The entire mitochondrial genome was sequenced in a prostriate tick, Ixodes hexagonus, and a metastriate tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Both genomes encode 22 tRNAs, 13 proteins, and two ribosomal RNAs. Prostriate ticks are basal members of Ixodidae and have the same gene order as Limulus polyphemus. In contrast, in R. sanguineus, a block of genes encoding NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (ND1), tRNA(Leu)(UUR), tRNA(Leu)(CUN), 16S rDNA, tRNA(Val), 12S rDNA, the control region, and the tRNA(Ile) and tRNA(Gln) have translocated to a position between the tRNA(Glu) and tRNA(Phe) genes. The tRNA(Cys) gene has translocated between the control region and the tRNA(Met) gene, and the tRNA(Leu)(CUN) gene has translocated between the tRNA(Ser)(UCN) gene and the control region. Furthermore, the control region is duplicated, and both copies undergo concerted evolution. Primers that flank these rearrangements confirm that this gene order is conserved in all metastriate ticks examined. Correspondence analysis of amino acid and codon use in the two ticks and in nine other arthropod mitochondrial genomes indicate a strong bias in R. sanguineus towards amino acids encoded by AT-rich codons.   相似文献

Using the strictly neutral model as a null hypothesis, we tested for deviations from expected levels of nucleotide polymorphism at the alcohol dehydrogenase locus (Adh-1) within and among four species of pocket gophers (Geomys bursarius major, G. knoxjonesi, G. texensis llanensis, and G. attwateri). The complete protein-encoding region was examined, and 10 unique alleles, representing both electromorphic and cryptic alleles, were used to test hypotheses (e.g., the neutral model) concerning the maintenance of genetic variation. Nineteen variable sites were identified among the 10 alleles examined, including 9 segregating sites occurring in synonymous positions and 10 that were nonsynonymous. Several statistical methods, including those that test for within-species variation as well as those that examine variation within and among species, failed to reject the null hypothesis that variation (both within and between species of Geomys) at the Adh locus is consistent with the neutral theory. However, there was significant heterogeneity in the ratio of polymorphism to divergence across the gene, with polymorphisms clustered in the first half of the coding region and fixed differences clustered in the second half of the gene. Two alternative hypotheses are discussed as possible explanations for this heterogeneity: an old balanced polymorphism in the first half of the gene or a recent selective sweep in the second half of the gene.   相似文献

Two alternative “strategies” will not coexist in a population unless on average they are equally successful. The most likely way for such an equilibrium to be maintained is through something equivalent to frequency-dependent selection. Females of the digger wasp Sphex ichneumoneus (Sphecidae) nest in underground burrows. They usually dig and provision these by themselves but occasionally a nest is jointly occupied. The two wasps fight whenever they meet and in the end only one of the two females lays an egg in the shared nest. Two models based on the theory of mixed evolutionarily stable strategies were developed and tested on comprehensive field data from two North American populations of these wasps. The first model proposes two strategies called founding and joining. Founders start burrows alone, but they are more successful when they are joined by a joiner. At equilibrium founders and joiners are equally successful, which amounts to an amicable, sharing relationship. The predictions of this amicable model are decisively rejected by the data. The second model proposes two strategies called digging and entering. Diggers dig their own burrows but they often have to abandon these burrows because of temporary unsuitability. Enterers move in later, thereby exploiting abandoned burrows as a valuable resource. They do not distinguish an adandoned burrow from one that is still occupied. Therefore sharing of burrows arises as an unfortunate by product of selection for entering abandoned burrows, and Model 2 is not an amicable model. Its quantitative predictions are impressively fulfilled in one population, though not in another population. This is one of the only examples yet known of a mixed evolutionarily stable strategy in nature. Yet the word strategy itself can confuse, and this paper tries the experiment of substituting “decision”, defined as a moment at which the animal commits future time to a course of action.  相似文献

A systematic survey of six intergenic regions flanking the human HLA-B locus in eight haplotypes reveals the regions to be up to 20 times more polymorphic than the reported average degree of human neutral polymorphism. Furthermore, the extent of polymorphism is directly related to the proximity to the HLA-B locus. Apparently linkage to HLA-B locus alleles, which are under balancing selection, maintains the neutral polymorphism of adjacent regions. For these linked polymorphisms to persist, recombination in the 200-kb interval from HLA-B to TNF must occur at a low frequency. The high degree of polymorphism found distal to HLA-B suggests that recombination is uncommon on both sides of the HLA-B locus. The least-squares estimate is 0.15% per megabase with an estimated range from 0.02 to 0.54%. These findings place strong restrictions on possible recombinational mechanisms for the generation of diversity at the HLA-B.  相似文献

The subunit composition of different electrophoretic forms of canine C3 and C4 was determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of reduced immune precipitates. Canine C4 comprises alpha, beta, and gamma chains of approximate molecular weight 90 000–95 000, 72 000, and 33 000, respectively. The molecular weight of the alpha chain of the C4 1 allelic product was approximately 95 000, but 90 000 for the C4 2 and C4 4 allotypes. No differences were observed in the molecular weights of the beta or gamma chains of any canine C4 phenotype tested. Canine C3 appears to be encoded by a single locus. The subunit composition comprises an alpha and beta chain with molecular weights of approximately 106 000 and 71000, respectively. Unlike C4, no differences in the molecular weights of the subunits were observed in different electrophoretic forms of canine C3.  相似文献

We have identified numerous Ancestral Haplotypes encoding a 14-Mb region of Bota C19. Three are frequent in Simmental, Angus and Wagyu and have been conserved since common progenitor populations. Others are more relevant to the differences between these 3 breeds including fat content and distribution in muscle. SREBF1 and Growth Hormone, which have been implicated in the production of healthy beef, are included within these haplotypes. However, we conclude that alleles at these 2 loci are less important than other sequences within the haplotypes. Identification of breeds and hybrids is improved by using haplotypes rather than individual alleles.  相似文献
