Abstract

Manual skill is now widely recognised as an important aspect of training in surgery. However, measurement of the skill of a surgeon has in the past been rather subjective in nature, relying on the judgement of experts in the analysis of videotapes. Objective measurements can be made by analysing the velocities of a surgeon's hands during a procedure. In particular, we have found that the number of movements made during a typical procedure will decrease as the surgeon's skill increases. Velocity traces display purposeful movements corrupted by uncorrelated noise from sources such as hand tremor and measurement artefacts. However, we have found that it is possible to filter the noise effectively. Furthermore, we have shown that the skill measurement obtained by counting movements is highly robust to over or under filtering.  相似文献

Abstract: Ediacaran structures known as ‘pizza discs’ or Ivesheadia have long been considered enigmatic. They are amongst the oldest known members of the Ediacara biota, apparently restricted to the Avalonian successions of Newfoundland and the UK, c. 579–560 Ma. Here, we suggest that these impressions are taphomorphs, resulting from the post‐mortem decay of the frondose Ediacaran biota. Ediacaran fossils range from well‐preserved, high‐fidelity variants to almost completely effaced specimens. The effaced specimens are inferred to have undergone modification of their original morphology by post‐mortem microbial decay on the sea floor, combined with sediment trapping and binding. In this style of preservation, morphological details within the organism became variously subdued as a function of the extent of organic decay prior to casting by overlying sediments. Decay and effacement were progressive in nature, producing a continuum of grades of preservation on Ediacaran bedding planes. Fossils preserved by such ‘effaced preservation’ are those that have suffered these processes to the extent that only their gross form can be determined. We suggest that the lack of detailed morphology in effaced specimens renders such fossils unsuitable for use as type material, as it is possible that several taxa may, upon degradation and burial, generate similar morphological taphomorphs. We here reinterpret the genus Ivesheadia as a taphomorph resulting from extensive post‐mortem decay of frondose organisms. Blackbrookia, Pseudovendia and Shepshedia from beds of comparable age in England are likewise regarded as taphomorphs broadly related to Charnia or Charniodiscus spp. To reflect the suggestion that such impressions are likely to be taphomorphs, and not taxonomically discrete, we propose the term ivesheadiomorphs to incorporate all such effaced taphonomic expressions of Ediacaran macrofossil taxa in Avalonian assemblages. Our recognition of effaced preservation has significant implications for Ediacaran taxonomy, and consequently for measures of Ediacaran diversity and disparity. It is implied that Avalonian assemblages preserve both organisms that were alive and organisms that were already dead at the time of burial. As such, the fossil assemblages cannot be taken to represent census populations of living organisms, as in prior interpretations.  相似文献

Body size is often associated with a dietary divergence within taxonomically related groups so that large animals are often folivorous, while smaller species shift progressively towards omnivory or carnivory. This trend may be influenced by allometric constrains which result in relatively high energetic requirements, but low gut capacities in small animals, compared to their large counterparts. The common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula, Phalangeridae) has six subspecies ranging widely in weight (1–4 kg). They are not strictly folivorous, but supplement their diet with more nutritious, non‐foliar foods. We predicted that T. vulpecula subspecies diverged in diet in association with body size, with smaller subspecies consuming higher proportions of non‐foliar foods. We assessed this with a review and a meta‐analysis of previous Australian studies. We also investigated the previously unquantified diet of T. v. hypoleucus at three sites in the northern jarrah forest of Western Australia. Results from the meta‐analysis and the review supported our prediction. However, the large variability in the data highlighted their limitations and those of the techniques commonly used to quantify the diet of T. vulpecula. Nonetheless, small subspecies of T. vulpecula appear to consume higher proportions of non‐foliar foods. These results should encourage further research into the body size/diet relationship within T. vulpecula and other possum species. Results from the dietary study of T. v. hypoleucus emphasized their omnivorous diet, which was dominated by foliage and flowers and smaller proportions of invertebrates, seeds and fruits. The common brushtail possum is seldom an exclusive arboreal folivore, but rather ranges from folivory to omnivory.  相似文献

