Male bird song may attract and stimulate females and may repelmales, but the evidence that song is essential for accomplishingthese "main functions" is not abundant. Correlations betweenmale song traits (such as repertoire size or singing rate) andcomponents of fitness reveal that important information, perhapsabout overall male quality, is available for listeners. To determinewhether birds use that information, however, will require researchersto manipulate song traits independently of male quality. Havingthen determined more rigorously the "current utility" of song,we will more clearly be able to infer how selection has shapedparticular song traits. We envision progress in understandingthe function(s) of bird song if investigators 1) thoroughlydescribe natural events, 2) use lucidly stated, multiple workinghypotheses, 3) realize the potential differences in song functionamong divergent taxonomic units, 4) transcend correlationalstudies by doing ingenious manipulative experiments, and 5)reason carefully when developing scenarios of evolutionary origin. 相似文献

Seed conditioning and germination in witchweed (Striga asiatica(L.) Kuntze) were temperature-dependent. With higher conditioningtemperatures, shorter conditioning time was required for germinationwith terminal dl-strigol (strigol) treatment at 30 °C. Maximumgermination (80100%) was obtained by conditioning inwater at 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C for 14, 7, 5 and 3 d, respectively,and terminally treating with 106 M strigol at 30 °C.Seeds conditioned in 108 M strigol instead of water germinatedmuch less with the same terminal strigol treatment. Generally,conditioning was slower when seeds were conditioned in strigolrather than water. The reduction in germination rate by pretreatmentin strigol or pretreatment at low temperatures could be overcomeby increasing the terminal strigol concentration in the germinationtest. Conditioned seeds did not germinate at 10 and 15 °Cwith a terminal 106 M strigol treatment but yielded closeto maximum germination at 25, 30 and 35 °C with the sameterminal strigol treatment. To obtain maximum germination, boththe minimum conditioning temperature and the minimum germinationtemperature for conditioned seeds were 20 °C. Low-molecular-weight glutenin subunits from the wheat (Triticumaestivum L.) cultivar Chinese Spring were mappedusing two dimensional electrophoresis (isoelectric focusingversus SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis). Protein spotswere electroblotted on to polyvinylidene difluoride membraneand characterized by N-terminal amino acid sequencing. Mostof the proteins that had accessible N-termini gave sequencesin agreement with known sequences for low-molecular-weight glutenins,-type gliadins, and -type gliadins. Two variants which havenot been seen in direct sequencing before were found. The gluteninstarting material was also reduced, alkylated, and partiallyfractionated by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography.Sequencing of these fractions, each of which contained a mixtureof proteins, confirmed the presence of the glutenin variantsfound in the spot sequencing. 1. Saprotrophic cord‐forming basidiomycetes are the primary agents of decomposition in forest ecosystems. Collembola and oribatid mites affect fungal growth and foraging, and therefore decomposition, through direct mycelial grazing. 2. Grazing on the fungal species Hypholoma fasciculare, Resinicium bicolor and Phanerochaete velutina by the collembola Folsomia candida, and the oribatid mites Steganacarus magnus, Euzetes globulus and Hermannia gibba was investigated in soil microcosms. 3. Folsomia candida grazed on all fungal species: radial extent of R. bicolor, hyphal coverage of all fungal species, and fractal dimension of R. bicolor and P. velutina were all reduced. Oribatid mites did not graze the fungi but did affect mycelial morphology. Steganacarus magnus caused a reduction in the radial extent of H. fasciculare, and the hyphal coverage and fractal dimension in both H. fasciculare and R. bicolor. Euzetes globulus and H. gibba reduced the hyphal coverage of P. velutina. 4. Oribatid mites are associated with a cornucopia of chemical secretions with possible anti‐fungal properties. Chemical analysis of H. gibba opisthonotal secretions revealed four main compounds, all of which are new to the known spectrum of opisthonotal components. The most abundant was (E)‐β‐farnesene. 5. Treatment effects were species‐specific in terms of both fungal and invertebrate species. This study provides the first evidence of non‐grazing effects of oribatid mites on fungal growth and morphology. This could potentially influence the spatial organisation of mycelium in forest soils and therefore the ability of fungi to locate, colonise and decompose dead organic matter. 相似文献

