ABSTRACT Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) populations in the lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV), USA, historically averaged 1.6 million and represented the largest concentrations of wintering mallards in North America. Effective management of this wintering population requires current information on use of habitats. Accordingly, we employed radiotelemetry techniques to assess proportional use of habitats by female mallards during winters 2004–2005 and 2005–2006. We divided winters into 4 time periods defined by hunting seasons (FIRST, SPLIT, SECOND, and POST) and recorded diurnal and nocturnal locations. We examined variations in proportional use of habitats and use of areas closed to hunting due to effects of age (immature or ad), winter (2004–2005 or 2005–2006), time period (SECOND or POST), individual female, and all potential interactions of these effects, using locations recorded during the latter 2 time periods. We found that diurnal and nocturnal proportional use of habitats varied inconsistently among time periods and winters. Mean proportional use of forested wetlands ranged from 0.475 to 0.816 and from 0.428 to 0.764 during diurnal and nocturnal sampling periods, respectively. Diurnal proportional use of areas closed to hunting varied inconsistently among time periods and winters. Mean proportional use of areas closed to hunting ranged from 0.183 to 0.423 during diurnal sampling periods. Nocturnal use of areas closed to hunting varied inconsistently among female ages and time periods and among female ages and winters. Mean proportional use of areas closed to hunting ranged from 0.211 to 0.445 during nocturnal sampling periods. Our research suggests that forested wetlands in the LMAV provide important wintering habitats for female mallards; continued restoration and establishment of these habitats should benefit female mallards.  相似文献

Abstract: We studied northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) in western Oklahoma, USA, during the nesting seasons of 1992–2001. We obtained latitude-specific information on nesting biology and tested hypotheses on the cause of declines in clutch size with progression of the nesting season and on the phenological relation of first, second, and third nesting attempts. For pooled data on bobwhites alive during 15 April-15 September, 64 ± 6.5% of juvenile females (n = 56), 90 ± 10.0% of adult females (n = 9), 13 ± 4.1% of juveniles males (n = 68), and 41 ± 10.7% of adult males (n = 22) incubated ≥ 1 nest. Bobwhites that entered the reproduction period starting on 15 April (n = 229) accumulated 203 nesting attempts (male and female incubations), which translated to 1.7 attempts/hen for all hens that entered (n = 117) and 3.1 attempts/hen for hens that survived to 15 September (n = 65). Overall success for incubated nests (48 ± 2.8%, n = 331) was independent of sex-age class and nesting attempt (1, 2, 3), but it declined at a rate of 2.37%/year (95% CL = 1.10–3.64%/year) during the study. Clutch size declined by 1 egg for every 14–20 elapsed days in the nesting season and the rate of decline was independent of incubation attempt (1 or 2); this result suggests that lower clutch sizes later in the nest season were not necessarily a function of re-nesting. Ending of nest-incubation attempts (1, 2, 3) occurred within an 8-day period from 26 August-2 September. Our results implied that early-season nesting cover is a management concern and that high nest success is possible in the absence of nest predator suppression where abundant nest sites occur across the landscape.  相似文献

The structure and functioning of the dicynodont jaw system are described. A pivoting action of the lower jaw around the palate posteromedian to the caniniform processes is as basic to the jaw movement as is the well-known double-convex jaw articulation. The sequence of origin of the characteristic features of the dicynodonts is analysed cladistically; this demonstrates the patterns of association of these characters into functional character-complexes. The structures of the palate and lower jaw, and their functional integration in feeding, are described and illustrated in standard format. Five different lineages of dicynodont can be identified: Eodicynodon; the robertoids (including Diictodon ); the dicynodontoids (including Dicynodon and the majority of the large dicynodont genera of the Permian and Triassic); the endothiodontoids (including Prodicynodon [='Chelydontops'] and Pristerodon ), and the emydopoids (including Cistecephalus, Myosaurus and Kingoria ). Eodicynodon or a similar form could have been ancestral to the other four lineages. The robertoids probably fed upon the stems and rhizomes of equisetaleans, while the varied dicynodontoids probably fed upon the varied glossopterid seed-ferns. The endothiodontoids, too, were probably herbivorous, but many, perhaps all, of the small emydopoids were burrowing and may have been omnivorous. The dicynodonts were probably ectothermal, and the dicynodontoids may have migrated to warmer latitudes in the winter. Only c. 20 genera of Karoo dicynodont are now recognized as valid, and it is suggested that this fauna is now almost completely known. Their distribution in the Karoo biozones is reviewed and correlated with environmental changes. The Permian ancestors of the Triassic dicynodonts, including Lystrosaurus , probably lived on higher, drier ground, and were therefore already adapted to the more fibrous food that spread into the basins as the climate became drier in the Triassic.  相似文献

Abstract: Statistics is one of the most important yet difficult subjects for many ecology and wildlife graduate students to learn. Insufficient knowledge about how to conduct quality science and the ongoing debate about the relative value of competing statistical ideologies contribute to uncertainties among graduate students regarding which statistical tests are most appropriate. Herein, we argue that increased education of the available statistical tests alone is unlikely to ameliorate the problem. Instead, we suggest that statistical uncertainties among graduate students are a secondary symptom of a larger problem. We believe the root cause lies in the lack of education on how to conduct science as an integrated process from hypothesis creation through statistical analysis. We argue that if students are taught to think about how each step of the process will affect all other steps, many statistical uncertainties will be avoided.  相似文献
