Study of the binding of jatrophone to Escherichia coli s-ribonucleic acid

The interaction of jatrophone with sRNA from Escherichia coli has been investigated through UV, CD, and 1H NMR measurements. The results obtained show that the interaction with jatrophone increases the stability of the polynucleotide. It appears that the optical properties of jatrophone depend upon the jatrophone/nucleotide ratio. The observed behaviour can only be explained by the existence of different types of interaction between jatrophone and sRNA. Even for a jatrophone/nucleotide ratio as low as 0.17 the 1H NMR spectra show a multiplicity of resonances that can only be explained by the simultaneous existence of two different binding modes involving the jatrophone molecules.     

Free amino acids from pollens

Pollens from Pinus canariensis, P. nigra, P. pinaster, P. pinea, Castanea sativa, Magnolia grandiflora, Olea sativa cv frantoio, cv itrana, cv pisciottana were examined for their free amino acid composition. A large amount of proline was found in all species; pollens of Olea also contain a large amount of serine.     

Inhibition of cardiolipin synthesis by end-products and other complex lipids in membrane preparations of Micrococcus lysodeikticus.

Using membrane preparations of Micrococcus lysodeikticus, the end-products of cardiolipin synthesis, cardiolipin and glycerol, were shown to inhibit cardiolipin synthetase at several concentrations. Other phospholipids tested for inhibitory effects, phosphatidyl-ethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidic acid were also shown to inhibit cardiolipin synthesis. Phosphatidic acid was considerably more inhibitory than cardiolipin, phosphatidylethanolamine was similar to cardiolipin, and phosphatidylinositol less inhibitory at the same concentrations. A non-phosphate-containing glycolipid was also inhibitory. In contrast, glycerophosphate had no effect on cardiolipin synthesis.     

Spectroscopic study of monosubstituted amides. II. Rotation isomers in amides substituted by aliphatic side-chain models

The influence of the substituents upon the Amide I and νNH frequencies has been analyzed for ten amides substituted by aliphatic side chains. By considering the aliphatic chain field effect, some data are obtained as to the conformation of the N? C_α bond. In two amides, the presence of an equilibrium between two conformers is shown and a semiquantitative estimation of the energies involved is obtained. The consequences for polypeptides conformation, especially for poly-L -valine, are discussed.     

Thyroglobulin biosynthesis in a larval (ammocoete) and adult freshwater lamprey (Lampetra planeri Bl.).

1. The biosynthesis of 18-19S thyroglobulin has been studied in a larval and adult freshwater lamprey (Lampetra planeri Bl.). 2. In vivo and in vitro experiments have been performed by injecting into the coelomic cavity or by incubating branchial region labeled constituents of Tg of higher vertebrates (125I, [3H]leucine and various [3H]carbohydrates). 3. Larvae (ammocoetes) and adults incorporate all labels into thyroglobulin (18-19S Tg), containing a small proportion of labeled T3 and T4, as identified by paper chromatography, and very minute amounts of stable iodine. 4. In adults, the biosynthesis of 18-19S Tg proceeds much more rapidly and the labels are incorporated in higher percentage than in larvae. 5. The demonstration of the biosynthesis of the specific thyroid protein, 18-19S Tg, in larvae indicates that the biochemical mechanism of hormonogenesis is present in larval endostyle before the morphological differentiation of thyroid cells and follicles occurring during metamorphosis. 6. Some 18-19S Tg is apparently stored in the endostyle.     

Body size increase in insular rodent populations: a role for predators?

Insular mammalian populations living in areas of small size are often characterized by a drastic change in body mass compared to related continental populations or species. Generally, small mammals (less than 100 g) evolve into giant forms while large mammals (up to 100 g) evolve into dwarf forms. These changes, coupled with changes in other life, behavioural, physiological or demographic traits are referred to generally as the insular syndrome. We tested in this study the relative contribution of three factors — area of island, numbers of competitor species and number of predator species — to changes in body size of the woodmouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Our results, based on a comparative analysis using the phylogenetic independent contrasts method, indicate that the increase in body size is related both to the decrease of island size and to the lower number of predator species. A decrease of competitor species does not seem to have an important effect.
