The jumping spider Cosmophasis umbratica from Singapore is strongly sexually dimorphic. The males, but not the females, reflect ultraviolet as well as green-orange light. The scales responsible for this are composed of a chitin-air-chitin sandwich in which the chitin layers are three-quarters of a wavelength thick and the air gap a quarter wavelength (where lambda=600 nm, the peak wavelength of the principal reflection maximum). It is shown that this configuration produces a second reflectance peak at approximately 385 nm, accounting for the observed reflection in the ultraviolet. Other scales have a similar thickness of chitin but lack the air gap and thus produce a dull purple reflection. This novel mechanism provides the spiders with two colour signals, both of which are important in mating displays.  相似文献

The pale spitting spider Scytodes pallida (Aranae: Scytodidae) has a unique habit of spitting a glue‐like and possibly toxic substance at its prey to render them immobile prior to envenomation. Quantitative behavioural studies involving the spit, a first for S. pallida, demonstrate that the spider regulates its spit expenditure when offered prey of variable sizes and struggling intensities. This behaviour interestingly mirrors the regulation of venom expenditure according to prey sizes and difficulties exhibited in other non‐spitting spiders. The spit, however, did not appear to have any toxic effects on different prey types exposed to the spit, opposing the long‐standing belief that the spit from scytodids can poison prey.  相似文献

The prey-catching techniques and prey preferences of Habrocestum pulex (Hentz), ant-eating jumping spider (Araneae: Salticidae) from North America, were studied in the laboratory. H. pulex uses prey-specific, prey-catching behaviour against ants. Ants, but not other insects, were consistently attacked head-on. After attacking an ant, but not after attacking other insects, H. pulex kept its forelegs extended laterally and forwards without touching the ground. H. pulex feeds on ants in preference to other insects. Preference for ants and prey-specific predatory behaviour do not depend on prior experience with ants. As in earlier studies of other ant-eating salticids, three different types of tests for prey preference were carried out, using active, living prey: Type 1 (one type of prey presented to salticid at a time on alternate days); Type 2 (two types of prey presented to salticid simultaneously); and Type 3 (salticid feeding on one type of prey presented with alternative prey of another type). However, newly-designed apparatus made testing more efficient. Preference for ants over other insects is shown not to depend on level of activity or any other cues from prey movement pattern: Type 1 and Type 2 tests were carried out using motionless (dead) lures, and again ants were taken in preference to other insects. Findings from this study are discussed in relation to recent findings on other ant-eating salticids.  相似文献

Many orb-web weaving spiders add conspicuous silken structures, called stabilimenta, to the hub of their webs, which are hypothesized to attract more prey. However, they may also attract predators. Orb spiders should therefore alter their web-building behaviour to minimize predation risk. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally examining web-building responses of the St Andrew cross spider, Argiope versicolor, to predation risk from one of its natural predators, the jumping spider Portia labiata. We randomly assigned A. versicolor juveniles to one of three treatments: (1) blank control (clean blotting paper: no odour from the predator or nonpredator); (2) predator odour cues from P. labiata; and (3) nonpredator control (odour cues from Leucauge decorata). Each individual of A. versicolor was monitored until it had built five consecutive webs (two webs before and three webs after the introduction of predator cues). When exposed to predator cues, the juveniles not only decreased the frequency of stabilimentum building but also refrained from increasing stabilimentum area, capture area and capture silk thread with subsequent webs compared with the blank control and the nonpredator control. Web-building traits, however, were not significantly different between the blank control and the nonpredator control. One plausible explanation is that A. versicolor juveniles can detect and discriminate between predators and nonpredators through olfactory cues and alter stabilimentum building and other web traits in response to the risk of predation. This is the first demonstration of an adaptive, plastic web-building behavioural response induced by chemical cues from a predator.  相似文献

BackgroundChina is a high tuberculosis (TB) burden country. More than half of acute TB cases first seek medical care in village doctors’ clinics or community health centers. Despite being responsible for patient referral and management, village doctors are not systematically evaluated for TB infection or disease. We assessed prevalence and incidence of latent TB infection (LTBI) among village doctors in China.ConclusionsPrevalence and incidence of LTBI among Chinese village doctors is high. TB infection control measures should be strengthened among village doctors and at village healthcare settings.  相似文献

Many spiders possess myrmecomorphy, and species of the jumping spider genus Myrmarachne exhibit nearly perfect ant mimicry. Most salticids are diurnal predators with unusually high visual acuity that prey on various arthropods, including conspecifics. In this study, we tested whether predation pressure from large jumping spiders is one possible driving force of perfect ant mimicry in jumping spiders. The results showed that small non-ant-mimicking jumping spiders were readily treated as prey by large ones (no matter whether heterospecific or conspecific) and suffered high attack and mortality rates. The size difference between small and large jumping spiders significantly affected the outcomes of predatory interactions between them: the smaller the juvenile jumping spiders, the higher the predation risk from large ones. The attack and mortality rates of ant-mimicking jumping spiders were significantly lower than those of non-ant-mimicking jumping spiders, indicating that a resemblance to ants could provide protection against salticid predation. However, results of multivariate behavioural analyses showed that the responses of large jumping spiders to ants and ant-mimicking salticids differed significantly. Results of this study indicate that predation pressure from large jumping spiders might be one selection force driving the evolution of nearly perfect myrmecomorphy in spiders and other arthropods.  相似文献

Sexual conflict is common in animals, and female sexual cannibalism represents an extreme form of sexual conflict. Males in many species have evolved a variety of strategies to circumvent or decrease the risk of female sexual cannibalism. Opportunistic mating, by which a male mates with a female when she is disturbed or when she is feeding or undertaking moulting, is one of such kinds of strategies, and widely occurs in many animals, especially in spiders. However, whether the occurrence of male opportunistic mating depends on the intensity of female sexual cannibalism remains largely unexplored. We predicted a positive correlation between them. In this study, we tested this prediction by performing a series of mating trials in the laboratory using 3 species of web-building spiders with different intensities of female sexual cannibalism: Nephila pilipes, Nephilengys malabarensis, and Parasteatoda tepidariorum. We found that the occurrence of male opportunistic mating was positively, though not statistically significantly, correlated with the intensity of female sexual cannibalism, thus supporting our hypothesis. All together, we provide evidence that male opportunistic mating may have evolved to respond to the selection pressure posed by female sexual cannibalism.  相似文献

Jumping spiders are known to possess ultraviolet (UV) receptors in the retinas of their large-principal eyes. The existence of UV visual cells, however, does not prove that jumping spiders can see into the UV part of spectrum (300–400 nm) or whether such an ability plays any role in salticid intra-specific interactions. In the study reported herein, we performed behavioural experiments to test whether a UV−reflecting jumping spider, Cosmophasis umbratica, is sensitive to UV wavelengths and whether UV cues are important in intra-specific communication. The absence of UV cues not only affected intra-specific behaviour by significantly reducing the frequency of agonistic displays, but also elicited unprecedented courtship displays in males towards their own mirror images and conspecific opponents. Furthermore, C. umbratica males were able to respond rapidly to changes in UV cues of conspecific mirror images by switching between agonistic and courtship displays. These findings clearly demonstrate that C. umbratica males are capable of seeing UV wavelengths and that UV cues are necessary and sufficient for this species to enable the agonistic displays. Hence, UV light may have an important role to play in intra-specific communication in jumping spiders.  相似文献
