Studies with disparate taxa suggest that generalist populations are composed of relatively specialist individuals that use a narrow part of a population's resource pool. Models based on optimum diet theory (ODT) can be used to predict different patterns of variation in resource use among individuals. In this work, we investigated the diet and measured the degree of individual specialization of three anuran species, Hypsiboas leptolineatus, Pseudis cardosoi and Scinax granulatus, from the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil. The study is based on gut content obtained using a stomach‐flushing technique. Additionally, we tested for a correlation between the individuals’ diet and morphological variation. Furthermore, we applied methods based on network theory to investigate patterns of resource use among individuals of each species. All three study species showed generalized diets and significant values of individual specialization. However, we did not find any correlation between diet and morphology, indicating that diet variation is not a consequence of morphological trade‐offs. The individual‐resource networks of H. leptolineatus and S. granulatus showed a nested pattern. This result indicates the presence of individuals with more diverse diets than others, and the diets of the more specialist individuals are a predictable subset of the diets of the more generalist ones. The individual‐resource network of P. cardosoi did not show a distinct pattern, diverging from what was predicted by optimal diet theory‐based models. Although nested or modular patterns are commonly found in individual‐resource networks, our results indicate that they are not ubiquitous and that random patterns can also be found.  相似文献

Biodiversity loss and anthropogenic environmental changes are known to impact ecosystem functions and services. However, there are still some uncertainties such as confounding environmental factors other than community attributes that affect ecosystem functioning. Our goal was to understand what factors influence the performance of Scarabaeinae dung beetle functions, testing the hypothesis that both community attributes and environmental variables influence the performance. Toward this aim, we collected dung beetles along an elevational gradient (800–1400 m a.s.l.) in the Espinhaço mountain range (Brazil) and quantified dung beetle functions, that is, dung removal, soil excavation and secondary seed dispersal. We recorded data on environmental factors related to climate, soil and vegetation and evaluated their effects on dung beetle functions. Dung beetle ecological functions declined with elevation and the decrease was more pronounced than richness, indicating that there are other factors involved in functions performance besides diversity of beetles. Indeed, we found that the ecological functions measured were dependent on both dung beetle community attributes and environmental factors. Climate, soil and vegetation influenced dung beetle function performance as much as richness, abundance and body size. Dung beetle functional diversity did not explain any of the functions measured. Our study demonstrates that ecological functions are directly influenced by both community attributes and environmental variables and confirms the link between biodiversity, environment and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

There are very few reports on the establishment of long-term embryogenic cell cultures of banana, especially of triploid cultivars of commercial interest. Embryogenic cell suspensions were prepared using the cultivar Grand nain, the most widely grown dessert banana in the world. After culture for 5 or 6 months of immature male flowerbuds adjacent to the floral apex, yellow, compact calluses and white, friable embryogenic tissues were induced. Suspension cultures were initiated from embryogenic tissues placed in liquid medium. The packed cell volume (PCV) of the suspensions increased 2- to 5- fold with each monthly culture cycle. Plating of the embryogenic suspensions resulted in approximately 370×103 embryos per ml of PCV. Depending on the size of embryos, 3 to 20% germination was observed. A histological survey of cell suspensions and embryo development was carried out. Cellular aggregates with cells displaying typical embryogenic features were formed. Most of the somatic embryos were probably of unicellular origin.  相似文献

This study evaluated one semi-direct and three indirect methods for estimating leaf area index (LAI) by comparing these estimates with direct estimates derived from litter collection. The semi-direct method uses a thin metallic needle to count a number of contacts across fresh litter layers. One indirect method is based on the penetration of diffuse global radiation measured over the course of a day. The second indirect method uses the LAI-2000 plant canopy analyser (PCA) which measures diffuse light penetration from five different sky sectors simultaneously. The third indirect method uses the Demon portable light sensor to measure the penetration of direct beam sunlight at different zenith angles over the course of half a day. The Poisson model of gap frequency was applied to estimate plant area index (PAI) from observed transmittances using the second and third methods. Litter collection from 11 temperate decidous forests gave values of LAI ranging from 1.7 to 7.5. Estimates based on the needle method showed a significant linear relationship with LAI values obtained from litter collections but were systematically lower (by 6–37%). PAI estimates using all three indirect techniques (fixed light sensor system, LAI-2000 and Demon) showed a strong linear relationship with LAI derived from litter collection. Differences, averaged over all forest stands, between PAI estimates from each of the three indirect methods and LAI from litter collections were below 2%. If we consider that LAI=PAI–WAI (wood area index) then, all three indirect methods underestimated LAI by an additional factor close to the value of WAI. One reason could be a local clumping of architectural canopy components: in particular, the spatial dispositions of branchlets and leaves are not independent, leading to a non-random relationship between the distributions of these two canopy components.  相似文献

