Abstract: Schwannoma-derived growth factor (SDGF) is a potent mitogen and neuronal differentiation factor. Because of its relationship to epidermal growth factor (EGF) and the heregulins, it was asked if SDGF interacts with the EGF receptor or HER2/neu.  Fire regimes have three inter-related components that can affect population dynamics: frequency, intensity and season. However, there has been little effort to study the effects of any of these components on arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM). In order to examine the long-term effects of fire frequency on AM colonization, the roots of Dillwynia retorta were examined at 32 sites supporting Hawkesbury Sandstone vegetation in the Sydney region of southeastern Australia. These sites were representative of the broad-scale variability in fire frequencies with respect to the length and timing of inter-fire intervals found in the Sydney region during the previous 30 years. The length of the shortest inter-fire interval was significantly correlated with total AM colonization, and the length of the longest inter-fire interval was related to the arbuscular colonization. The length of the most-recent inter-fire interval and the time since the shortest inter-fire interval were not related to AM colonization in D. retorta. Furthermore, AM colonization was directly related to the local abundance of the host plant, indicating that the effects of fire frequency on AM colonization are likely to occur indirectly via direct effects on the host plant. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that the presence and abundance of alternate potential hosts had no influence on mycotrophy in D. retorta. Thus, the impact of fire on D. retorta was probably the main factor influencing its mycorrhizal status in relation to fire history. Accepted: 16 October 1998  相似文献

Little work has been carried out on the sperm recognition systems present on the egg plasma membrane. Here it is shown that wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) interferes with the sperm-interacting system on the plasma membrane of eggs of the ascidian, Ascidia ceratodes. The WGA activates the dechorionated egg, indicating that a plasma membrane sugar residue can be directly tied to egg activation. Low concentrations of this lectin do not activate the eggs, but reduce fertilizability. This observation suggests that the WGA binding site might be part of a sperm reception–activation complex in the plasma membrane. While WGA also affects sperm binding to the chorion, the mechanisms of sperm interaction at the plasma membrane and chorion show different sensitivities to lectins, sugars and enzymes.  相似文献

A soil isolate of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii was marked with a lux CDABE gene cassette to enable the expression of bioluminescence. The suitability of the bacterium as a soil pollution biosensor was assessed using acute and chronic assays. Bacterial bioluminescence responded sensitively to the metals studied. The order of sensitivity was found to be Cd > Ni = Zn > Cu for the acute test and Cd > Ni = Zn = Cu for the chronic test. The sensitive response of the biosensor highlighted its potential for use as an indicator of soil pollution.  相似文献

Summary Conditional lethality in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., occurred in F2 plants when cytoplasmicchlorophyll mutant Genetic Type T275 was the female parent and when either nuclear mutants T253 or T323 plants were the male parents. Mutant T253 [Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2] is missing two of three mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase isozymes [Mdh1-n (Urbana)] and has yellowish-green leaves [y20 (Urbana)] and a tan-saddle pattern seed coat (k2). Mutant T323 [Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2)] also is missing two of three mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase isozymes [Mdh1-n (Ames 2)] and has yellowishgreen leaves [y20 (Ames 2)], but has yellow seed coat (K2). Mutants T275, T253, and T323 are viable both in the field and glasshouse. The genotypes cyt-Y2 Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2/Mdh1-n (Urbana) y20 (Urbana) k2 and cyt-Y2 Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2)/Mdh1-n (Ames 2) y20 (Ames 2) are conditional lethals. These genotypes are lethal under field conditions, but plants survive in reduced light under shadecloth in the glasshouse. We do not know if their interaction with cyt-Y2 is due to Mdh1-n, y20, or Mdh1-n y20. The reciprocal cross (cyt-Y2 as male parent) gives viable genotypes. These conditional lethal genotypes should be useful for studies on the interaction between organelle and nuclear genomes.This is journal paper no. With countless “natural” experiments triggered by the COVID-19-associated physical distancing, one key question comes from chronobiology: “When confined to homes, how does the reduced exposure to natural daylight arising from the interruption of usual outdoor activities plus lost temporal organization ordinarily provided from workplaces and schools affect the circadian timing system (the internal 24 h clock) and, consequently, health of children and adults of all ages?” Herein, we discuss some ethical and scientific facets of exploring such natural experiments by offering a hypothetical case study of circadian biology.  相似文献

Summary Myocardial cell culture methods are now well established for animal and fetal human tissue. We present here a method for harvesting and culturing adult human atrial myocardiocytes. Cells are obtained from fresh atrial tissue normally discarded after being removed to cannulate the right atrium during open heart surgery. The atrial tissue is minced and then digested using collagenase. The single cell suspension is initially cultured in serum-containing growth medium, then transferred to defined medium, selective for myocardial cell growth. The cells are characterized by immunoperoxidase stains and transmission electron microscopy. The cultured cells stain positive for myoglobin, whereas control cultured fibroblasts and endothelial cells do not. Electron microscopy shows the presence of numerous myofibrils, Z-bodies, pleomorphic mitochondria, and secretory granules. The chronological age of the donor was an important factor in culturing the adult tissue, the younger tissue correlated with a higher success rate. This method provides a means for in vitro study of human adult myocardial cells and provides guidelines for appropriate atrial tissue to use.  相似文献
