The seed development and composition of Medicago truncatula Gaertn., the new model plant for grain legumes, was studied using nine genotypes of the species complex: M. truncatula-Medicago littoralis (M. truncatula). The seed development of M. truncatula was very similar to that of other legumes, the only notable exception being the presence, in the mature seed, of an endosperm layer that is absent in grain legumes. During early embryogenesis and until mid-maturation, transient storage of starch occurred in the seed coat and embryo. This temporary storage probably contributed to the early development of the embryo and reserve synthesis. During maturation the synthesis and accumulation of proteins and oil took place at quasi-constant rates. Conversely oligosaccharides, mainly stachyose, were synthesised only during late maturation and at the beginning of desiccation. Proteins represented the major class of storage compounds and their average amino acid composition was found to be very close to that of pea and robust in various environmental conditions. Similar compositions between the two species and other grain legumes were also found for the fatty acids and the soluble sugars; most of these characters varied depending on the various environmental conditions used for seed production. All these similarities fully justify the use of M. truncatula as a model plant for genomic approaches to grain legume improvement. The major difference between M. truncatula seeds and European grain legume seeds resides in the nature of their carbon storage namely triacylglycerides for M. truncatula and starch for pea and faba bean.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of pinealectomy on adipose tissue metabolism at different times of day. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: pinealectomized and control (sham-operated). Eight weeks after surgery, the animals were killed at three different times (at 8.00 a.m., at 4.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m.). We collected blood samples for glucose, insulin, corticosterone, and leptin determinations, and periepididymal adipocytes for in vitro insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, oxidation, and incorporation into lipids. Pinealectomy caused insulin resistance as measured by 2-deoxyglucose uptake (a fall of approximately 40 % in the maximally insulin-stimulated rates) accompanied by hypercorticosteronemia at the three time points investigated without changes in plasma insulin an or leptin levels. Furthermore, pinealectomy increased the insulin-induced glucose incorporation into lipids (77 %) at 4.00 p.m. and insulin-induced glucose oxidation in the morning and in the afternoon, while higher rates were observed in the evening and in the morning in control rats. In conclusion, cell responsiveness to insulin was differentially affected by pineal ablation and time of day, and persistent insulin resistance was obtained in pinealectomized rats. We hypothesize that pinealectomy exposes the animal to an inadequate match between energy requirements and fuel mobilization.  相似文献

Ecology studies often require large datasets. The benefits of citizen science for collecting such datasets include the extension of spatial and temporal scales, and cost reduction. In classical citizen science, citizens collect data and send them directly to scientists. This may not be possible for the many biological groups for which specimen identification is difficult and requires high-level expertise. Here we report the results of an expert-assisted citizen science program where teachers from 20 French agricultural high schools collected bees, which were identified to species level by a panel of expert bee taxonomists. Overall the dataset included 70 collections (year?×?sampling site combinations) that resulted in 4574 specimens belonging to 195 species. We analysed this dataset using data freely available at a national scale on agriculture intensity and landscape composition. We found that species richness increased with increasing proportion of herbaceous semi-natural elements; species dominance decreased with increasing crop diversity; the proportion of above ground nesting species and specimens increased as the intensity of agricultural practices decreased. Comparing the results obtained with identification to species level and those obtained with higher taxa or parataxonomic approaches, we found that the loss of taxonomic resolution resulted in the non-significance of some results on the effects of environmental variables on bee assemblage-level attributes. Our study suggests that identification to species level is of great importance to detect the effects of global change on bees and that an expert-assisted citizen science paradigm could provide relevant results to guide conservation measures at a national scale.  相似文献

Estimating the locomotion type of fossil ground birds is necessary for a better understanding of their ecology. Until now, only one method has allowed us to estimate the locomotion of fossil ground birds, but its application is complicated in the majority of fossil cases because it requires data from the three bones from the same hindlimb of one individual. Here, we propose a new method using only the maximum length and minimum width of the tarsometatarsus to estimate the locomotion of these fossil birds. This method is easy to apply and better distinguishes the intermediate cases between graviportal (walking) and cursorial (running) birds. This study shows that the species of large ground birds of the families Gastornithidae and Brontornithidae were all graviportal, probably because of their large body mass. More unexpectedly, it also shows that some Phorusrhacidae (e.g. Paraphysornis), usually described as cursorial birds, were in fact graviportal, probably because of their considerable body mass. All these new data about locomotion provide a better understanding of the ecology of fossil ground birds.  相似文献

Trinomys is a very diverse mammalian genus of eastern Brazil, comprising ten species. Eight of them have remained in their original biome, the Atlantic Forest, while two others occupy the semi‐arid Caatinga. One of the species from the Atlantic Forest, T. eliasi, also inhabits adjacent restingas, an open vegetation ecosystem on sandy sediments of marine origin. Here we assess the impact of colonization of very different environments on the rates of phenotypic change in Trinomys. Multivariate analyses showed that species that had remained in the Atlantic Forest maintained a strong cohesion in skull shape and size. By contrast, colonization of the Caatinga was associated with remarkable differentiation and a strong increase in the rates of phenotypic change, 7–17 times higher than in the Atlantic Forest. Trinomys eliasi from restinga differed from forest samples and other species by a recent change in morphology. Our findings showed that occupation of remarkably different ecosystems had a significant impact in the phenotypic evolution of Trinomys.  相似文献

Biological invasions can promote secondary contacts between related species and thus provide excellent case studies for investigating the joint ecological and evolutionary trajectories of interfertile taxa. Here, we studied two tunicates living in sympatry, and sometimes in syntopy, in the English Channel, Ciona intestinalis species A (presumed native to the NW Pacific) and species B (native to the N Atlantic). In addition to monitoring their co-existence over time, we examined the level of interspecific gene flow, a process that may increase the invasiveness of the non-native species. The sampling scheme was repeated twice a year for 3 years (six distinct generations) to determine the relative abundance of the two species in 11 localities along the coasts of the English Channel and the Iroise Sea (covering 1600 km) in Brittany, France. We examined 23,000 individuals, including 5315 specimens for which reproductive status was determined. Four species-diagnostic molecular markers traced interspecific gene flow on a random subset of 3048 individuals. Regardless of the sampling date, the two species co-occurred in most of the study sites, with species A showing higher frequency in the autumn. The regional pattern of seasonal variation in relative abundance of the two congeners appears to correspond to different thermal growth optima. Abrupt variations in environmental parameters can act synergistically and may favor the non-native species locally. Despite syntopy, synchronous gamete production and successful in vitro interspecific crosses, only 4.3 % individuals showed an admixed genome (i.e. footprint of present-day or past introgression events), most of them with a species A maternal lineage, of which only one was a putative first generation hybrid. Altogether, efficient barriers seem to prevent interspecific crosses between the two interfertile congeners in the wild: present-day hybridization may have less impact than competitive interactions on the fate of the two study species over their sympatric range.  相似文献
