Investigating whether mating patterns are biased in relation to kinship in isolated populations can provide a better understanding of the occurrence of inbreeding avoidance mechanisms in wild populations. Here, we report on the genetic relatedness (r) among breeding pairs in a relict population of Thorn‐tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) in north‐central Chile that has experienced a long‐term history of isolation. We used simulations based on 8 years of data to assess whether mating is random with respect to relatedness. We found that mean and median population values of pair relatedness tended to be lower than randomly generated values, suggesting that mating is not random with respect to kinship. We hypothesize that female‐biased dispersal is the main mechanism reducing the likelihood of mating among kin, and that the proportion of related pairs (i.e., r > 0.125) in the study population (25%) would presumably be higher in the absence of sex‐biased dispersal. The occurrence of other mechanisms such as extra‐pair copulations, delayed breeding, and active inbreeding avoidance through kin discrimination cannot be dismissed and require further study. 相似文献

Ribosomal RNA secondary structure: compensatory mutations and implications for phylogenetic analysis 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Using sequence data from the 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes of selected
vertebrates, we investigated the effects that constraints imposed by
secondary structure have on the phylogenetic analysis of rRNA sequence
data. Our analysis indicates that characters from both base-pairing regions
(stems) and non-base-pairing regions (loops) contain phylogenetic
information, as judged by the level of support of the phylogenetic results
compared with a well-established tree based on both morphological and
molecular data. The best results (the greatest level of support of
well-accepted nodes) were obtained when the complete data set was used.
However, some previously supported nodes were resolved using either the
stem or loop bases alone. Stem bases sustain a greater number of
compensatory mutations than would be expected at random, but the number is
< 40% of that expected under a hypothesis of perfect compensation to
maintain secondary structure. Therefore, we suggest that in phylogenetic
analyses, the weighting of stem characters be reduced by no more than 20%,
relative to that of loop characters. In contrast to previous suggestions,
we do not recommend weighting of stem positions by one-half, compared with
that of loop positions, because this overcompensates for the constraints
that selection imposes on the secondary structure of rRNA.

Bucks show seasonal variation in their body weight and sexual activity. Three groups of six Alpine and Saanen bucks were used over two consecutive years to investigate if rapid alternations between long and short days could abolish this seasonal variation. The control group was kept under natural annual daylength, while the experimental groups were exposed to alternations of either 1 month of 16L:8D and 1 month of 8L:16D (2-month treatment) or to 2 months of 16L:8D and 2 months of 8L:16D (4-month treatment). In the control group, body weight, sexual behavior, testicular weight and sperm production showed important seasonal variations: body weight decreased between September and January by about 7 kg; refusal to ejaculate went up to 25% in August; testicular weight varied from 103 +/- 2 g (March) to 149 +/- 7 g (October). In contrast, seasonal variations of these parameters decreased in the two experimental groups. In the 2-month treatment group, testicular weight increased from 134 +/- 7 (March) to 148 +/- 8 g (October); while in the 4-month treatment group it increased from 123 +/- 10 to 138 +/- 12 g, respectively; in the same period, the two experimental groups of bucks produced a larger total number of spermatozoa per ejaculate (6.3 +/- 0.3 x 10(9); 2-month treatment and 7.2 +/- 0.3; 4-month treatment) than in the control group (4.2 +/- 0.4). We conclude that rapid alternations between long and short days decreased seasonality in the sexual activity of bucks. 相似文献

Through tabular and average linkage cluster analyses, 872 phytosociological relevés, including 491 obtained from the literature
and 381 of our own relevés obtained in the field, were ordered and classified. Based on these relevés, we then described and
typified the associations, alliances, orders, subclasses, and classes defining the chionophilous communities of the boreal,
temperate and Mediterranean climates of western North America. Diagnostic tables, ordination, clustering, and climatic, edaphic,
and biogeographical data were used to establish floristic affinities among these syntaxa and interpret their distributions.
Syntaxa were characterized by their floristic composition, physiognomy and biogeographical distribution, along with their
position on the snow gradient. Finally, we ascribed the communities growing in temperate and Mediterranean climates to the

A new approach is presented for the study of the variability of Portuguese reproduction cork using solid-state (13)C-NMR spectroscopy and photoacoustic (PAS) FTIR (FTIR-PAS) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics. Cork samples were collected from 12 different geographical sites, and their (13)C-cross-polarization with magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) and FTIR spectra were registered. A large spectral variability among the cork samples was detected by principal component analysis and found to relate to the suberin and carbohydrate contents. This variability was independent of the sample geographical origin but significantly dependent on the cork quality, thus enabling the distinction of cork samples according to the latter property. The suberin content of the cork samples was predicted using multivariate regression models based on the (13)C-NMR and FTIR spectra of the samples as reported previously. Finally, the relationship between the variability of the (13)C-CP/MAS spectra with that of the FTIR-PAS spectra was studied by outer product analysis. This type of multivariate analysis enabled a clear correlation to be established between the peaks assigned to suberin and carbohydrate in the FTIR spectrum and those appearing in the (13)C-CP/MAS spectra. 相似文献

The interest in improving the yield and productivity values of relevant microbial fermentations is an increasingly important issue for the scientific community. Therefore, several strategies have been tested for the stimulation of microbial growth and manipulation of their metabolic behavior. One promising approach involves the performance of fermentative processes during non-conventional conditions, which includes high pressure (HP), electric fields (EF) and ultrasound (US). These advanced technologies are usually applied for microbial inactivation in the context of food processing. However, the approach described in this study focuses on the use of these technologies at sub-lethal levels, since the aim is microbial growth and fermentation under these stress conditions. During these sub-lethal conditions, microbial strains develop specific genetic, physiologic and metabolic stress responses, possibly leading to fermentation products and processes with novel characteristics. In some cases, these modifications can represent considerable improvements, such as increased yields, productivities and fermentation rates, lower accumulation of by-products and/or production of different compounds. Although several studies report the successful application of these technologies during the fermentation processes, information on this subject is still scarce and poorly understood. For that reason, the present review paper intends to assemble and discuss the main findings reported in the literature to date, and aims to stimulate interest and encourage further developments in this field. 相似文献
