In this report, the collaborative efforts of cardiologists and surgeons to provide optimal treatment of patients with rhythm disturbances are discussed, along with definitive advances in new surgical techniques to relieve supraventricular tachycardia and paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia. We have shown that tellurite and tellurate require the interaction with reduced glutathione (GSH) to hemolyze human erythrocytes.
The study of the nature of this interaction is the main object of this paper. The degree of hemolysis was determined by the
method of Angelone. The addition of extracellular 1 mM GSH or cysteine increased the rate of hemolysis. Concanavalin A (0.3
mg/mL) and/or 4 mg/mL adenosine did not affect the hemolysis by 0.1 mM tellurite. One tenth to 1 mM 4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyanostilbene-2,2′-disulfonate
(SITS) inhibited this hemolysis by 60–100%. Millimolar GSH released this inhibition. Incubation of 0.1 mM tellurite with 1
mM GSH for 90 min at 37°C, produced a hemolytic agent when prepared and tested under nitrogen, but one that was not active
when prepared in air. The hemolysis byp-hydroxymercuribenzoate orp-hydroxymercuriphenylsulfonate did not involve GSH. Scanning electron micrographs showed a sphero-echinocyte transformation,
in the pre-hemolytic stage, with all the agents tested. The rate of penetration of tellurite plays a role in determining the
rate of hemolysis, as shown by the effect of SITS. The release by GSH of the inhibition by SITS poses questions concerning
the site of action and cell membrane penetration of the hemolytic agent. Telluride or some intermediate in the interaction

Summary Aminoacyl tRNA synthetases discriminate between tRNA species by a highly specific mechanism. Physical and chemical studies indicate that the synthetases bind along and around the inside of the three-dimensional L-shaped tRNA structure. Studies of mutant tRNAs that affect synthetase interaction tend to confirm this conclusion. However, in contrast to proteins that recognize a specific block of contiguous nucleotide units (e.g., repressors, restriction enzymes, etc.), synthetases appear to interact with spatially disperse elements of the structure. Available evidence suggests that tRNA binding clefts on various synthetases may be roughly similar, with specificity being achieved by the choice of amino acid residues in a few critical positions in the tRNA binding clefts. With this idea in mind, it should be possible to introduce amino acid substitutions into the binding clefts and thereby change tRNA recognition specificity. This has been attempted (by genetic manipulations) and a mutant alanine tRNA synthetase with altered tRNA recognition has been isolated. This enzyme can attach alanine to isoleucine specific tRNA. When presented with valine specific tRNA, a tRNA similar in some structural features to the isoleucine specific tRNA, or with the structurally quite different tyrosine specific tRNA, no significant aminoacylation occurs. Thus, a precise specificity alteration can occur through mutation; this result supports the idea of similarities in synthetase binding clefts, with specificity being achieved by the positioning of amino acids at critical positions in these clefts. Finally, further data have been obtained on the issue of possible transient covalent bond formation between synthetases and tRNAs, as a critical part of the interaction.Abbreviations tRNAx

Summary The follicle cells which surround the oocytes of starfish are known to both release the hormone 1-methyladenine and to respond to it by an active movement which forms a component of the spawning response to the hormone. In Patiria miniata these flagellated cells are located peripheral to the oocyte and have long cytoplasmic processes which penetrate the vitelline layer to the egg surface to form an adhering zonule-like junction. Within the follicle cell cytoplasm are located elongate filamentous bands which appear to represent a component of the contractile mechanism that mediates follicle cell response to 1-methyladenine. These bands do not resemble the filaments of vertebrate smooth muscle cells (quantity, distribution and size of filaments; lack of dense bodies in the filament mass), nor the contractile units of the superficial epithelium of lower vertebrate follicles.This investigation was supported by grants HD-07194 and HD-12499 from the National Institutes of Health. The "vectorial model" proposed in 1973 by Berglund et al. certainlyconstitutes an important progress in the field of olfactoryquantitative interaction. An alternative model called "U model",based also upon perceived odorous intensity of a mixture asa function of perceived odorous intensity of the components,is here presented. The "U model" fits the experimental data of Cain and Drexler(1974) and of Cain (1975) slightly better than the "vectorialmodel".

