The physical structure of coral reefs plays a critical role as a barrier to storm waves and tsunamis and as a habitat for living reef-building and reef-associated organisms. However, the mechanical properties of reef substrate (i.e. the non-living benthos) are largely unknown, despite the fact that substrate properties may ultimately determine where organisms can persist. We used a geo-mechanical technique to measure substrate material density and strength over a reef hydrodynamic gradient. Contrary to expectation, we found a weak relationship between substrate strength and wave-induced water flow: flow rates decline sharply at the reef crest, whereas substrate properties are relatively constant over much of the reef before declining by almost an order of magnitude at the reef back. These gradients generate a novel hump-shaped pattern in resistance to mechanical disturbances for live corals, where colonies closer to the back reef are prone to dislodgement because of poorly cemented substrate. Our results help explain an intermediate zone of higher taxonomic and morphological diversity bounded by lower diversity exposed reef crest and unstable reef back zones. 相似文献

Human disturbances are increasingly becoming a conservation concern for many populations of colonial seabirds. Colonially reproducing species are particularly vulnerable to localised disturbances because detrimental elements can simultaneously affect the entire population. Studies of petrels and shearwaters have shown that light pollution, in particular, can be harmful for both fledglings and adults, but little is known of the way such anthropogenic elements affect the quality of parental care at the nest. Chick provisioning in petrels and shearwaters occurs exclusively at night and is also negatively correlated with the amount of moonlight. We tested the hypothesis that high-intensity light and sound disturbances will disrupt nest attendance and thus affect weight gain in chicks but that the magnitude of such effects would be modulated by moonlight conditions. We measured the effect of two outdoor disco events on overnight weight gain in 26 chicks of Scopoli’s shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) from a breeding colony on Linosa Island. The two disco events occurred under contrasting moonlight conditions (moonless vs moonlight). Chicks situated closer to the disturbance gained significantly less weight compared to conspecifics from nests further away but the effect was only evident on the moonless night.Our results suggest that light and sound disturbances can have a negative effect on parental care in C. diomedea but moonlight might moderate the bird’s perception and thus the magnitude of the disturbance. However, while occasional disturbances may impact short-term weight gain in C. diomedea chicks, such effects are not perceivable at fledging when measured as differences in the weight or the date at which they left the nest. 相似文献

The differentially methylated 5'-flank of the mouse H19 gene unidirectionally regulates the communication between enhancer elements and gene promoters and presumably represses maternal Igf2 expression in vivo [1-6]. The specific activation of the paternally inherited Igf2 allele has been proposed to involve methylation-mediated inactivation of the H19 insulator function during male germline development [1-4, 6]. Here, we addressed the role of methylation by inserting a methylated fragment of the H19-imprinting control region (ICR) into a nonmethylated episomal H19 minigene construct, followed by the transfection of ligation mixture into Hep3B cells. Individual clones were expanded and analyzed for genotype, methylation status, chromatin conformation, and insulator function. The results show that the methylated status of the H19 ICR could be propagated for several passages without spreading into the episomal vector. Moreover, the nuclease hypersensitive sites, which are typical for the maternally inherited H19 ICR allele [1], were absent on the methylated ICR, underscoring the suggestion that the methylation mark dictates parent of origin-specific chromatin conformations [1] that involve CTCF [2]. Finally, the insulator function was strongly attenuated in stably maintained episomes. What’s Your Cap: Know When to Put a Lid on Drinking (WYC) is a student-led and research-based binge-drinking prevention campaign at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. It was formed to encourage a culture of alcohol moderation on the university campus through peer-to-peer engagement that emphasizes promotional items and activities of interest to students. Since its development in 2011, WYC has been guided by a logic model that promotes: 1) perceived and actual student drinking norms on campus; 2) benefits of a student-led initiative; and 3) merits of working with community partners. With the release of a clinical guide in Canada for alcohol screening, brief intervention, and referral (SBIR) in 2013, WYC was prompted to consider whether it is a form of population-based SBIR. SBIR is commonly undertaken in the substance use field by health care practitioners, and this paper shares the potential for a student-based SBIR modification on a university campus. 相似文献

