Inbreeding and enemy infestation are common in plants and can synergistically reduce their performance. This inbreeding ×environment (I × E) interaction may be of particular importance for the success of plant invasions if introduced populations experience a release from attack by natural enemies relative to their native conspecifics. Here, we investigate whether inbreeding affects plant infestation damage, whether inbreeding depression in growth and reproduction is mitigated by enemy release, and whether this effect is more pronounced in invasive than native plant populations. We used the invader Silene latifolia and its natural enemies as a study system. We performed two generations of experimental out‐ and inbreeding within eight native (European) and eight invasive (North American) populations under controlled conditions using field‐collected seeds. Subsequently, we exposed the offspring to an enemy exclusion and inclusion treatment in a common garden in the species’ native range to assess the interactive effects of population origin (range), breeding treatment, and enemy treatment on infestation damage, growth, and reproduction. Inbreeding increased flower and leaf infestation damage in plants from both ranges, but had opposing effects on fruit damage in native versus invasive plants. Inbreeding significantly reduced plant fitness; whereby, inbreeding depression in fruit number was higher in enemy inclusions than exclusions. This effect was equally pronounced in populations from both distribution ranges. Moreover, the magnitude of inbreeding depression in fruit number was lower in invasive than native populations. These results support that inbreeding has the potential to reduce plant defenses in S. latifolia, which magnifies inbreeding depression in the presence of enemies. However, future studies are necessary to further explore whether enemy release in the invaded habitat has actually decreased inbreeding depression and thus facilitated the persistence of inbred founder populations and invasion success.  相似文献

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by a multitude of low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) mutations. The purpose of the current investigation was to define the spectrum of mutations causing FH in Israel and determine their relative distribution among diverse origin groups. A total of 193 FH families were recruited in Israel, 54 of them through the MED PED (Make Early Diagnosis Prevent Early Death) FH program. Molecular analysis of the LDL-R using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) or denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) or both has been completed in 95 index cases. This analysis resulted in the identification of 15 LDL receptor mutations, including 7 novel mutations (del 197, C308G, R385W, splice junction mutation of intron 14, del 328, del 502–505, stop 10, del 165), that were present in 49 index cases (52%). The 15 mutations are mapped to three known functional domains of the receptor (7 in the LDL-binding region, 7 in the epidermal growth factor precursor homology region and 1 in the membrane-spanning region). Screening for the identified mutations in the remaining 98 index cases enabled the molecular diagnosis of 31 additional cases. It is therefore concluded that 80 out of 193 index cases (41%) harbor 1 of the 15 mutations described here. Three mutations – del197 (FH-Lithuania), D147H (FH-Sephardic), and stop660 (Lebanese allele) – were found in a total of 66 index cases (34%); these may be regarded as founder mutations in the three respective origin groups. In conclusion, in Israel molecular heterogeneity at the LDL receptor gene locus reflects the ethnic distribution of its origin groups. The results of the present investigation provide valuable diagnostic tools for a subset of the Israeli patients with FH who are at high risk for atherosclerosis and its complications. Atrial natriuretic factor-like immunoreactivity (ir-ANF) was characterized in a continuous line of rat thyroid follicular cells (FRTL-5) and the influence of the calcium ionophore A23187 on ir-ANF secretion was examined. Ir-ANF was identified by immunohistochemical staining as primarily reticular and juxtanuclear in short-term cultures, and more peripheral and granular in longer-term cultures, suggesting a process of ir-ANF packaging into secretory granules. The accumulation of ir-ANF granules was dependent upon the presence of thyrotropin (TSH) in the medium. Secreted ir-ANF was characterized using reversed-phase, high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and radioimmunoassay as a single peak eluting one fraction earlier than 125I-labeled rat ANF (99-126) (i.e., circulating atrial ANF) included as an internal standard. A23187 treatment of cells exhibiting primarily reticular ir-ANF caused a change to a pattern of more distinct, peripherally localized granules. This change occurred within 1 h after A23187 treatment and was dependent on the presence of Ca2+ in the medium. In cultures containing primarily ir-ANF granules, A23187 (0.5 micrograms/ml) induced a peripheral translocation of the granules at 30 min and a complete degranulation by 7 h. Enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent assay (EIA) confirmed a dose-dependent effect of A23187 on ir-ANF release into the medium. These results suggest that some of the effects of Ca2+ in the thyroid could be ascribed to its mobilization and release of ir-ANF, which in turn may have autocrine effects on thyroid follicular cells.  相似文献

Two dung beetle subspecies of Canthon rutilans Castelnau (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae), C. rutilans rutilans and C. rutilans cyanescens, inhabit different environmental temperature conditions in southern Brazil. We developed a laboratory breeding experiment with 60 pairs of individuals of the two subspecies at five temperature conditions (from 15 to 35 °C) to compare the influence of temperature on the behaviour of adults and the development of larvae. The behavioural patterns of the adults in both subspecies differ according to temperature. The size of food balls was smaller and lighter in C. rutilans cyanescens. Although temperature did not influence the feeding behaviour (measured as the number of food balls made), reproductive behaviour (measured as the number of brood balls made by pair) was significantly lower at 15 °C for both subspecies. Besides that, brood balls from C. rutilans rutilans were bigger and heavier at lower temperatures. The number of offspring and the time of emergence depend on temperature too. However, the weight of the offspring and the longevity of adults depend on the subspecies and temperature treatment. These results demonstrate that the subspecies have different thermal adaptations: C. rutilans rutilans has reproductive behaviour adapted to living under colder and broader conditions than C. rutilans cyanescens.  相似文献
