Because mating entails both costs and potential benefits to both sexes, males and females should be under selection to make optimal choices from among available potential mates. For example, in some cases, individuals may benefit by using information on potential mates' previous sexual histories to make mate choices. In such cases, the form and direction of these benefits may vary both between the sexes and based on the sexual history of the choosing individuals themselves. We investigated the effects of recent previous sexual history on the mate choice and mating behavior of both males and females of the crayfish Orconectes limosus. In one experiment, we found that opposite‐sex dyads comprising crayfish that had both mated 7–8 d previously with other conspecifics were significantly less likely to mate than dyads in which at least one crayfish was unmated. In a second experiment, we found that, when presented with a choice of tethered (but free to move) opposite‐sex conspecifics, only virgin females discriminated between males based on sexual history, showing a preference for virgin males over recently mated males. Mated females, mated males, and virgin males showed no preferences based on the sexual histories of potential mates. We discuss the implications of these inferences in the context of what was previously known about mating behavior and potential sperm limitation in crustaceans and other taxa.  相似文献

Objective

The first aim was to investigate specific signature patterns of metabolites that are significantly altered in first-trimester serum of women who subsequently developed preeclampsia (PE) compared to healthy pregnancies. The second aim of this study was to examine the predictive performance of the selected metabolites for both early onset [EO-PE] and late onset PE [LO-PE].

Methods

This was a case-control study of maternal serum samples collected between 8+0 and 13+6 weeks of gestation from 167 women who subsequently developed EO-PE n = 68; LO-PE n = 99 and 500 controls with uncomplicated pregnancies. Metabolomics profiling analysis was performed using two methods. One has been optimized to target eicosanoids/oxylipins, which are known inflammation markers and the other targets compounds containing a primary or secondary biogenic amine group. Logistic regression analyses were performed to predict the development of PE using metabolites alone and in combination with first trimester mean arterial pressure (MAP) measurements.

Results

Two metabolites were significantly different between EO-PE and controls (taurine and asparagine) and one in case of LO-PE (glycylglycine). Taurine appeared the most discriminative biomarker and in combination with MAP predicted EO-PE with a detection rate (DR) of 55%, at a false-positive rate (FPR) of 10%.

Conclusion

Our findings suggest a potential role of taurine in both PE pathophysiology and first trimester screening for EO-PE.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Success of invasive plant species is thought to be linked with their higher leaf carbon fixation strategy, enabling them to capture and utilize resources better than native species, and thus pre-empt and maintain space. However, these traits are not well-defined for invasive woody vines.

Methods

In a glass house setting, experiments were conducted to examine how leaf carbon gain strategies differ between non-indigenous invasive and native woody vines of south-eastern Australia, by investigating their biomass gain, leaf structural, nutrient and physiological traits under changing light and moisture regimes.

Key Results

Leaf construction cost (CC), calorific value and carbon : nitrogen (C : N) ratio were lower in the invasive group, while ash content, N, maximum photosynthesis, light-use efficiency, photosynthetic energy-use efficiency (PEUE) and specific leaf area (SLA) were higher in this group relative to the native group. Trait plasticity, relative growth rate (RGR), photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency and water-use efficiency did not differ significantly between the groups. However, across light resource, regression analyses indicated that at a common (same) leaf CC and PEUE, a higher biomass RGR resulted for the invasive group; also at a common SLA, a lower CC but higher N resulted for the invasive group. Overall, trait co-ordination (using pair-wise correlation analyses) was better in the invasive group. Ordination using 16 leaf traits indicated that the major axis of invasive-native dichotomy is primarily driven by SLA and CC (including its components and/or derivative of PEUE) and was significantly linked with RGR.

