The examination of whole mounts prepared for transmission electron microscopy has resulted in the finding of thirteen taxa of nanoplanktonic coccolithophorids from the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. The material was collected as part of the AMERIEZ programme, March 1986. Cold-water adapted nanoplanktonic coccolithophorids have previously been shown to constitute a recurrent plankton element at subarctic and arctic localities. Three of the Weddell Sea species, Wigwamma annulifera, W. arctica , and Papposphaera sagittifera , are conspecific with northern hemisphere material, while two species, Calciarcus alaskensis and Turrisphaera arctica , are possibly identical with previously described arctidsubarctic material. Six taxa new to science have been described from the Weddell Sea, Wigwamma antarctica, W. triradiata, Trigonaspis melvillea, Pappomonas weddellensis, Papposphaera obpyramidalis , and P. simplicissima . The cooccurrence of identical forms at the two poles, and the fact that the species described are allocated to "arctic" genera, indicate a geologically relatively recent exchange of biological material between the poles. 相似文献

The ontogeny of strombid behavior was studied by observing thebehavior of Strombus maculatus veligers collected from the planktonand reared past metamorphosis to adults, and by observing juvenilestrombids collected in the field. Complete adult modal actionpatterns (MAP's) associated with locomotion, feeding, and rightingof overturned shells are performed by S. maculatus juvenilesimmediately after metamorphosis. There are changes in the frequencyof the use of certain MAP's which are associated with variationsin shell shape and size. The unique strombid escape response to molluscivorous gastropods(Conns spp.) is not released until juvenile S. maculatus arethree weeks past metamorphosis and two millimeters in shelllength. At that stage, the complete response is released uponthe first encounter with a predator. Experience with a predatordoes not seem to lower the age or size criteria. During ontogeny there is a trend toward an increasing complexityof behavior which is paralleled by an increasing complexityof neural structure and general morphology. There are majorsteps in the ontogeny of strombid behavior which probably coincidewith neural and morphological stages. 相似文献

The objective of these studies was to determine if prolactin, known to induce its own receptors, alters the prostaglandin (PG) synthesis which could, in turn, modify the fluidity of the membrane and thus alter the functionality of prolactin receptors. Adult male C3H mice were injected subcutaneously with 100 μg of oPRL every 4 h for 0, 24 or 48 h and sacrificed 8 h after receiving the last injection. Liver 100,000 × membrane pellets were used in the measurement of these parameters. The amount of binding of prolactin to these membranes increased with the duration of injections, the values being 179 and 244% of control values after 24 and 48 h of injections, respectively. The amounts of PGF2α and PGE synthesized also increased after these injections, the values being 127 and 270% of control for PGF2α and 634 and 695% of control values for PGE after 24 and 48 h of injections, respectively. Fluorescence polarization, an index of microviscosity, was decreased by 14 and 20% after 24 and 48 h of PRL administration, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated simultaneous in vitro effects of prostaglandin on both prolactin receptors and membrane fluidity. The current data are in agreement with those observations and suggest that prolactin may modulate its own receptor by increasing the fluidity of the membrane in which it exists by alterations within the PG cascade. Such biochemical changes may then modify existing restraints and allow the hormone receptor to assume a more functional configuration. 相似文献
