoptosis, Bcl-2 is involved in antioxidant protection and regulation of cell cycle progression. To determine if the overexpression of Bcl-2 could improve the process of adaptation to suspension and protein-free growth environments, we have studied the growth and viability of anchorage-dependent Chinese hamster ovary cell lines that differ only in there expression of Bcl-2. In addition, we examined the effect of combining Bcl-2 and p21CIP1 expression during adaptation to suspension and protein-free environments. The results of this study provide evidence of a clear reduction in the overall time required for the process of adaptation to both suspension and protein-free environments in Bcl-2 expressing cultures and that through the combined expression of p21CIP1 and Bcl-2, it is possible to further reduce the time. The Bcl-2 results support the well-demonstrated concept that this protein plays an important role in apoptotic signaling pathways and suggest that it may also provide more diverse functions beside its death-inhibiting role.  相似文献

Of 38 children investigated between 1966 and 1971 who had a blood lead concentration greater than 37 μg/100 ml eight had encephalopathy and one died; all these eight had a blood lead concentration of 99 μg/100 ml or above. Blood lead levels are related to haemoglobin concentrations and anaemia is common in children with blood lead concentrations of 37-60 μg/100 ml, levels previously accepted as harmless.Children with blood lead concentrations greater than 60 μg/100 ml show radiological evidence of lead intoxication, and treatment for this should be considered when blood lead concentration exceeds 37 μg/100 ml. Children presenting with unexplained encephalopathy should be radiographed for evidence of lead intoxication.  相似文献

We studied incubation in domesticated Ostriches Struthio camelus in South Africa and wild Ostriches in Kenya. Although the eggs were large, with relatively high thermal capacities, unattended eggs exposed to the sun reached dangerously high temperatures (40,5°C). Experimental exposure of fresh eggs to the sun for seven days prior to incubation greatly reduced the percentage of embryos which developed, and no embryos survived 15 days of exposure. In the wild. Ostriches frequently shade their eggs in the pre-incubation period to prevent overheating.

During natural incubation, temperatures in the eggs (range 30,8-33,8°C) and of nest-air (31,9-34,6°C) were remarkably constant, despite the daily ambient fluctuations of air temperatures (17,8-38,9°C). Similarly the humidity of the nest-air (39–52%) was lower and less variable than the ambient air (39–72%). Water loss during 42 days of incubation was 11–12% of initial egg weight and, in addition, early laid eggs lost 3–4% during the 2½-3 week pre-incubation period. The water vapour conductivity and the daily water loss of Ostrich eggs were similar to those of other birds, in proportion to epg size, despite the arid environment inhabited by Ostriches. Some of the constraints on the feeding and breeding behaviour of Ostriches imposed by the physical requirements of their eggs are discussed.  相似文献

Cover crops play an increasingly important role in improving soil quality, reducing agricultural inputs and improving environmental sustainability. The main objectives of this critical global review and systematic analysis were to assess cover crop practices in the context of their impacts on nitrogen leaching, net greenhouse gas balances (NGHGB) and crop productivity. Only studies that investigated the impacts of cover crops and measured one or a combination of nitrogen leaching, soil organic carbon (SOC), nitrous oxide (N2O), grain yield and nitrogen in grain of primary crop, and had a control treatment were included in the analysis. Long‐term studies were uncommon, with most data coming from studies lasting 2–3 years. The literature search resulted in 106 studies carried out at 372 sites and covering different countries, climatic zones and management. Our analysis demonstrates that cover crops significantly (p < 0.001) decreased N leaching and significantly (p < 0.001) increased SOC sequestration without having significant (p > 0.05) effects on direct N2O emissions. Cover crops could mitigate the NGHGB by 2.06 ± 2.10 Mg CO2‐eq ha?1 year?1. One of the potential disadvantages of cover crops identified was the reduction in grain yield of the primary crop by ≈4%, compared to the control treatment. This drawback could be avoided by selecting mixed cover crops with a range of legumes and non‐legumes, which increased the yield by ≈13%. These advantages of cover crops justify their widespread adoption. However, management practices in relation to cover crops will need to be adapted to specific soil, management and regional climatic conditions.  相似文献

Spatially explicit farm‐gate production costs and the economic potential of three types of energy crops grown on available marginal land in China for 2017 and 2040 were investigated using a spatial accounting method and construction of cost–supply curves. The average farm‐gate cost from all available marginal land was calculated as 32.9 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus Mode, 27.5 CNY/GJ for Switchgrass Mode, 32.4 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode, and 909 CNY/GJ for Jatropha Mode in 2017. The costs of Miscanthus and switchgrass were predicted to decrease by approximately 11%‐15%, whereas the cost of Jatropha was expected to increase by 5% in 2040. The cost of Jatropha varies significantly from 193 to 9,477 CNY/GJ across regions because of the huge differences in yield across regions. The economic potential of the marginal land was calculated as 28.7 EJ/year at a cost of less than 25 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus Mode, 4.0 EJ/year at a cost of less than 30 CNY/GJ for Switchgrass Mode, 29.6 EJ/year at a cost of less than 25 CNY/GJ for Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode, and 0.1 EJ/year at a cost of less than 500 CNY/GJ for Jatropha Mode in 2017. It is not feasible to develop Jatropha production on marginal land based on existing technologies, given its high production costs. Therefore, the Miscanthus & Switchgrass Mode is the most economical way, because it achieves the highest economic potential compared with other modes. The sensitivity analysis showed that the farm‐gate costs of Miscanthus and switchgrass are most sensitive to uncertainties associated with yield reduction and harvesting costs, while, for Jatropha, the unpredictable yield has the greatest impact on its farm‐gate cost. This study can help policymakers and industrial stakeholders make strategic and tactical bioenergy development plans in China (exchange rate in 2017: 1€ = 7.63¥; all the joules in this paper are higher heat value).  相似文献