The case records of patients with extradural haematomas treated in the Lothian region during 1951-60 and 1968-77 were analysed to assess the effect of delay in treatment on morbidity and mortality. Delay was defined as the time from deterioration in level of consciousness to surgical evacuation of clot. There were 83 supratentorial extradural haematomas unassociated with intradural clot or contusion. The mean delay in patients who died was 15.7 hours, while in good-quality survivors the mean delay was 1.9 hours. Mortality decreased from 33.3% during 1951-60 to 8.9% during 1968-77. In addition, good recovery without morbidity occurred in 40.7% of patients in the earlier period and 67.9% in the later period. Mean delays from deterioration in level of consciousness to operation were 9.8 and 2.4 hours in the earlier and later periods respectively. The results emphasise the need for immediate operation in patients deteriorating with extradural haematomas. Direct admission of all head-injured patients to a head and spinal injuries unit staffed by neurosurgeons resulted in minimal delay times as well as a reduction in morbidity and mortality. 相似文献

Fichtenchloroplasten durchlaufen während eines Jahres saisonbedingte charakteristische Struktur- und Funktionswechsel: Frühjahrschloroplasten, die in den alten Nadeln kurz vor und während des Knospenaustriebes gefunden werden, sind sehr groß und so sehr mit Stärke erfüllt, daß man sie als Amyloplasten bezeichnen kann. Beim Aufbau der neuen Nadelgeneration wird diese Stärke verbraucht, und es entwickeln sich aus den Amyloplasten wieder die photosynthetisch aktiven Sommerpiastiden mit einem gut entwickelten Membransystem. Während der Frosthärtung und insbesondere während der Frostperiode treten die Chloroplasten in ihrer Winterform auf: amöboide, an einer Stelle der Zelle konzentrierte, stark aufgequollene Plastiden mit einem aufgelockerten und zum Teil reduzierten Thylakoidsystem. Der Strukturwandel der Chloroplasten wird — wie die Frostresistenz selbst — durch exogene Faktoren (Tageslänge, Temperatur) ausgelöst und kann auch durch artifiziell veränderte Umgebung zu unnatürlichen Zeitpunkten ausgelöst werden. Begleitet wird der Strukturwandel von einer Veränderung der CO2-Fixierungsrate der Fichtennadeln, die ihrerseits auf Veränderungen der photochemischen Aktivität der Chloroplasten zurückzuführen ist. In Frostexperimenten konnte gezeigt werden, daß die Frosthärtung Reaktionen auf zwei verschiedenen Ebenen auslöst: 1. Produktion von kolligativ wirksamen Membranschutzstoffen sowie 2. einer Veränderung der chemischen Zusammensetzung der Chloroplastenmembranen; zumindest letztere führt offensichtlich zu einer Verringerung der Photosyntheseleistung. Frostschädigung der Chloroplasten tritt bei nicht entsprechend stark gehärteten Nadeln auf, jedoch nicht durch direkten Einfluß der tiefen Temperatur auf das Thylakoidsystem als vielmehr durch Freisetzung membranschädigender Substanzen durch Permeabilitätsverlust plasmatischer Membranen. Summary The melanoma of Sinclair swine exhibits several characteristics similar to human melanoma but demonstrates an unusually high
incidence of spontaneous regression. A total of 66 finite cell lines derived from 21 swine melanotic lesions, both cutaneous
and visceral, were studied in vitro over their life spans of up to 14 months. The growth characteristics of the cultures varied
with the age of the swine from which the tumors were obtained. Cell cultures of tumors obtained from swine aged less than
2 months grew steadily in culture with a population-doubling time of 120 to 180 hr until growth and division ceased after
a maximum of 25 to 35 population doublings (6 to 8 passages). Cell culture of tumors obtained from swine aged 3 months or
older showed a biphasic growth pattern with an early slow growth rate (population-doubling time 120 to 160 hr), which shifted
after 3 to 6 passages to a faster rate (80 to 110 hr population-doubling time) until termination of growth and division after
a maximum of 75 to 85 population doublings (18 to 20 passages). The cultures were morphologically heterogeneous including
cuboidal, spindle and dendritic cell types. Electron microscopy showed classic melanosomes only in the primary and passage
1 cultures although vesicular inclusions were numerous in later-passage cells. However, continued melanin synthesis was indicated
by the spectroscopic characteristics of material obtained from medium of passage 8 cultures and by DOPA staining of cultures
as advanced as passage 18.

A stereotyped pattern of spontaneous, rhythmic bursting in motoneurons of three prinicipal uropod muscles in the sand crab Emerita analoga has been recorded from a deafferented chain of the foru most-posterior abdominal ganglia. This endogenous motor program resembles the electromyogram pattern recorded from return-stroke and power-stroke muscles in swimming crabs in that (1) latencies of power-stroke bursts and burst periods are positively correlated with each other and (2) durations of power-stroke bursts are brief and mearly invarient. The endogenous program differs from the electromyogram pattern in having longer periods and return-stroke bursts which are brief and sporadic. The neural oscillator underlying the endogenous motor program, therefore, appears to drive the power stroke. Circumstantial evidence suggests that it may also inhibit return-stroke motoneurons concurrently with excitation of the power-stroke excitor. 相似文献
