Female tree crickets (Oecanthus nigricornis) prefer large malesbut do not receive larger glandular courtship gifts from thesemales. This finding is puzzling from both the male and femaleperspectives, because females should prefer males providingmore direct benefits, and because males who provide larger giftsachieve higher insemination success. We tested for differencesin the quality of male secretions and found that larger malesprovided more proteinaceous food gifts than did rivals, whichcould explain why they are preferred by females. The preferencein turn could cause depletion of food gift reserves in favoredmales, because natural remating rates are high and because evena single feeding bout negatively affects glandular stores. Mostintriguingly, we showed that preferred males can adaptivelydecrease the size of courtship food-gifts provided (in orderto conserve gifts for future mating events) when they perceivethat the probability of multiple future mating opportunitiesis high. Thus, the elevated mating rates of preferred males(both before and after a focal mating event) could account forthe small size of their courtship food-gifts.  相似文献

Ampullae of Lorenzini were examined from juvenile Carcharhinus leucas (831–1,045 mm total length) captured from freshwater regions of the Brisbane River. The ampullary organ structure differs from all other previously described ampullae in the canal wall structure, the general shape of the ampullary canal, and the apically nucleated supportive cells. Ampullary pores of 140–205 µm in diameter are distributed over the surface of the head region with 2,681 and 2,913 pores present in two sharks that were studied in detail. The primary variation of the ampullary organs appears in the canal epithelial cells which occur as either flattened squamous epithelial cells or a second form of pseudostratified contour‐ridged epithelial cells; both cell types appear to release material into the ampullary lumen. Secondarily, this ampullary canal varies due to involuted walls that form a clover‐like canal wall structure. At the proximal end of the canal, contour‐ridged cells abut a narrow region of cuboidal epithelial cells that verge on the constant, six alveolar sacs of the ampulla. The alveolar sacs contain numerous receptor and supportive cells bound by tight junctions and desmosomes. Pear‐shaped receptor cells that possess a single apical kinocilium are connected basally by unmyelinated neural boutons. Opposed to previously described ampullae of Lorenzini, the supportive cells have an apical nucleus, possess a low number of microvilli, and form a unique, jagged alveolar wall. A major challenge facing current mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics research is the large concentration range displayed in biological systems, which far exceeds the dynamic range of commonly available mass spectrometers. One approach to overcome this limitation is to improve online reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) separation methodologies. LC mobile-phase modifiers are used to improve peak shape and increase sample load tolerance. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a commonly used mobile-phase modifier, as it produces peptide separations that are far superior to other additives. However, TFA leads to signal suppression when incorporated with electrospray ionization (ESI), and thus, other modifiers, such as formic acid (FA), are used for LC-MS applications. FA exhibits significantly less signal suppression, but is not as effective of a modifier as TFA. An alternative mobile-phase modifier is the combination of FA and ammonium formate (AF), which has been shown to improve peptide separations. The ESI-MS compatibility of this modifier has not been investigated, particularly for proteomic applications. This work compares the separation metrics of mobile phases modified with FA and FA/AF and explores the use of FA/AF for the LC-MS analysis of tryptic digests. Standard tryptic-digest peptides were used for comparative analysis of peak capacity and sample load tolerance. The compatibility of FA/AF in proteomic applications was examined with the analysis of soluble proteins from canine prostate carcinoma tissue. Overall, the use of FA/AF improved online RP-LC separations and led to significant increases in peptide identifications with improved protein sequence coverage.  相似文献

Female tettigoniids have a refractory period after mating duringwhich they are sexually unreceptive. Because females obtainvaluable nutrients as well as sperm at mating, there is likelyto be sexual conflict over the duration of the refractory period;females should accrue male donations, whereas males should preventtheir mates from accepting additional matings. We examined theeffects of ampulla attachment duration and female diet on theinduction of the refractory period of a zaprochiline tettigoniid.We find that, although the relationship between ampulla attachmentduration and duration of the refractory period holds for femalesmaintained on a high-pollen diet, poorly nourished females onlyshow the typical onset of the refractory period when allowedto consume the spermatophylax. These results suggest that femaleinterests may have a greater influence in determining the outcomeof sexual conflict. Under some circumstances spermatophylaxfeeding may compensate for poor female nutrition leading tothe typical refractory period. Sexual conflict over the rematinginterval could be instrumental in generating larger nutrientinvestments by male tettigoniids. [Behav Ecol 1991;2:276–282]  相似文献

Synopsis The impacts of sewage disposal on the demersal fish community were identified after approximately 2 years of operation of a deepwater outfall off Sydney, NSW Australia. Gut-content analyses were used as a basis for identifying groups of fish with dietary similarities. Similar results from multivariate analyses (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity measure and MDS) identified 8 trophically-similar groups of fish. The majority of the fish comprising these groups consumed organisms in the soft-bottom community. Only 5 of the 8 trophic groups identified could be analysed in detail as individuals comprising the remaining groups were not caught in sufficient numbers near the outfall. Asymmetrical analyses of variance showed that the numbers of individuals and species in one particular trophic group increased significantly following the commissioning of the Bondi deepwater outfall. However, the proportional representation of individuals in the 5 trophic groups examined did not change. Five hypotheses are advanced to account for the observed impacts. Of these, hypotheses centred around increased habitat complexity and a numerical response to increases in prey abundance warrant further investigation. Directions of future research and the limitations of various designs to assess environmental impacts are discussed in light of these results.  相似文献

It has been previously shown that mild trypsinization of Chlamydomonas gametes reversibly inhibits steps of the mating process. Gametic agglutination is delayed 30–60 min, while cell wall hydrolysis and zygote formation are delayed 1–3 h. If gametes are pretreated with 5 μg/ml tunicamycin (TM) for 1 h and then trypsinized, the recovery of agglutination is blocked. These results indicate that N-glycosylated glycoproteins are involved in agglutination. Treatment of normal gametes with tunicamycin alone does not have a significant effect on agglutination and mating efficiency, suggesting that there is little or no turnover of the surface receptors before mating. Tunicamycin also interferes with cell growth and prevents the conversion of vegetative cells into gametes.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships of the brachyuran crab superfamily Eriphioidea, commonly known as stone or rubble crabs, are examined. Analysis of three mitochondrial (12S, 16S and COI) and two nuclear loci (18S and Histone 3) was carried out for 51 taxa representing the Carpilioidea, Dairoidea, Eriphioidea, Goneplacoidea, Parthenopoidea, Pilumnoidea, Portunoidea, Pseudozioidea and Xanthoidea. Phylogenetic analyses of molecular data used three methods of inference that recovered similar topologies with minor differences. Maximum parsimony analysis of 20 morphological characters taken from first zoeas of 11 species yielded two equally parsimonious trees and generally supported the molecular analyses. None of the analyses recovered Eriphioidea as monophyletic, and each of the eriphioid families represented by two or more taxa was shown to be polyphyletic in both molecular and larval analyses. This study indicates that the present classification based on adult morphology is incongruent with phylogenetic relationships and that the diagnostic characters the result of convergence (particularly in feeding morphology) rather than shared ancestry.  相似文献
