We assembled information on the contribution and value of forests to world food security. An assessment was made of the role of forests and non-timber products in the food system of developing countries. We estimated that upwards of 300 million people annually earn part or all of their livelihood and food from forests. A total of about $90 billion in non-timber products are harvested each year. Forests also help to protect land, water, and biological resources, and they play an important role in maintaining the productivity of agricultural and environmental systems.  相似文献

A family exhibiting heteroplasmy at position 16 355 in hypervariable region I of the human mtDNA control region has been identified. This family consists of a mother, daughter, and son. DNA samples extracted from blood stains, buccal swabs, and hairs from these individuals were amplified by PCR and sequenced utilizing fluoresence-labeled dye terminator chemistry in an automated DNA sequencer. In both the daughter and mother, heteroplasmy was observed in DNA extracted from blood stains, buccal swabs, and hairs. In the blood stains, the proportion of cytosine was greater than thymine in both individuals. Buccal swab extracts showed a more balanced contribution from the two nucleotides. Telogenic hair root and hair shaft samples exhibited a wide range of nucleotide contributions at this position, from predominately cytosine in some samples to predominately thymine in others. The apparent stochastic segregation of mitotypes in hair samples is discussed from a forensic viewpoint, and the mechanism of mtDNA heteroplasmy is considered. Some individuals in species with extended periods of territorial occupancy may change territory locations within a single bout of territorial activity. Length of occupancy of mating territories among males in a local population of white-faced dragonflies (Leucorrhinia intacta) varied from more than 6 h to 15 min or less. Males with short tenures often established territories in several locations on the pond during a day. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain shifting territorial sites rather than remaining in a single site during one bout of territoriality. We attempted to test the hypothesis that males shift to leave low-quality sites. Site quality may be affected by costs of defense in relation to intruder rate and the mating benefits of holding the territory. To test whether variation in these possible effects of benefits and costs of territoriality influenced tenure, we manipulated local quality of oviposition substrate and perch density. The quality of oviposition substrate, but not perch density, influenced both potential benefits and costs of territoriality. Female density was higher in areas with good substrate, but so were rates of males intruding into the territories, rates of chasing by territorial males, and local density of territorial males. More matings occurred in areas with good substrate, but among males with tenures of 15 min or more, mating success per male and tenure lengths did not differ statistically among treatments. Defense costs were low for all treatments and perhaps were not an important influence on tenure duration. Territorial males in this population probably adjusted local density to expected mating success by initial choice of site rather than by varying tenure length. Variation in tenure length at a site resulted, in part, from stochastic external factors, such as predation attempts.  相似文献

Site-specific mutations in the quinone binding sites of the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) protein complexes of Rhodobacter (R.) capsulatus caused pronounced effects on sequential electron transfer. Conserved residues that break the twofold symmetry in this region of the RC – M246Ala and M247Ala in the QA binding pocket, and L212Glu and L213Asp in the QB binding pocket – were targeted. We constructed a QB-site mutant, L212Glu-L213Asp Ala-Ala, and a QA-site mutant, M246Ala–M247Ala Glu-Asp, to partially balance the differences in charge distribution normally found between the two quinone binding sites. In addition, two photocompetent revertants were isolated from the photosynthetically-incompetent M246Glu-M247Asp mutant: M246Ala–M247Asp and M246Gly–M247Asp. Sequential electron transfer was investigated by continuous light excitation and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and time-resolved optical techniques. Several lines of EPR evidence suggested that the forward electron transfer rate to QA, kQ, was slowed in those strains containing altered QA sites. The slower rates of secondary electron transfer were confirmed by time-resolved optical results with the M246Glu-M247Asp mutations in the QA site resulting in a dramatically lowered secondary electron transfer efficiency [kQ < (2 ns)-1] in comparison with either the native R. capsulatus RC or the QB site mutant [kQ (200 ps)-1]. Secondary electron transfer in the two revertants was intermediate between that of the native RC and the QA mutant. The P+ QA- PQA charge recombination rates were also changed in the strains that carried altered QA sites. We show that local mutations in the QA site, presumably through local electrostatic changes, significantly alter binding and electron transfer properties of QA.  相似文献

Using a target-neighborhood approach with six annual dicot species in the Negev Desert of Israel, we tested whether neighborhood biomass constrained the upper limit of plant performance and if the slope of the upper boundary was correlated to species trait means, such as relative growth rate (RGR) and seed mass. Target individuals were measured in early spring and then collected at the onset of the dry season along with all naturally occurring neighbors within a 5-cm radius of the target. Using a minimum of 50 samples for each of the six target species, we found no significant relationships between target performance and either density or aboveground biomass of neighbors, when including all target individuals in the regressions. However, aboveground neighbor biomass did influence the maximum potential size of targets. When regressions were restricted to the largest target plant within classes of neighbor biomass, significant negative relationships were found for all six species, with neighbor biomass explaining 55 to 94% of the variance in maximum target biomass. The slopes of the regressions were used as an index of competitive response. The correlations between competitive response and estimates of species traits were not significant with the possible exception that species with lower RGRmax may be better response competitors (i.e. were less sensitive to competition). These findings indicate the usefulness of the boundary regression technique for describing competitive interactions among neighbors, particularly in low productivity environments.  相似文献

Bicarbonate is not freely permeable to membranes. Yet, bicarbonate must be moved across membranes, as part of CO2 metabolism and to regulate cell pH. Mammalian cells ubiquitously express bicarbonate transport proteins to facilitate the transmembrane bicarbonate flux. These bicarbonate transporters, which function by different transport mechanisms, together catalyse transmembrane bicarbonate movement. Recent advances have allowed the identification of several new bicarbonate transporter genes. Bicarbonate transporters cluster into two separate families: (i) the anion exachanger (AE) family of Cl-/HCO3- exchangers is related in sequence to the NBC family of Na+/HCO3- cotransporters and the Na(+)-dependent Cl/HCO3- exchangers and (ii) some members of the SLC26a family of sulfate transporters will also transport bicarbonate but are not related in sequence to the AE/NBC family of transporters. This review summarizes our understanding of the mammalian bicarbonate transporter superfamily.  相似文献

The effect of ionizing radiation on metabolic functions of alveolar macrophages (AM) have been well studied. However, variations associated to age have not been established yet. The aim of this work was to perform a comparative study on irradiated alveolar macrophages from young and aged rat lungs. Cell viability and occurrence of apoptosis as well as production of nitric oxide (NO), generation of superoxide anion (O2*-) and total antioxidant capacity were analyzed in vitro after exposure to gamma-irradiation with 10, 25, 50 and 75 Gy. Cell viability decreased only in the aged population at the higher doses. Morphological features of apoptosis were clearly evidenced in irradiated alveolar macrophages from aged animals although the DNA fragmentation assay for apoptosis showed no differences for either of the populations studied. NO production and total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP) levels showed a dose-dependent modulation. Low radiation doses inhibited the production of NO and decreased TRAP levels whereas higher doses enhanced the NO production and increased the TRAP levels in both macrophage populations. Generation of O2*- was always higher in the aged population for all the doses assayed. We conclude that in vitro young alveolar macrophages exhibited higher radioresistance over the whole range of doses as compared to the aged macrophage population. Our results show that the aging process markedly affects the radioresistance of phagocytic cells. Therefore, immune defense and inflammatory response of lungs from aged patients should be considered when planning radiotherapy protocols.  相似文献