Three basic types of spiral cleavage are described: spiral cleavageby quartets, by duets, and by monets. Following F. R. Lillie'sconcept of adaptation in cleavage, the relation of each of thesecleavage modifications to the structure of the larva or juvenile,which develops therefrom, is considered. Photosynthetic rates of plants grown in natural systems exhibit diurnal patterns often characterized by an afternoon decline, even when measured under constant light and temperature conditions. Since we thought changes in the carbohydrate status could cause this pattern through feedback from starch and sucrose synthesis, we studied the natural fluctuations in photosynthesis rates of plants grown at 36 and 56 Pa CO2 at a FACE (free-air-CO2 -enrichment) research site. Light-saturated photosynthesis varied by 40% during the day and was independent of the light-limited quantum yield of photosynthesis, which varied little through the day. Photosynthesis did not correspond with xylem water potential or leaf carbohydrate build-up, but rather with diurnal changes in air vapor-pressure deficit and light. The afternoon decline in photosynthesis also corresponded with decreased stomatal conductance and decreased Rubisco carboxylation efficiency which in turn allowed leaf-airspace CO2 partial pressure to remain constant. Growth at elevated CO2 did not affect the afternoon decline in photosynthesis, but did stimulate early-morning photosynthesis rates relative to the rest of the day. Plants grown at 56 Pa CO2 had higher light-limited quantum yields than those at 36 Pa CO2 but, there was no growth–CO2 effect on quantum yield when measured at 2 kPa O2 . Therefore, understory plants have a high light-limited quantum yield that does not vary through the day. Thus, the major diurnal changes in photosynthesis occur under light-saturated conditions which may help understory saplings maximize their sunfleck-use-efficiency. 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The mycetozoan genus Echinosteliopsis, resembling the myxomycete Echinostelium in some of its features, is described. The single species, E. oligospora Reinhardt & Olive, forms small sporocarps which consist of a basal disk, stalk and a sporangium with only 1–8 spores. Spores form progressively, not simultaneously, by segmentation. The spores germinate to release non-flagellate amebae which, in liquid, assume a characteristic broad, fan shape. Each ameba has one or more nuclei. The nucleus is distinctive because of refractile, globular to elongate peripheral bodies which cytochemical tests indicate to be primarily RNA. At the time of nuclear division the characteristic RNA bodies disappear and, as observed with the phase microscope and in stained preparations, optically dense material accumulates in the middle area of the nucleus. Threads, either a spindle or actual chromatin, can be seen attached to the nuclear membrane. The threads separate to opposite poles as the nucleus elongates. During this division process the nuclear membrane apparently remains intact. Synchronous binucleate divisions, as well as a tripolar nuclear division, have been observed. Uninucleate and synchronous binucleate divisions may or may not be followed by cytokinesis. The absence of cell division after nuclear division leads to the production of cells with varying numbers of nuclei. Nuclear divisions in early sporangial stages and in spores have not been observed. The spores are uni- to multinucleate. In 8-spored sporangia and in most 4-spored sporangia there is a characteristic small “stalk spore” at the apex of the stalk. The stalk spore germinates slowly, if at all, but the larger spores germinate readily. No evidence of a sexual process has been found. 相似文献

During prolonged experimental submergence, freshwater turtlesbecome anoxic and develop a combined respiratory and non-respiratoryacidosis. Anoxia and acidosis are known to depress cardiac functionin turtles and other vertebrate species. In vitro studies ofventricular and atrial tissue of turtles indicate that increasedextracellular Ca++ concentration can reverse these depressantactions. Intact turtlesutilize this compensatory mechanism duringanoxia and other conditions leading to acidosis byincreasingplasma Ca++ concentration. In addition, cardiac cells may releaseCa++ from cell organelles to compensate for induced respiratoryacidosis.