Four different intertidal estuarine sediments had distinct yeast communities. One-hundred-ninety-three yeast isolates were classified in 47 species, with 34 of these in the genus Candida. Candida tropicalis was the only ascomycetous species isolated from all four sites. Other opportunistic pathogens including Candida glabrata, Candida guilliermondii, Candida parapsilosis and Candida krusei were present, especially at the more polluted sites. Pichia species were also frequent isolates with Pichia membranaefaciens, and its anamorph, Candida valida, and other phenotypically similar low assimilation profile species the most frequent. Kluyveromyces aestuarii was prevalent at the only site with well established mangrove vegetation, but not present at the other sites. The sediment yeast communities were distinct from each other, but more similar to each other than to the yeast communities of other ecosystems in the same geographic region.  相似文献

Metabolic changes associated with sustained 48-hr shivering thermogenesis were studied in piglets maintained at 34 (thermoneutrality) or 25°C (cold) between 6 and 54 hr of life. Despite their high shivering activity and elevated heat production, cold-exposed piglets exhibited a slightly lower rectal temperature than thermoneutral animals (-1.1°C; P < 0.01) at the end of the treatment. The enhancement of heat production and shivering activity were associated with a decrease in muscle glycogen (− 47%; P < 0.05) and total lipid content (− 23%; P < 0.05), a reduction of blood lactate levels (P < 0.05) and an enhancement of muscle cytochrome oxidase activity (+20%;P < 0.05), which suggests that muscle oxidative potential was increased by cold exposure. Potential for capturing lipids (lipoprotein lipase activity) was also higher in the redrhomboideus muscle (+ 71%; P < 0.01) and lower in adipose tissue (−58%; P < 0.01) of the cold-exposed piglets. Measurements performed at the mitochondrial level show no changes inrhomboideus muscle, but respiratory capacities (state IV and FCCP-stimulated respiration) and intermyofibrillar mitochondria oxidative and phosphorylative (creatine kinase activity) capacities were enhanced inlongissimus dorsi muscle (P < 0.05). These changes may contribute to provide muscles with nonlimiting amount of readily oxidable substrates and ATP necessary for shivering thermogenesis. A rise in plasma norepinephrine levels was also observed during the second day of cold exposure (P < 0.05).  相似文献

Synaptotagmins are synaptic vesicle proteins containing two calcium-binding C2 domains which are involved in coupling calcium influx through voltage-gated channels to vesicle fusion and exocytosis of neurotransmitters. The interaction of synaptotagmins with native P/Q-type calcium channels was studied in solubilized synaptosomes from rat cerebellum. Antibodies against synaptotagmins I and II, but not IV co-immunoprecipitated [125I]omega-conotoxin MVIIC-labelled calcium channels. Direct interactions were studied between in vitro-translated [35S]synaptotagmin I and fusion proteins containing cytoplasmic loops of the alpha1A subunit (BI isoform). Gel overlay revealed the association of synaptotagmin I with a single region (residues 780-969) located in the intracellular loop connecting homologous domains II and III. Saturable calcium-independent binding occurred with equilibrium dissociation constants of 70 nM and 340 nM at 4 degrees C and pH 7.4, and association was blocked by addition of excess recombinant synaptotagmin I. Direct synaptotagmin binding to the pore-forming subunit of the P/Q-type channel may optimally locate the calcium-binding sites that initiate exocytosis within a zone of voltage-gated calcium entry.  相似文献

We have developed a model for the two immunoglobulin-like extracellular domains DII and DIII of the FGF receptor 1 (FGFR-1), giving a special attention to the determination of the appropriate Ig set. The DII domain was aligned with the C-terminal domain of myosin light chain kinase (telokin) of the I set, and the DIII domain with the variable domain of the Bence-Jones immunoglobulin of the V set. When treated with retinoic acidin vivo, C6 glioma cells show an enhancement of CMP-Neu5Ac:Gal 1–3 GalNAc-R -2,3 sialyltransferase activity. A 300kDa glycoprotein was detected by lectin affinoblotting in retinoic acid-treated C6 cells which stained weakly or not at all in control cells. Comparative studies with different lectins demonstrated that this glycoprotein contains 2,3 Neu5Ac Gal-GalNAc O-glycan moieties. Logné, one of three raised bogs (Hochmoor) in the Massif Armorican, was officially designated as a nature reserve in 1987 and is of considerable ecological interest from botanical, ornithological and herpetological aspects. Palynological investigations reveal the history of local and regional vegetation during the last ca. 4000 years. From the end of the Neolithic Age to the present day, changes in the bog appear to have been considerably influenced by variations in local watertable level that may be of natural origin or caused by human activity. Alder carr withOsmunda regalis, which was the dominant vegetation around the periphery of the bog at ca. 4200 B.P., underwent many changes. Its final demise occurred in Gallo-Roman times when the local landscape took on a distinctly open appearance. The first clear evidence for cereal cultivation relates to the Bronze Age. After a decline in farming at the beginning of the Iron Age, there was a strong renewal of farming in the La Tène period, which included a distinct arable component and also records forJuglans andCastanea pollen. The timing of the introduction of walnut and chestnut to the Massif Armorican is discussed.  相似文献
