We used nuclear and mitochondrial genes to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for the Palearctic–Oriental starlings and mynas (genera Sturnus , Acridotheres , Leucopsar , Creatophora and Fregilupus : Sturnidae). Our results indicate that the group has undergone a rapid diversification in Asia since the late Miocene. A reassessment of the morphological and ecological characters used in previous taxonomic revisions shows that all characters are highly homoplastic. We suggest that the elevated morphological and ecological plasticity favoured the adaptation of starlings and mynas to the local environment, the exploitation of all niches and their successful radiation in south-east Asia. Under the current limits the genera Sturnus and Acridotheres are not monophyletic, and we propose a revised phylogenetic taxonomy for the entire clade. We confirm that the extinct Fregilupus varius is a starling and it colonized Réunion Island (Mascarenes) by transoceanic dispersal from Asia. 相似文献

Previous investigations, performed on isolated rat atria, showed that the lipophylic spin-trapping agent N-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylnitrone (PBN) is able to prevent the acute cardiotoxic effects produced by doxorubicin (DXR), whereas the hydrophylic compound 5,5-dimethyl-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) is inactive. The present study was designed to ascertain whether differences in the pharmacological effects of the two spin traps are related to their different subcellular distribution. Langendorff rat hearts were perfused for 60 minutes with [I4C]-DXR and either PBN or DMPO. The subcellular mapping of the three compounds was performed by measuring DXR by liquid scintillation counting, PBN by GC/MS, and DMPO by HPLC in the following isolated fractions: nuclei, mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, sarcolemma, cytosol. DMPO was shown to accumulate in the cytosolic compartment; both PBM and DXR are taken up by nuclei and mitochondria, while only trace amounts of DXR were detected in the sarcoplasmic reticulum. These results suggest that mitochondrial (and not sarcoplasmic) enzymes are mainly involved in DXR-induced free radical production, which is thought to cause the acute cardiotoxic effects of DXR. An involvement of DXR-induced free radical generation in the nuclear compartment seems unlikely in the short-term “in vitro” effects observed with the experimental model adopted for these studies, although it may play a role in the delayed pathology. 相似文献

(+)-Cyclazosin [(+)-1] is one of most selective antagonists of the α1B-adrenoceptor subtype (selectivity ratios, α1B/α1A?=?13, α1B/α1D?=?38–39). To improve the selectivity, we synthesized and pharmacologically studied the blocking activity against α1-adrenoceptors of several homochiral analogues of (+)-cyclazosin featuring different substituents on the carbonyl or amine groups, namely (?)-2, (+)-3, (?)-4–(?)-8, (+)-9. Moreover, we studied the activity of some their opposite enantiomers, namely (?)-1, (?)-3, (+)-6, and (?)-9, to evaluate the influence of stereochemistry on selectivity. The benzyloxycarbonyl and methyl (4aS,8aR) analogues (+)-3 and (?)-6 improved in a significant way the α1B selectivity of the progenitor compound: 4 and 14 time vs. the α1D subtype and 35 and 77 times vs. the α1A subtype, respectively. The study confirmed the importance of the hydrophobic cis-octahydroquinoxaline moiety of these molecules for the establishment of interactions with the α1-adrenoceptors as well that of their (4aS,8aR) stereochemistry to grant selectivity for the α1B subtype. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Two of the most ubiquitous fatigue countermeasures used by shift-working nurses are napping and caffeine. This mixed-methods case study investigated the ways nurses and midwives utilised napping and caffeine countermeasures to cope with shift work, and associated sleep, physical health and psychological health outcomes.Materials and Methods: N = 130 Australian shift-working nurses and midwives (mean age = 44 years, range = 21–67, 115F, 15M) completed the Standard Shiftwork Index. A sub-set of 22 nurses and midwives completed an in-depth interview.Results: Nearly 70% of participants reported napping. Those who napped during night shifts had significantly less total sleep time before (F2,75 = 5.5, p < 0.01) and between days off (F2,82 = 3.9, p < 0.05). By the end of the night shift, average hours of time awake were significantly less for prophylactic and on-shift nappers compared to non-nappers (F2,85 = 97.2, p < 0.001). Since starting shift work, the percentage of high caffeine consumers (>400 mg/day) increased from 15% to 33% of the sample and an average of 4 (SD = 2) caffeinated beverages per day was reported. Increased caffeine consumption was associated with greater sleep disturbance (r = 0.26, p < 0.05), psychological distress (r = 0.37, p < 0.001), abdomen pain (r = 0.27, p < 0.05) and weight gain since starting shift work (r = 0.25, p < 0.05). Interviews confirmed these relationships and revealed that caffeine consumption on night shift was common, whereas napping on night shift was dependent on a number of factors including ability to sleep during the day.Conclusion: This study identified reasons shift workers chose to engage in or abstain from napping and consuming caffeine, and how these strategies related to poor sleep and health outcomes. Further research is required to help develop recommendations for shift workers regarding napping and caffeine consumption as fatigue countermeasures, whilst taking into account the associated hazards of each strategy. 相似文献