Conclusions

These results demonstrated that while not all measures of leaf resource traits may differ between the two groups, the higher level of trait correlation and higher revenue returned (RGR) per unit of major resource need (CC) and use (PEUE) in the invasive group is in line with their rapid spread where introduced.  相似文献

Unilateral injection of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (DHT) into the rat neostriatum markedly reduced not only striatal tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) activity but also striatal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity and dopamine (DA) concentration measured 10--15 days later. The decrease in striatal TH activity was dose related over the range of 8--32 micrograms of DHT; a dose of 16 micrograms reduced striatal TH activity to 40--50% of control, DA concentration to 38% of control, and TPH activity to 5--20% of control. Intrastriatal injection of 16 micrograms of DHT reduced TH activity in the ipsilateral substantia nigra to 51% of control. Pretreatment with amfonelic acid, a potent DA uptake inhibitor, significantly reduced the effect of DHT on striatal and nigral TH activity and striatal DA concentration without affecting the DHT-induced decrease in striatal TPH activity. Desmethylimipramine (5 and 25 mg/kg) had no effect on the DHT-induced decrease in striatal TH activity. Striatal choline acetyltransferase and glutamic acid decarboxylase activities were not decreased by 16 micrograms of DHT. The results indicate that DHT can alter dopaminergic function in the rat neostriatum through a direct effect of the drug on DA neurons.  相似文献

The small poplar longhorn beetle, Saperda populnea is an important pest of Lombardy poplars (Populus nigra L.) in Turkey. A survey for natural entomopathogenic fungi of S. populnea larvae was made in Erzurum, Turkey, during the period 2004–2005. Larvae (13.5%) infected with a strain of the fungus Beauveria bassiana were found. The pathogenicity of B. bassiana strain 46 was conducted with different concentrations of conidia (106, 107 and 108 conidia/ml) of this isolate on S. populnea larvae. The lowest concentration (106 conidia/ml) caused about 56% mortality within 6 days. One hundred percent mortality was achieved after median lethal time (LT50) of 4.6 and 4.4 days for 107 and 108 conidia/ml, respectively. There were no significant differences between median lethal times. This is the first record of natural infection of S. populnea larvae by B. bassiana.  相似文献

A conformational quantum-mechanical study of (Gly-Phe-Pro) and (Gly-Pro-Phe) repeating tripeptide sequences has been carried out with the PCILO method. Using appropriate molecules as a model, we investigated the conformational possibilities of each in situ residue. Computations have been done taking into account the two typical pyrrolidine ring puckering and the most favorable orientations of the phenylalanyl side chain. Major conclusions drawn from this study are that the phenylalanyl can be accommodated at both second and third positions in the sequence without preventing the formation of triple-helix conformation. However, the analogy observed between the rotational possibilities around the second residue of Gly-Pro-Pro and Gly-Phe-Pro indicates that phenylalanyl in the second position favors the triple-helix formation.  相似文献

Boundaries between American Castanea species (Castanea dentata, the American chestnut and C. pumila var. pumila, the Allegheny chinkapin, and var. ozarkensis, the Ozark chinkapin) have been difficult to establish because of intraspecific variation, interspecific similarities and the incidence of chestnut blight, which has prevented trees from maturing. In this study, informative chloroplast (cp) DNA and nuclear sequences from Castanea taxa were analyzed to gain a better understanding of their phylogeography in North America. Our emphasis has been on the most southern Castanea population in the Appalachian region, known for its morphological diversity. This Ruffner Mountain (Alabama) population shows a high number of unique haplotypes, which can be divided into two main groups. One group shares homology with the widespread and evolutionarily recent C. dentata haplotype. The other group shares homology with American chestnuts and Allegheny chinkapin taxa from southern states. This group has been the result of recent and more ancient cp capture and hybridization, indicative of hybrid zone clustering and glacial refugial origin. The range of C. pumila must have been more extensive along the Coastal Plains region, since only a few mutations separate the Ozark chinkapin from the main Allegheny chinkapin haplotype. The geographic origin of the American Castanea species complex appears to be in the Gulf Coast region.  相似文献

Somaclonal variation during interior spruce (Picea glauca engelmannii complex) somatic embryogenesis was evaluated using culture morphology and isozyme analysis. Genotype-specific abscisic acid-dependent developmental profiles and isozyme patterns were similar for subclone and parent line embryogenic cultures and cotyledonary somatic embryos. Extensive analysis of fifteen hundred subclone embryos of one genotype revealed no isozyme pattern variation. Initiation of embryogenic cultures was dependent on the developmental stage of the explant although cultures derived from different stages were morphologically similar. The embryogenic cultures initiated from interior spruce embryos show a high degree of genetic stability in that the morphological behavior and isozyme phenotype were always consistent with that of the explant genotype. These results support the conclusion that this culture system is appropriate for clonal propagation of interior spruce.  相似文献