We studied the effects of substrate structure on locomotor performance in a climbing gecko, Hemidactylus garnoti . We quantified three performance traits (acceleration capacity, instantaneous speed, and final speed) on three substrates: (i) smooth wood, (ii) a cloth surface, and (iii) a wire mesh. While acceleration capacity and instantaneous speed were highest on the wooden surface, final speed did not differ significantly among substrates. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures, we estimated that 98% of the wooden surface is available for adhesion by the setae on the toepads, while this percentage is much lower for the mesh and cloth (41 and 37%, respectively). We suggest that when a gecko climbs up a gap-filled substrate, such as the wire mesh or cloth, adhesion will only happen between part of the toepad and the substrate, resulting in a diminished acceleration capacity. The higher acceleration capacity on the wooden substrate and the fact that the geckos tend to slip less often on this particular surface, may explain the difference in instantaneous speed. As for final speed, geckos might achieve similar final speeds on all three substrates by employing different locomotor strategies. Abstract The longevity of a leaf is related to the benefit that the plant is able to derive from it. This benefit varies among seasons and as more leaves emerge, such that leaf lifespan can be limited by canopy position rather than physiological age. Using interval‐censored failure time analysis, we investigate leaf lifespan for 34 Mediterranean species in a previously published dataset involving species with different life forms and functional strategies. Failure time regression models were used to determine leaf lifespan, and to investigate how these effects varied among species. Median lifespan estimated for each species with two methods differed by less than 10% on average, but varied from 0.02–19.5% depending on the shape of the underlying failure time distribution. Within shoots, later‐emerging leaves had shorter lifespans for species with longer periods of leaf emergence, and the reverse was true for species with short emergence. Having accounted for the within‐shoot effect, leaves emerging in spring had shorter lifespans, particularly herbaceous species, whereas the reverse was true woody species. These effects were consistent among life forms and successional stages, and consistent with theories of within‐shoot translocation of resources following self‐shading.  相似文献

Although there has been much recent interest in ant-plant mutualisms, few data are available on the effects of foraging ants on herbivore numbers and levels of herbivory on plants that do not offer specific inducements to attract ant visitation. In forestry plantations and tropical crops, ants have erratic but sometimes dramatic effects on the numbers of insect herbivores but, in more natural habitats, their effects on levels of herbivory appear to be largely unknown. In Australia, where ants and Eucalyptus woodlands are ubiquitous and abundant and where considerable debate has occurred regarding levels of herbivory in Eucalyptus forests, very little work has been done to examine the effects of ants on densities of insect herbivores on eucalypts. In this study, ants were experimentally excluded from mature and immature foliage of saplings of the mallee Eucalyptus incrassata in South Australia, and herbivore numbers and levels of leaf herbivory were assessed during the next 6 months. No significant differences in herbivory were found between ant-access and ant-exclusion treatments. In spring and early summer, ants were found in associations with aggregations of eurymelid bugs on young foliage, and the effects of ants on bug densities were experimentally investigated. Bug densities decreased rapidly in ant-exclusion treatments compared with ant-access controls. Ants also quickly removed seeds of E. incrassata from experimental caches. The potential of ants to limit the numbers of insect herbivores on eucalypts seems limited given their tendency to form mutualistic associations with sap-feeding Homopterans and because of a lack of other herbivores that are particularly vulnerable to ant predation.  相似文献

In addition to very effectively suppressing bracken frond regeneration for two years at levels of 2.24 kg a. i./ha and above, glyphosate had considerable effects on the rhizome system. Dry weight of frond-bearing rhizomes, number of living apices and developed buds, number and viability of dormant buds and starch content of storage rhizomes were all markedly reduced. The effects on dormant buds and starch content are particularly important when considering frond regeneration and as a consequence of these, glyphosate is likely to give long lasting control of bracken. Low levels of glyphosate (0.02 and 0.07 kg a. i./ha) did not stimulate bracken growth, while the addition of NH4SCN apparently inhibited the action of the sub-lethal rate of 0.56 kg a. i./ha.  相似文献

Although there have been numerous life-history reviews of mammals at high taxonomic levels (e.g. among families within orders), there are far fewer studies at lower taxonomic levels (e.g. among species within genera). Data on adult weights, litter size, gestation length, neonate weight, age and weight at weaning, growth rate to weaning, maximum life span, and length of the breeding season were compiled from the literature on five species of Clethrionomys and 33 species of Microtus. Variability in litter size and male body weights was not significantly different when compared between cyclic and non-cyclic populations. Coefficients of variation were also calculated for the three species with the most data (C. gapperi, C. glareolus and M. pennsylvanicus ). These values showed that the amount of intraspecific variation differed among traits as well as among species. Gestation length was the most invariable of all traits and variation in adult weights, neonate weight, gestation length, and litter size had similar values to those reported for Peromyscus maniculatus. Five and eight traits differed among Clethrionomys and Microtus species, respectively. Differences in litter size, adult weights and length of the breeding season were common to both genera. Male weight, gestation length and neonate weight as well as length of the breeding season were different between genera. Very few traits covaried within C. gapperi, C. glareolus or M. pennsylvanicus. Similarly, few traits covaried among all Clethrionomys populations. However, among all Microtus populations and Microtus species, 11 and 12 correlations were significant. Many of the patterns found in Microtus involved positive relationships between female weight and some other trait. These patterns have also been found by broader surveys at higher taxonomic levels. Large species of Microtus had larger offspring, a greater litter size and occurred in short-season environments relative to small species of this genus.  相似文献
