Abstract: Mahalanobis Distance (D2) Statistic is a multivariate statistical method that has been used to model habitats occupied by wildlife and plant species. The output, whether standardized squared distance or probability values, represents the similarity of a given set of values with those of an optimum habitat configuration defined exclusively by sites where the species of interest is known to occur. Typically, all principal components with nonzero eigenvalues are used to calculate D2 values. We partitioned D2 into contributions from individual principal components (PCs) and selected PCs corresponding to relatively invariant aspects of the environment across all use sites to formulate D2(k). Partitioned Mahalanobis D2(k) represents the similarity of a given set of values with those of “minimum” habitat requirements of the species as defined by occupied sites using the k subset of principal components. We created a GIS-based model of the habitat surrounding 39 confirmed timber rattlesnake hibernacula on the Madison County Wildlife Management Area in northwest Arkansas, USA, using slope, aspect, elevation, and 11 physical soil attributes. We retained 4 of 15 principal components in D2(k = 4) calculations, and minimum habitat requirements corresponded to a combination of moderate slope, south to southwest facing slopes, and medium to high elevations. We used bootstrap and cross-validation techniques to examine the stability of the correlation matrix and the effect of each site on overall D2(k) values. The D2(k = 4) model specifically highlighted habitats similar to known rattlesnake hibernacula. We present a method to translate the probability surface into a qualitative data layer useful in making management decisions by examining the cumulative distributions of the percentages of (1) hibernacula correctly classified and (2) the study area predicted. We selected the probability threshold that maximized the predictive gain by including the greatest number of hibernacula in the smallest area. The probability threshold 0.2 captured 82% of the known hibernacula in 25% of the 5,666-ha study area. Partitioned Mahalanobis D2(k) requires only data for where species are known to occur, thus circumventing costly errors in misclassifying habitat use with commonly used classification algorithms that require dichotomous data sets.  相似文献

The cycad Zamia furfuracea L.Fil. Is pollinated by a curculionid beetle, Rhopalotria mollis Sharp which completes its life cycle in male cones of the cycad, and effectively pollinates female coneS. Idioblasts within parenchyma in both male and female cones appear to contain toxic compounds, including at least one neurotoxin, 2-amino-3-(methylamino) propanoic acid (BMAA), and a toxic glycoside, methylazoxymethanol-/!-primeveroside (macrozamin). Idioblasts appear structurally unmodified in male cones throughout the period of pollen maturation, and feeding weevils consume much of the starch-rich microsporophyll parenchyma tissue, including idioblastS. During this activity no appreciable change in morphology or staining reactions of male-cone idioblasts is detectable. Prior to pollen receptivity, female-cone idioblasts resemble those of male cones. Thereafter, many female-cone idioblasts show marked changes in morphology and content not caused by the weevils themselveS. Idioblast changes in female cones are probably associated with the defence of female-cone resources against predation by animals, including pollinating weevils, and may relate to mobilization of toxinS. Absence of similar morphological changes in male-cone idioblasts is correlated with toxin sequestration, enabling the pollinator to breed and feed without intoxication.  相似文献

We have assessed the effect of various medium supplements inpromoting the ability of maize (Zea mays L.) inbred FR27rhmsuspension cultures to grow following a period of 4 °C chillingstress. Following a 4 week exposure to 4 °C in culture mediumwithout proline, no cell growth occurred upon subsequent incubationat 28°C for 2 weeks. This inhibition was reversed when 3to 48 mol m–3 proline or 0.1 mol m–3 putrescineor 0.01 mol m–3 spermidine were present in the mediumduring the chilling stress. On the other hand, suspensions weremade more sensitive to 4°C by blocking polyamine biosynthesiswith 1.0 mol m–3 methylglyoxal bis (guanylhydrazone) (MGBG)or a combination of 1.0 mol m–3 difluoromethylornithine(DFMO) and 1.0 mol m–3 difluoromethylarginine (DFMA).The addition of 10 mol m–3 putrescine to the suspensioncontaining DFMO and DFMA prevented the increased chilling sensitivity.Electrolyte leakage studies conducted to assess membrane integrityafter 4 weeks at 4°C and a 2 week regrowth period showedthat cells treated with no polyamines (control), 0.01 mol m–3spermidine, 1.0 mol m–3 putrescine, or 1.0 mol m–3MGBG lost 43, 32, 14, and 100% of the total electrolyte pool,respectively. SUMMARY: During the steam sterilization of dressings some degree of superheating occurs. With dressings normally hydrated, that is with about 5% moisture content, the small degree of superheating which occurs is unlikely to be of consequence; but if dressings contain less than 1% of moisture before sterilization, a significant degree of superheating may occur. The use of drums is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage in regulating superheating, which occurs to the same degree whether the air is removed initially by vacuum pump or by downward displacement. The use of a high initial vacuum does not increase the risk of superheating.  相似文献

The niche hypothesis predicts that some introduced species establish and spread successfully because their new environment provides expanded niche opportunities compared with their native environments. By investigating nestling survival, growth and body condition in relation to diet composition and prey abundance, we tested the prediction that the success of Yellowhammers Emberiza citrinella in New Zealand could be explained by the availability of better quality food resources in its introduced range compared with its native range. We found that Yellowhammer nestlings in New Zealand were larger and heavier than those in Britain, but that nestling survival and body condition did not differ between countries. The preferred prey items, which had some influence on nestling development and survival, were more prevalent in the diet of nestlings in New Zealand, suggesting that nestlings in the introduced range had a superior quality diet. However, there was little evidence to support the prediction that the preferred prey were more abundant in the introduced range, implying that some other factor such as prey accessibility or adult fitness may account for the differences in diet between countries.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Dotterel Charadrius morinellus adults and chicks was studied on three Scottish breeding areas. On the basis of 2324 prey items identified from 234 faeces, we show that (i) birds feed selectively and (ii) age-related and seasonal differences in food selection occur.
The diet comprised mainly beetles (Coleoptera), sawflies (Symphyta) and the adults and larvae of Tipula montana. The faeces of adult Dotterel contained a high proportion of beetles, whereas chick faeces had more soft-bodied prey. However, when T. montana adults emerged en masse (every second year) both adults and chicks took more tipulids. On one area, larval T. montana comprised much of the diet soon after the birds arrived on their breeding grounds and just before leaving in autumn. The preferred feeding habitats were flat or gently sloping Racomitrium lanuginosum or Juncus trifidus heaths or the transition zone between moss heath and montane bog. Dwarf-shrub, grass-dominated and single bog communities were avoided. The preferred feeding habitats were those in which pitfall trap catches of the main prey were highest. A close juxtaposition of montane bog and R. lanuginosum heaths met the feeding requirements of both chicks and adults, respectively. Recent changes in the breeding distribution of Dotterel in Britain may be related to de- terioration in feeding and breeding habitat due to overgrazing by sheep and greater habitat acidification.  相似文献
