In this paper, we construct a novel nonlocal transport model that describes the evolution of microtubules (MTs) as they interact with stationary distributions of motor proteins. An advection term accounts for directed MT transport (sliding due to motor protein action), and an integral term accounts for reorientation of MTs due to their interactions with cross-linking motor proteins. Simulations of our model show how MT patterns depend on boundary constraints, as well as model parameters that represent motor speed, cross-linking capability (motor activity), and directionality. In large domains, and using motor parameter values consistent with experimentally-derived values, we find that patterns such as asters, vortices, and bundles are able to persist. In vivo, MTs take on aster patterns during interphase and they form bundles in neurons and polarized epithelial cells. Vortex patterns have not been observed in vivo, however, are found in in vitro experiments. In constrained domains, we find that similar patterns form (asters, bundles, and vortices). However, we also find that when two opposing motors are present, anti-parallel bundles are able to form, resembling the mitotic spindle during cell division. This model demonstrates how MT sliding and MT reorientation are sufficient to produce experimentally observed patterns.  相似文献

Many years of uncontrolled discharge of sewage and industrial effluent have resulted in serious contamination of much of the sediments underlying inland and nearshore coastal waters in Hong Kong by potentially toxic heavy metal and trace organic pollutants. Much has been achieved to improve control of this pollution at the source and prevent further deterioration. Nevertheless, comprehensive environmental assessment and management measures are required to ensure that any unacceptably contaminated sediment that must be dredged to facilitate infrastructural development is safely handled and disposed of. It is estimated that some 50?Mm3 of sediment classified as unacceptably contaminated may require dredging and special management elsewhere over the coming 10-year period. To facilitate improved decision making about the most appropriate disposal options for dredged sediment Hong Kong has recently implemented a new sediment quality assessment framework under which information on the biological activity of contaminated material is considered in addition to data on chemical composition. Dredged sediment classified as unacceptably contaminated has been disposed of at a contained disposal facility at East Sha Chau since 1992. To date over 20?Mm3 of sediment has been placed into seabed pits that are subsequently capped with clay. The site is subject to a rigorous monitoring programme that has clearly demonstrated its environmental acceptability.  相似文献

Corynebacterium parvum strain 10390 is an antitumor agent and stimulant of the reticuloendothelial system and produces a soluble antigen towards the end of its growth cycle. This material, which is a cell wall component and can also be released from the organism by acid or alkaline hydrolysis, has been purified. It is an acidic polysaccharide of molecular weight 100,000 to 150,000 and contains galactose, glucose, fucose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, uronic acids, sialic acids, and a small proportion of amino acids. The antigen gives a precipitin reaction with antisera raised against the whole organism and also binds to animal cells. The antigenic determinants are extremely resistant to oxidation, reduction, and enzymatic and chemical hydrolysis, but the single cell-binding site is destroyed by alkali and also by Helix pomatia digestive juice, alginase, and neuraminidase without substantially affecting the molecular weight. This site is inaccessible until the molecule is released from the cell surface. The possibility that the soluble antigen is the biologically active fraction of C. parvum is discussed.  相似文献

Siphonous plants represent an alternate scheme to the way most macroscopic plants are constructed. They are single, often large (1–2 m), sometimes morphologically complex, multinucleate (coenocytic) cells where the whole of the cytoplasm is a continuum. Caulerpa mexicana Sond. ex Kütz. is a siphonous tropical marine green alga characterized by four morphologically distinct regions and, as with other members of the genus, by the presence of a dense network of anastomosing cylindrical cell wall in growths called trabeculae. Based on the results of this study, we propose several roles for trabeculae: (i) They are structural components, which likely add some small amount of support in compression but add considerable strength in tension. (ii) As extensions of the cell wall and plasma membrane, they act as diffusion channels from the cell exterior to the interior cytoplasm. It is possible that trabeculae also play a role in determining cell shape through developmental positioning and placement patterns, thus facilitating the diverse shapes found in the morphologically distinct regions of Caulerpa sp.  相似文献

The effect of spontaneous changes in high or low voltage electrocortical activity, in the absence of uterine contractions, on the regional distribution of blood flow was studied in normoxic unanaesthetized fetal sheep at 124-134 days gestation in utero, using the isotope-labelled microsphere method. On transition from high to low voltage there was a significant fall in arterial pressure (7%) and an increase in flow (19-38%) to areas of the brain corresponding to the arborization of the reticular formation, i.e. excluding the cerebrum and cerebellum. Blood flow to the gastro-intestinal tract, pancreas and liver (portal vein) also increased.  相似文献
