Abstract We surveyed herbaceous biomass across the range of Eucalyptus tetrodonta savannas in north‐western Australia. Sample sites (n = 211) were stratified within four broad geographical regions characterized by different mixes of land management regimes. Grasses dominated (87% mean) the herbaceous biomass. After controlling for climatic and edaphic gradients, herbaceous biomass was highest in the Greater Darwin region (2.2 t ha−1) which is managed predominantly by Europeans, and least under semi‐traditional Aboriginal management in Arnhem Land region (1.1 t ha−1). In the drier Gulf of Carpentaria and Kimberley regions, where a mix of Aboriginal, conservation and pastoral land uses occurs, fuel loads were higher than in Arnhem Land region but still considerably lower than around Darwin. Sarga was recorded in all regions except the Gulf of Carpentaria and had the highest biomass in Darwin (0.88 t ha−1) and lowest biomass in the Kimberley (0.54 t ha−1). The proportion of herbaceous biomass made up of perennial grasses was least in Darwin (17%) and greatest in the Gulf (77%) regions. We suggest that climate, soils and land management account for differences between the drier pastoral regions of the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Kimberley and the wet Greater Darwin region relative to the Arnhem Land region. The high frequency, and larger spatial scale, of fires in the Greater Darwin region relative to the Arnhem Land region underpins the contrasting trends in total herbaceous biomass and abundance of flammable annual grasses.  相似文献

A new system for simulating future belowground temperature increases was conceived, simulated, constructed and tested in a temperate deciduous forest in Oak Ridge, TN, USA. The new system uses low‐wattage, 3 m deep heaters installed around the circumference of a defined soil volume. The heaters add the necessary energy to achieve a set soil temperature differential within the treatment area and add exterior energy inputs equal to those, which might be lost from lateral heat conduction. The method, which was designed to work in conjunction with aboveground heated chambers, requires only two control sensor positions one for aboveground air temperatures at 1 m and another for belowground temperatures at 0.8 m. The method is capable of achieving temperature differentials of at least +4.0±0.5 °C for soils to a measured depth of ?2 m. These +4 °C differential soil temperatures were sustained in situ throughout 2009, and both diurnal and seasonal cycles at all soil depths were retained using this simple heating approach. Measured mean energy inputs required to sustain the target heating level of +4 °C over the 7.1 m2 target area were substantial for aboveground heating (21.1 kW h day?1 m?2), but 16 times lower for belowground heaters (1.3 kW h day?1 m?2). Observations of soil CO2 efflux from the surface of the target soil volumes showed CO2 losses throughout 2009 that were elevated above the temperature response curve that have been reported in previous near‐surface soil warming studies. Stimulation of biological activity within previously undisturbed deep‐soil carbon stocks is the hypothesized source. Long‐term research programs may be able to apply this new heating method that captures expected future warming and temperature dynamics throughout the soil profile to address uncertainties in process‐level responses of microbial, plant and animal communities in whole, intact ecosystems.  相似文献

1. Hypoxia occurs seasonally in many stratified coastal marine and freshwater ecosystems when bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations are depleted below 2–3 mg O2 L?1. 2. We evaluated the effects of hypoxia on fish habitat quality in the central basin of Lake Erie from 1987 to 2005, using bioenergetic growth rate potential (GRP) as a proxy for habitat quality. We compared the effect of hypoxia on habitat quality of (i) rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax mordax Mitchill (young‐of‐year, YOY, and adult), a cold‐water planktivore, (ii) emerald shiner, Notropis atherinoides Rafinesque (adult), a warm‐water planktivore, (iii) yellow perch, Perca flavescens Mitchill (YOY and adult), a cool‐water benthopelagic omnivore and (iv) round goby Neogobius melanostomus Pallas (adult) a eurythermal benthivore. Annual thermal and DO profiles were generated from 1D thermal and DO hydrodynamics models developed for Lake Erie’s central basin. 3. Hypoxia occurred annually, typically from mid‐July to mid‐October, which spatially and temporally overlaps with otherwise high benthic habitat quality. Hypoxia reduced the habitat quality across fish species and life stages, but the magnitude of the reduction varied both among and within species because of the differences in tolerance to low DO levels and warm‐water temperatures. 4. Across years, trends in habitat quality mirrored trends in phosphorus concentration and water column oxygen demand in central Lake Erie. The per cent reduction in habitat quality owing to hypoxia was greatest for adult rainbow smelt and round goby (mean: ?35%), followed by adult emerald shiner (mean: ?12%), YOY rainbow smelt (mean: ?10%) and YOY and adult yellow perch (mean: ?8.5%). 5. Our results highlight the importance of differential spatiotemporally interactive effects of DO and temperature on relative fish habitat quality and quantity. These effects have the potential to influence the performance of individual fish species as well as population dynamics, trophic interactions and fish community structure.  相似文献

