A model developed by the authors ( Huang et al. 1998 ) was further validated against field measurements from various regions of the world and calibrated to estimate methane emission from irrigated rice cultivation of China. On the basis of available information on rice cultivated area, growth duration, grain yield, soil texture and temperature, methane emission from Chinese rice paddies was estimated for 28 rice cultivated provinces in mainland. The calculated daily methane emission rates, on a provincial scale, ranged from 0.15 to 0.86 g m–2 with an average of 0.32 g m–2. Five of the top six locations with higher daily methane emissions are located at a latitude between 28° and 31° N. A total amount of 9.66 Tg (1 Tg = 1012 g) CH4 per year, ranging from 7.19 to 13.62, was estimated to be released from Chinese rice paddy soils. Of the total, 45% is emitted from the single-rice growing season, and 19% and 36% are from the early-rice and the late-rice growing seasons, respectively. Approximately 70% of the total is emitted in the region located at latitude between 25° and 32° N. The emissions from rice fields in Sichuan and Hunan Province were calculated to be 2.85 Tg y–1, accounting for ≈ 30% of the total. Comparisons of the estimated and the observed emission rates show that the estimates were, in general, close to the measurements at most locations.  相似文献

Vegetative branch buds of C. lutescens are non-axillary and occur within an abaxial, tubular extension of the leaf sheath, either at the base of a shoot or aerially, a position unusual for palms. Buds are initiated on the abaxial surface of a leaf during its first plastochron (the youngest leaf primordium). The foliar origin of the vegetative bud appears to be unique for angiosperms. In contrast, inflorescence buds are axillary and are initiated as an adaxial ridge on the base of a leaf during its third plastochron (the third primordium from the apex). Aerial branches and basal suckers are developmentally identical and changes in their phyllotaxis are described. As far as can be established by comparative morphology, other species of Chrysalidocarpus have the same type of branch development as in C. lutescens. The development of branches is related to the morphogenetic characteristics of arborescent monocotyledons.  相似文献

Lanolin containing 3H-IAA was applied to apical cut ends of stem segments and decapitated plants of Cordyline terminalis, a monocotyledon possessing true secondary growth. Distribution of extracted label showed that: 1) in horizontal stems up to 7 times as much label accumulates in the lower surface compared to the upper surface, and this ratio increases with distance from the cut apical surface; 2) in upright stems most label (62%) occurs in the cambial and cortical regions, external to the primary and secondary vascular tissues; and 3) in upright stems having the cambium and cortical regions removed by a girdle, label accumulates above the girdle (c. 10 times greater than the control). These data are in accord with a theory of branch dimorphism derived from morphological studies, which suggested that high auxin levels initiate and maintain rhizomes and low levels initiate leafy shoots.  相似文献

Fungicide residues in soils may affect nitrogen fixation by legumes. Effects of nine systemic fungicides, used against cereal pathogens, on Rhizobium trifolii and white clover were measured. Fenarimol and oxycarboxin inhibited growth of R. trifolii in vitro. The weight of clover plants after 10 weeks' growth in soil containing carboxin, oxycarboxin, benodanil, tridemorph and pyracarbolid was reduced. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation was decreased by carboxin, oxycarboxin and tridemorph present in soil at concentrations somewhat greater than that likely to result from several applications of the fungicide. Only tridemorph reduced nodulation. None of the compounds seems likely to affect nitrogen fixation in the field if applied at the recommended rate.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Conventional cladistic analyses of phylogeny can beinterpreted as operating at the level of phylogenetic trees.They assume that all "evolutionary steps" (transitions fromone character state to the next, along a morphocline) are independentand equal, and, on that basis, select the cladogram which isconsistent with the most parsimonious trees. Evaluation of theassumptions of independence and equality requires considerationof hypotheses at the levelof scenarios. In some cases, argumentsbased on functional analysis can suggest revised interpretationsof either homology or polarity. If properly formulated, thesearguments can alter the evaluation of parsimony for trees tothe extent that even the choice of cladogram is affected. Thestructure of scenario level arguments is identical to that ofarguments operating at tree level. Examples of phylogeneticinference in the context of xiphosurans (horseshoe crabs), usingboth comparative morphological and functional analysis, illustratethis approach. In different cases, orthodox interpretationsof relationship are either challenged or corroborated. Althoughthe introduction of functional analysis into the process ofphylogenetic inference may appear to compromise the usefulnessof the reconstructed phylogeny for testing hypotheses concerningthe role of natural selection in evolution, it actually increasesthe strength of such tests.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Rates of photosynthesis and community respiration were determined for benthic assemblages in Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran Desert stream in Arizona. Benthos in this stream can be separated into (1) mats of Cladophora glomerata and associated epiphytes and (2) assemblages of epipelic diatoms and blue-green algae. Community respiration and net photosynthesis were measured for these assemblages using submerged light-dark chambers in situ . Multiple regression analysis was used to predict (1) gross photosynthesis as a function of photosynthetically active radiation, temperature and chlorophyll-α concentration; and (2) community respiration as a function of temperature and biomass.
Calculations suggest that Sycamore Creek is autotrophic during the summer ( P/R = 1.7) and that the rates of gross photosynthesis ( P =8.5 g O2 m−2 day−1) and community respiration ( R = 5.1 g O2 m−2 day−1) are high for a small stream. Considerable difference exists between the Cladophora mat assemblages, in which mean P is 12.5gO2m−2 day−1and the P/R ratio is 2.3, and the epipelic assemblages in which mean P is 4.4 g O2m−2 day−1 and P/R is 0.96. The high rate of gross photosynthesis, low litter inputs, high biomass of algae and the intermittent but severe floods that characterize Sycamore Creek indicate that this stream and other similar desert streams are net exporters of organic matter and are, thereby, truly autotrophic stream ecosystems.  相似文献