Release rates of recently fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ from non-exchangeable interlayer sites in 2:1 silicate minerals were determined for decomposed granite (DG) saprolites from three locations in California, USA. Recently-fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ release from the DG substrate was quantified by extracting diffused $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ with H-resin, as well as a native, annual grass Vulpia microstachys. The $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ release data varied with via the method of extraction, which included H-resin pre-treatments (Na+ or H+) and V. microstachys uptake (mycorrhizal inoculated or uninoculated). After 6 weeks (1008 h), more $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ was recovered from fixed interlayer positions by the H-resins as compared to uptake by V. microstachys. The H+ treated H-resins recovered more released $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ (≈94 mg ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} - {\text{N}}\;{\text{kg}}^{1} $ or (12%) of total fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ ) in two of the three DG samples as compared to the Na+ treated resins, (which recovered ≈70–78 mg ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} - {\text{N}}\;{\text{kg}}^{{{\text{ - 1}}}} $ (or 9–10%) of the total fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ ). The V. microstachys assimilated 8–9% of the total fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ with mycorrhizal inoculum as compared to only 2% without a mycorrhizal inoculum, over the same time period. The fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ release kinetics from the H-resin experiments were most accurately described by first order and power function models, and can be characterized as biphasic using a heterogeneous diffusion model. Uptake of both the 15N and ambient, unlabelled N from the soils was closely related to plant biomass. There was no significant difference in percent of N per unit of biomass between the control and mycorrhizal treatments. The findings presented here indicate that observed, long-term $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ release rates from DG in studies utilizing resins, may overestimate the levels of fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ made available to plants and microorganisms. Additionally, the study suggested that mycorrhizae facilitate the acquisition and plant uptake of fixed $ {\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}} $ , resulting in markedly increased plant biomass production. 相似文献

We describe Peptoonist, a program that can automatically identify the glycans (sugars) present at each N-glycosylation site of a protein. The input to Peptoonist is a series of mass spectra, both MS and MS/MS, obtained from a liquid chromatography (LC) run of proteolytically digested purified glycoproteins. The program uses MS/MS to identify glycosylated peptides and single-MS to identify the N-glycans present on each of these peptides, at least to the level of monosaccharide composition. We validate the program on an LC run of mouse zona pellucida proteins that had been intensively hand annotated by a human expert. Our program doubled the number of glycopeptide identifications, and also found several possible errors in the hand annotation. In addition, it automatically made most of the same glycan isomer identifications as the expert annotator. 相似文献

The Bank Cormorant Phalacrocorax neglectus is endemic to the Benguela upwelling ecosystem off southwest Africa and is classified as Endangered owing to a recent large reduction in its number. It is thought that food scarcity, including a decreased abundance of West Coast rock lobster Jasus lalandii, has been a major driver of the decrease, yet its diet in South Africa is poorly known. We collected 941 pellets regurgitated by Bank Cormorants, at 18 South African breeding colonies during 1975–1985, and 1 523 pellets at 17 colonies during 1995–2002. The species composition of the diet (% numbers) was significantly different between the two periods, with widespread decreases in proportions of rock lobster in the west and of octopus and cuttlefish Sepia spp. at most localities. These taxa were replaced in the diet by fish, including Gobiidae and Clinidae. The pelagic goby Sufflogobius bibarbatus, an important prey of Bank Cormorants in Namibia, was absent from pellets collected in 1975–1985 but common at northern localities from 1995–2002. Composition of the diet by frequency of occurrence was only determined for 1995–2002, when rock lobster was present in 67% of all samples collected, cuttlefish in 39%, and Clinidae in 32%. Data for 1975–1985 and 1995–2002 showed that carapace lengths of rock lobsters eaten by Bank Cormorants averaged 56 mm (range 22–82 mm) and 50 mm (range 22–75 mm), respectively, which compares to the minimum legal size of 75 mm for fisheries in South Africa.