Bulk amino acid compositions of larval cocoon silks of 24 species of ichneumonoid parasitic wasps, representing 13 subfamilies that kill the host in a larval or prepupal stage, are compared with those of their hosts to test the hypothesis that amino acid compositions of major protein products should, in certain cases, be similar on energetic grounds. Although substantial variation in amino acid composition was found among both parasitoids and hosts, suggesting the production of different types of silks, no significant general matching was detected. However, the trend in the degree of similarity observed was in the direction predicted by a priori consideration of the nature of the parasitoid – host association. Lack of a general association may be explained by the very simple silk glands of the parasitic wasps and by the fact that, in most cases, their hosts are not completely consumed at a time when they are likely to contain any large reserves of silk proteins. The three species of Cotesia (Braconidae: Microgastrinae) investigated stood out in that their silks showed considerable interspecific variation in molar percentage amino acid composition, and this might be associated with their apparent utilization of α-helical silks rather than fibroins.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 81 , 161–170.  相似文献

The use of coloration as a source of characters in phylogenetic reconstruction is investigated using 54 published data sets. Studies were divided into two categories based on a priori postulated roles of the coloration: (1) aposematic and mimetic coloration and (2) nonaposematic, nonmimetic coloration plus dual signals. Colour characters superficially appear to provide similar phylogenetic signal to morphological ones in the case of aposematic and mimetic coloration but significantly less in other situations. However, the data indicated that the apparent signal in the aposematic/mimetic studies tends to be in greater conflict with the morphological signal. It is proposed that this reflects constraints in the evolution of colour characters that are part of aposematic/mimetic patterns and not that they are necessarily good indicators of phylogeny.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 193–202.  相似文献

Examples of animal development that pose problems for Darwinian evolution by 'descent with modification' but are consistent with 'larval transfer' are discussed. Larval transfer claims that genes that prescribe larval forms originated in adults in other taxa, and have been transferred by hybridization. I now suggest that not only larvae but also components of animals have been transferred by hybridization. The ontogeny of some Cambrian metazoans without true larvae is discussed. The probable sequence of acquisition of larvae by hemichordates and echinoderms is presented. I contend (1) that there were no true larvae until after the establishment of classes in the respective phyla, (2) that early animals hybridized to produce chimeras of parts of dissimilar species, (3) that the Cambrian explosion resulted from many such hybridizations, and (4) that modern animal phyla and classes were produced by such early hybridizations, rather than by the gradual accumulation of specific differences.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 585–602.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships among most (143 genera) of the currently recognized genera of the braconid wasp subfamily Doryctinae were investigated using maximum parsimony analysis, employing 100 characters from external morphology and four additional, less well‐studied character systems (male genitalia, ovipositor structure, venom apparatus and larval cephalic structure). We investigated the ‘performance’ of characters from external morphology and the other character systems and the effects of abundant missing entries by comparing the data decisiveness, retention and consistency indices of four different character partitions. The results indicate that the performances of the different partitions are not related to the proportions of missing entries, but instead are negatively correlated to their proportion of informative characters, suggesting that the morphological information in this group is subject to high levels of homoplasy. The external morphological partition is significantly incongruent with respect to a data set comprising the other character systems based on the ILD test. Analyses supported neither the monophyly of the large tribes Doryctini and Hecabolini, nor the monophyly of the Spathiini and Heterospilini. Relationships obtained from successive approximation weighting analysis for the complete data differ considerably from the currently accepted tribal and subtribal classifications. The only exceptions were the Ypsistocerini and the Ecphylini, whose recognized members were recovered in single clades. A close relationship between the Binaerini and Holcobraconini, and also Monarea, is consistently supported by venom apparatus and ovipositor structure characters but is not indicated by external morphological data. Low bootstrap values obtained for most of the recovered clades in all analyses do not allow us to propose a meaningful reclassification for the group at this time.
