Effect of Zeitgeber Intensity Reduction on a Simulated Dual-Oscillator Human Circadian System: Classical and Dynamic Analysis

The two-oscillator model of human circadian rhythmicity was analyzed when a zeitgeber relative intensity of 1, 0.5, or 0.1 was introduced into the equations. Fourier analysis was compared with dynamic analysis such as attractor reconstruction or Liapunov exponent calculation. After a 50 or 90% reduction in zeitgeber intensity, the dynamics of the system became equivalent and differed significantly from those of a system with maximal zeitgeber intensity. When 10% aleatory noise was added to the data, the analysis was still applicable, and the results obtained were essentially the same as in the absence of noise. Dynamic analysis could thus provide a distinct classification for periodic data, based on the type of analysis.     

Theophylline delays human sleep phase

Twelve healthy male volunteers were given theophylline 250 mg in order to test effects on 24-hr rhythms. Rhythms of sleep/wake and subjective sleepiness were delayed. Ingestion of xanthines such as theophylline in coffee, tea, colas and chocolate may contribute to some sleep disorders. Theophylline might likewise be useful in treating disorders of circadian oscillators.     

Primary and secondary critical ischemia times of myocutaneous flaps

The primary critical ischemia time of the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap model was determined in the pig. Latissimus dorsi flaps were subjected to a primary ischemic insult of 2 hours (mimicking the ischemic event of free-tissue transfer). Following 12 hours of normal flow, the flaps were subjected to a second ischemic insult ranging from 0 to 12 hours. The secondary critical ischemia time (11.3 hours) was found to be statistically comparable to the primary critical ischemia time (9.1 hours). Questions are raised concerning the mechanism of action of this phenomenon and its clinical relevance.     

Bifurcating periodic solutions for a class of age-structured predator-prey systems

A system of mixed integrodifferential and partial differential equations for an agestructured predator-prey system is studied here. The predator eats all ages of prey, but more of the very young and very old than of the intermediate ages. The existence of periodic solutions corresponding to stable coexistence is proved for a suitable range of parameters by bifurcation theory.     

New Diagnostic System for the Identification of Lactose-fermenting Gram-negative Rods

The identification of prompt lactose-fermenting gram-negative rods has generally relied heavily upon colonial morphology coupled with one or more indole, methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, citrate (IMViC) parameters, hydrogen sulfide, and motility. Studies were undertaken to compare diagnoses dependent solely upon the more orthodox criteria to a system for identification based upon hydrogen sulfide, ornithine decarboxylase, and citrate utilization (HOC). The results suggest that the IMViC scheme of identification is neither consistent nor applicable when applied to the current nomenclature of the above group of organisms and should be discarded, whereas the HOC system may prove to be of significant value to clinical microbiologists.
