Poisoning by pesticides is considered one of the primary threats to the Red Kite Milvus milvus. We studied the diet of this raptor in an area of eastern France where the rodenticide bromadiolone is widely used to control Water Vole Arvicola terrestris outbreaks. A high degree of specialization for Water Voles was noted, as their remains were identified in all 119 pellets collected in autumn 2008, whereas other small rodent species and insects occurred in 27 and 9% of pellets, respectively. We estimated that Water Voles constituted 94% of the total biomass ingested by Red Kites under these conditions. Based on these data, the risk of secondary poisoning due to feeding on poisoned voles was assessed. Acute exposure on a single day was not considered a risk for Kites, but exposure to poisoned voles over 1 week represented the maximal risk for the Red Kite; the calculated dose of bromadiolone ingested by a Red Kite was 137 times higher than the toxicological benchmark for birds. A field survey in the studied area detected four dead Red Kites and one moribund bird in autumn 2008 but did not confirm that the cause of death was bromadiolone poisoning. We suggest that professional monitoring is needed to assess the impact of rodenticides on Red Kites in areas where voles are controlled. 相似文献

During the senescence of the leaves of Parthenocissus tricuspidata Planchon, the high level of Ca2+ ions liberated from pectic membranes in the aqueous medium of the blade causes a decrease in photophosphorylation and chlorophyll regeneration, while carboxylation and diffusion resistances increase. After the hydrolysis of its carbohydrate and protein reserves, the leaf blade can no longer contribute to the nutrition of the plant and abscission is prepared. 相似文献

IMPACT OF TRAINING ON BEER FLAVOR PERCEPTION AND DESCRIPTION: ARE TRAINED AND UNTRAINED SUBJECTS REALLY DIFFERENT? 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
This study examines the effect of beer assessment training on verbal and nonverbal performance. Two groups of subjects are asked to sort, match, and describe a set of 12 beers (6 supplemented and 6 commercial beers). Subjects from the first group are enrolled in a beer-training program. Subjects in the second group are untrained beer consumers. Results show that although both groups perform the matching task equally well, trained subjects performed better on supplemented beers and untrained subjects on commercial beers. Examination of the generated vocabulary shows that 44% of the terms are common to trained and untrained subjects. However, an analysis of the terms' efficiency shows that whereas for trained subjects, precise terms are more efficient than intensity or hedonic terms; the opposite is observed for untrained subjects. This suggests that it is not the term itself that is important but the common reference associated to it. 相似文献

The deposition of lignin during plant–pathogen interactions is thought to play a role in plant defence. However, the function of lignification genes in plant disease resistance is poorly understood. In this article, we provide genetic evidence that the primary genes involved in lignin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis, CAD-C and CAD-D , act as essential components of defence to virulent and avirulent strains of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato , possibly through the salicylic acid defence pathway. Thus, in contrast with cellulose synthesis, whose alteration leads to an increase in disease resistance, alteration of the cell wall lignin content leads directly or indirectly to defects in some defence components. 相似文献

The ability of a sufficient number of individuals to disperse is crucial for long‐term survival of populations. However, dispersal is often energetically costly, and thus is expected to trade‐off against other life‐history traits. In insect pest species, the occurrence of individuals with high flight activity challenges management practices. We performed artificial selection on flight activity and measured correlated responses to selection in the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita (= Cydia) molesta, a widely distributed and expanding lepidopteran pest of fruit crops. Both sexes rapidly responded to the imposed regime of divergent selection, indicating an adaptive potential of flight activity in this species. Upward‐selected moths died sooner than downward‐selected ones, providing evidence for a cost of flight activity to adult survival, reputedly associated with enhanced metabolic rates. Oppositely‐selected females had similar total reproductive output, disproving a trade‐off between dispersal and reproduction, although females with higher flight activity laid their eggs sooner. The ratio of body weight to forewing surface (forewing loading) did not significantly differ between selected lines. The present study contributes to the understanding of dispersal evolution, and also provides new insights into life‐history theory as well as important baseline data for the improvement of pest management practices. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 879–889. 相似文献

Sexual differentiation of the neural control of reproductivefunction with respect to both gonadotropin secretion and sexualbehavior is thought to result from exposure of the brain totesticular androgens during a very restricted or critical periodof CNS differentiation and development, when the tissue is competentto respond to the hormone, and after which it is refractoryor responds in a reversible manner. This paper reviews the cellularaspects of sexual differentiation with particular emphasis onthe morphological expression of the gonadal hormonal effectsin the adult brain. It presents experimental evidence for themorphogenetic basis for the observed steroid effects by showinghow the addition of steroid to undifferentiated hypothalamiccultures produces a selective neuritic response that is steroid-dependent.These results suggest that since afferent axonal input and temporalfactors are critical for dendritic and synaptic differentiation,steroid-induced variations in neuritic development could resultin gender-specific responses seen in sexual differentiationof reproductive function. 相似文献
