Summary The Southeast Asian antTetraponera sp. nearattenuata F. Smith inhabits internodes of large bamboo species that it shares with symbiotic pseudococcids. It finds access to this nesting habitat via small holes made by wood-boring insects. During heavy rain, runoff water collects in these punctured internodes. TheTetraponera workers remove the water by ingesting it, walking to the entrance hole, and regurgitating it to the outside. In this way, they 1) reduce the danger of colony members drowing, 2) enable their symbionts to feed also on the internode floor, and 3) prevent excessive growth of microbes in the nest.  相似文献

The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a large gene family that is found in most vertebrates and has an important influence on body odour preference and mate selection in animals. In this research we found, that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) phenotype is strongly connected with the strength and pleasantness of perceived odour of selected chemical compounds found in sweat. Among different chemical classes of compounds tested, the esters of fatty acids such as methyl undecanoate, methyl decanoate, methyl nonanoate, methyl octanoate and methyl hexanoate show strongest connection to HLA. On the other hand, our experiment did not confirm the connection of MHC to the perceived strength and pleasantness of body odour.  相似文献

The reaction catalyzed by CTP:phosphocholine cytidylyltransferase in the reverse direction, i.e. the formation of CTP and phosphocholine from CDP-choline and pyrophosphate, is slightly faster than the reaction in the forward direction. The reverse reaction is optimal at 2 mM pyrophosphate and 6 mM Mg2+, in both fetal and adult preparations. The apparent substrate Km values for phosphocholine, CDP-choline, and pyrophosphate are similar in the fetal and adult forms of the enzyme. The enzyme activity is separated into two forms by gel filtration. The enzyme from adult lung exists as a high molecular weight species, ranging in size from 5 X 10(6) to 50 X 10(6). The enzyme from fetal lung exists as a 190,000 molecular weight species and is totally dependent upon added anionic phospholipid for activity in both the forward and reverse direction. The addition of phosphatidylglycerol gives maximal activity, while phosphatidylinositol or cardiolipin produce about 60 to 70% of the maximal activity. Enzyme activation is accompanied by an aggregation of the enzyme. A sonicated preparation of phosphatidylglycerol is a more efficient activator than a preparation mixed on a Vortex mixer (KA = 30 micronM) and also converts a larger proportion of enzyme from fetal lung into a high molecular weight species. The enzyme from adult lung can be dissociated into a form in fetal lung. The dissociated species can be converted back to a high molecular weight form in the presence of phosphatidylglycerol.  相似文献

We report here on a comparative developmental profile of plant hormone cytokinins in relation to cell size, cell number and endoreduplicaUon in developing maize caryopsis of a cell wall invertase-deficient miniature1 (mn1) seed mutant and its wild type, Mn1, genotype. Both genotypes showed extremely high levels of total cytokinins during the very early stages of development, followed by a marked and genotype specific reduction. While the decrease of cytokinins in Mn1 was associated with their deactivation by 9-glucosylation, the absolute and the relative part of active cytokinin forms was higher in the mutant. During the exponential growth phase of endosperm between 6 d after pollination and 9 d after pollination, the mean cell doubling time, the absolute growth rate and the level of endoreduplication were similar in the two genotypes. However, the entire duration of growth was longer in Mnl compared with mnl, resulting in a significantly higher cell number in the Mnl endosperm. These data correlate with the previously reported peak levels of the Mn1-encoded cell wall invertase-2 (INCW2) at 12 d after pollination in the Mn1 endosperm. A model showing possible crosstalk among cytokinins, cell cycle and cell wall invertase as causal to increased cell number and sink strength of the Mn1 developing endosperm is discussed.  相似文献
