USE OF COMPUTER-GENERATED IMAGES AND CONJOINT ANALYSIS TO INVESTIGATE SENSORY EXPECTATIONS

Consumers unfamiliar with passion-fruit juice were presented with 24 computer generated package images on which six packaging factors (background color, picture, information, brand, language and shape) had been manipulated and asked to give scores for six expected sensory attributes (sweetness, pureness, sharpness, refreshing, freshness, naturalness) and liking. Significant effects were obtained for each attribute, with background color and information being the most important. Consumers varying in Need For Cognition (NFC) were affected differently by the investigated features of the package. High NFC individuals used less of the packaging factors than low NFC subjects did.     

Concerning invasive species: Reply to Brown and Sax

Abstract Biological invasions have commonly occurred, and to a lesser degree continue to do so, without human assistance. It is, however, a combination of the rate and magnitude, as well as the distances and agency involved, that separates human‐driven invasion processes from self‐perpetuated colonization events. Exotic species are a pervasive and major component of human‐induced global change. Decisions to manage invasive species will require judgements to be communicated from scientists to policy makers, because scientists may often be the only ones in the position to make them.     

Eimeria ovata n. sp. and Other Coccidia of the Eastern Chipmunk Tamias striatus in Massachusetts

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria vilasi, E. wisconsinensis , and E. ovata n. sp. were found in the intestinal contents of eastern chipmunks Tamias striatus in Massachusetts. The oocysts of E. ovata are ovoid with mean dimensions of 26.1 × 16.7 μ. The outer oocyst wall is rough, with small pits. Micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. Sporulation time at room temperature is 7–8 days.     

Retention Time of Telazol in Black Bears

ABSTRACT Telazol® (Fort Dodge Animal Health, Fort Dodge, IA) is an effective immobilization drug for American black bears (Ursus americanus), but concern exists regarding retention time of this drug in tissues relative to human consumption of bears. Therefore, we evaluated retention time of Telazol in captured American black bears immobilized with Telazol and held in captivity for 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. We detected Telazol in muscle and liver of one bear on day 7, in serum from 2 bears on day 7, and in urine of one bear each on day 3 and day 14. Our findings suggest Telazol is metabolized and eliminated quickly from the bear's system and should allow managers additional flexibility in mark-recapture studies and nuisance situations.     

Strcture of the Mature Embryo of Theobroma cacao L.

The mature embryo of Theobroma cacao L. consists of an embryonicaxis and two cotyledons. The cotyledonary tissue comprises thebulk of the embryo and contains mature and maturing vasculartissue surrounded by a bundle sheath. The cells of the groundtissue are filled with starch grains, anthocyanin pigments,or mucilage. The embryonic axis consists of epicotyl, hypocotyl,and root meristem. Maturation of the vascular tissue has begunin the procambium, where xylem maturation is ahead of phloemmaturation. Mucilage cells are found throughout the tissue of the axis.Most of the cells of the embryonic tissue contain starch grains.