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)‐conjugated polymers are a versatile class of semiconductors for application in organic solar cells because of their tunable optoelectronic properties. A record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.4% was recently achieved for DPP polymers, but further improvements are required to reach true efficiency limits. Using five DPP polymers with different chemical structures and molecular weights, the device performance of polymer:fullerene solar cells is systematically optimized by considering device polarity, morphology, and light absorption. The polymer solubility is found to have a significant effect on the optimal device polarity. Soluble polymers show a 10–25% increase in PCE in inverted device configurations, while the device performance is independent of device polarity for less soluble DPP derivatives. The difference seems related to the polymer to fullerene weight ratio at the ZnO interface in inverted devices, which is higher for more soluble DPP polymers. Optimization of the nature of the cosolvent to narrow the fibril width of polymers in the blends toward the exciton diffusion length enhances charge generation. Additionally, the use of a retroreflective foil increases absorption of light. Combined, the effects afford a PCE of 9.6%, among the highest for DPP‐based polymer solar cells. 相似文献

This study analyzed the occurrence of selected facial expressions, gestures, and postures, in relation to sex and rank of
sender and receiver, context, and responses elicited in a large multi-male multi-female group of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) living in captivity. The group was observed for 100 hr during the mating and the birth season. Data were collected with
the behavior sampling method. The bared-teeth display and the hindquarter presentation were the most prominent signals in
the rhesus submissive and affiliative repertoire. Both signals were primarily displayed in response to aggression and approaches;
bared-teeth in response to approaches from the front, presentation in response to approaches from the rear. Lip-smack had
a submissive component like baredteeth and presentation but was more likely to be displayed by approaching individuals and
followed by affiliation than these behaviors. The distribution of hip-touch and mount was different from that of bared-teeth,
presentation, and lip-smack, these behaviors mostly occurring between males, irrespective of their dominance rank. Other infrequent

Various conventional methods to estimate the mean and median power spectral frequencies, and amplitude of the surface electromyogram during 30-90 min, cyclic, force-varying, constant-posture contractions were cross-compared in an experimental trial. The aim was to determine the most appropriate algorithm implementations and reduce the total number of algorithms that need to be considered when monitoring time trends. Subjects produced hand-grip contractions in a repeated intermittent pattern until exhaustion. For all estimated parameters: analysis of contraction levels below 25% maximum voluntary contraction produced poor estimates due to high relative measurement noise; parameter reproducibility was best when comparisons were aligned to the actual force produced rather than the target force and when the biomechanics of the contraction were more consistent; and estimates were not greatly influenced by the rate of change of the force trajectory. For frequency parameters: estimates based on the short-time Fourier transform were similar to those based on time-varying autoregressive methods; longer duration analysis windows exhibited better repeatability; and simple frequency-domain noise filters were not effective in reducing the impact of measurement noise. For amplitude estimates: whitening reduced the variance of the amplitude estimate; and the best analysis window duration was a trade-off between bias (decreased with a short duration window) and variance (decreased with a long duration window). 相似文献
