The maximum excretion rate of NH4 (39 nmol mg dry wt–1h–1) was directly measured for Daphnia pulex by measuringNH4 accumulation in bottles containing D. pulex and dense, satiatingsuspensions of heat-killed algae. Ammonium release rates inthe algal suspensions were compared to those of individual animalsremoved from the suspension and placed in flow cells. Ammoniumrelease rate, R (nmol mg dry wt–1 h–1). in the flowcell decreased very rapidly with time, t (min), after removalaccording to the relation R = 26 + 25e–0.16t. Ammoniumexcretion obtained by the flow cell method after extrapolationto time zero was not significantly different from that obtainedin the bottles. The considerable experiment-to-experiment variationin NH4 excretion was in large part correlated (r2 = 0.73) withthe feeding rate on the algae.  相似文献

Summary Earlier studies found that cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) cotyledons contain several mRNAs which are more abundant during late embryogenesis than in mid-embryogenesis or early germination. They are here termed Late embryogenesis-abundant mRNAs, encoded by Lea loci. Complementary DNA clones for 18 such mRNA sequences, defined at a hybridization criterion of Tm-15°C, were identified in a mature embryo cDNA library by differential cDNA hybridization. At a lower hybridization criterion, some sequence homology was found within several of these cloned Lea mRNA sequences. Each Lea mRNA sequence comprises 0.04–1.3% of mature embryo poly(A)+ mRNA, a level ten-fold to several hundred-fold higher than in young embryo or 24 h seedling poly(A)+ mRNA. Of 18 Lea mRNA sequences examined in cultured young embryos, the level of at least 13 are specifically increased by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA), several to a level near that in normal mature embryos. However, the abundance of several of the sequences does not appear to be significantly modulated by ABA. The LEA polypeptides encoded by 10 Lea mRNA sequences were identified by hybrid-arrested translation. They include most of the late embryogenesis-abundant, ABA-inducible, polypeptides previously identified. Preliminary results suggest that many of the individual Lea mRNA sequences are transcribed from 1–3 genes in each of cotton's two subgenomes.  相似文献

Summary Electro-olfactograms (EOGs) were used to assess olfactory responding by aquatic larval and terrestrial adult tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) to airborne volatile compounds, and volatile and non-volatile compounds in aqueous solution. Both forms of salamander showed saturation effects to presentations of airborne stimuli (Fig. 2). Saturation was not observed, however, to stimulus presentations in aqueous solution (Figs. 2, 3). When threshold values and concentration-response curve parameters were compared, non-volatile amino acids in solution were more potent stimuli for larvae while airborne volatiles were more potent stimuli for adults (Tables 1, 2). We infer that metamorphosis in the tiger salamander is accompanied by changes in olfactory response characteristics, due possibly to changes in receptor population, changes in perireceptor properties (e.g. mucus) or to changes in stimulus access.Abbreviations EOG electro-olfactogram - PPM (ppm) parts per million  相似文献

Widespread mortality of the black sea urchin Diadema antillarum occurred in the Caribbean in 1983; beginning in Panama in January, and having its major impact at Barbados in September. Mortality on ten reefs surveyed in Barbados was 93.2%, with the highest being 99.9% and the lowest 86.9%. Mortality on each reef was independent of the pre-mortality density on the reef. Urchins with test diameters between 20 and 40 mm were more severely affected than smaller or larger urchins. Populations on reefs exposed to incoming oceanic water suffered heavier mortality than those on protected reefs. Mean size of urchins was smallest on high density reefs. This may indicate a negative effect of density on urchin growth. At post-mortality densities, urchins may grow faster and reach sexual maturity sooner.  相似文献

The prevalence of parasitic infection by larval digenetic trematodes in natural populations of the mud snail, Cerithidea californica Haldeman, was found to increase with snail length; all snails ≥ 33 mm were infected. Distributions of infections by the seven most common larval trematodes were heterogeneous due to two species being more common than expected in the smaller size classes of snails, two being more common than expected in the larger size-classes of snails and three species being most prevalent in snails of intermediate length. The relative abundances of trematodes in different size-classes reflected these distributional patterns.A mark-recapture field study of snail growth rates failed to demonstrate that parasitic infection causes gigantism in Cerithidea. Parasitism tended to stunt the growth of juvenile snails and to a lesser degree, that of adult snails. The effects of trematodes on snail growth was shown to be species specific. This finding contrasts with those of earlier studies in which gigantic growth was observed in infected snails. This discrepancy is attributed to differences in the life histories of the host snails. It is predicted that gigantism will occur commonly in short-lived or semelparous species of snails but rarely, if ever, in long-lived iteroparous species which are predominately marine.  相似文献

Before Western contact, Alaskan Native populations were self-sufficient in their health practices. Slowly, the Native health care system was replaced by a Western one which was highly effective in treating infectious diseases. As infectious diseases were brought under control by the Indian Health Service, the emergent leading health problems were related to violence, attributed in part to cultural disintegration. New types of Native health providers and new Native-controlled institutions evolved to provide culturally appropriate health and mental health services and to promote a stronger cultural identity.  相似文献

Employment of a commercially integrated gel chromatography system together with the utilization of cross-linked polyacrylamide as the chromatographic medium simplifies the methodology of hydrogen-tritium exchange measurements. The system described allows the execution of hydrogen-tritium exchange measurements with as little as 0.5 mg protein per time point and with only a single pass of sample through the column for out-exchange of <1 min to at least 24 h. 1. Kinetics of fructose 1,6-diphosphate activation of liver pyruvate kinase type I inhibited with MgATP and l-alanine are described as a function of enzyme and fructose 1,6-diphosphate concentrations. These results can be explained by a single pseudo-first-order transition of the enzyme into an active form, independent of the enzyme concentration. This rate constant, k(app.)=0.24s(-1) with 0.02mm-fructose 1,6-diphosphate (t(0.9) approximately 10s where t(0.9) is the time for 90% conversion), is an increasing function of fructose 1,6-diphosphate concentration far beyond that needed to maximally activate enzyme equilibrated with fructose 1,6-diphosphate (about 20mum). 2. The model equations are best analysed with numerical techniques which are described. These techniques are useful in studying similar slow transients frequently observed in stopped-flow studies of enzymes. 3. Shorter transients (t(0.9)=0.5-1.5s) were observed in the kinetic response of the enzyme to the addition of MgATP or phosphoenolpyruvate, but were not further characterized.  相似文献

The referential aspect of a concept can be defined by a disjunction of conjunations of attributes. A single neuron can represent a disjunction of conjunctions of attributes if the assumption that neurons are single-threshold devices is discarded. Instead, one must assume that such concept neurons are composed of hundreds or thousands of (high-threshold) receptive areas, each containing tens or hundreds of synaptic sites. When essentially all of the sites of a receptive area are activated in close temporal contiguity, the receptive area generates a local (spike) response which is assumed to be sufficient to fire the cell body and axon of the neuron. If we assume that all concepts possessed by a single human being can be encoded by single neurons in this manner, there are enough neurons in the human cortex only if we assume that most of these concept neurons are specified by learning. Genetic specification is ruled out by the enormous (infinite?) nember of possible concepts humans appear to be able to learn. Therefore, a speculative neural mechanism is presented regarding how “free” neurons could become specified by learning.  相似文献
