Urbanization is a global process contributing to the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats. Many studies have focused on the biological response of terrestrial taxa and habitats to urbanization. However, little is known regarding the consequences of urbanization on freshwater habitats, especially small lentic systems. In this study, we examined aquatic macro‐invertebrate diversity (family and species level) and variation in community composition between 240 urban and 782 nonurban ponds distributed across the United Kingdom. Contrary to predictions, urban ponds supported similar numbers of invertebrate species and families compared to nonurban ponds. Similar gamma diversity was found between the two groups at both family and species taxonomic levels. The biological communities of urban ponds were markedly different to those of nonurban ponds, and the variability in urban pond community composition was greater than that in nonurban ponds, contrary to previous work showing homogenization of communities in urban areas. Positive spatial autocorrelation was recorded for urban and nonurban ponds at 0–50 km (distance between pond study sites) and negative spatial autocorrelation was observed at 100–150 km and was stronger in urban ponds in both cases. Ponds do not follow the same ecological patterns as terrestrial and lotic habitats (reduced taxonomic richness) in urban environments; in contrast, they support high taxonomic richness and contribute significantly to regional faunal diversity. Individual cities are complex structural mosaics which evolve over long periods of time and are managed in diverse ways. This facilitates the development of a wide range of environmental conditions and habitat niches in urban ponds which can promote greater heterogeneity between pond communities at larger scales. Ponds provide an opportunity for managers and environmental regulators to conserve and enhance freshwater biodiversity in urbanized landscapes whilst also facilitating key ecosystem services including storm water storage and water treatment. 相似文献

Symbiodinium is a diverse genus of unicellular dinoflagellate symbionts associating with various marine protists and invertebrates. Although the broadscale diversity and phylogenetics of the Symbiodinium complex is well established, there have been surprisingly few data on fine‐scale population structure and biogeography of these dinoflagellates. Yet population‐level processes contribute strongly to the biology of Symbiodinium, including how anthropogenic‐driven global climate change impacts these symbionts and their host associations. Here, we present a synthesis of population‐level characteristics for Symbiodinium, with an emphasis on how phylogenetic affinities, dynamics within and among host individuals, and a propensity towards clonality shape patterns on and across reefs. Major inferences include the following: (i) Symbiodinium populations within individual hosts are comprised mainly of cells belonging to a single or few genetic clones. (ii) Symbiont populations exhibit a mixed mode of reproduction, wherein at least one sexual recombination event occurs in the genealogy between most genotypes, but clonal propagation predominates overall. (iii) Mutualistic Symbiodinium do not perpetually persist outside their hosts, instead undergoing turnover and replacement via the continuous shedding of viable clonal cells from host individuals. (iv) Symbiont populations living in the same host, but on different reefs, are often genetically subdivided, suggesting low connectivity, adaptation to local conditions, or prolific asexual reproduction and low effective population sizes leading to disproportionate success within and among hosts. Overall, this synthesis forms a basis for future investigations of coral symbiosis ecology and evolution as well as delimitation of species boundaries in Symbiodinium and other eukaryotic microorganisms. 相似文献

Monthly measurements of heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and cardiac output were made on active and hibernating marmots from the time of emergence from hibernation through the next hibernation period. From these measurements cardiac index, stroke index, and total peripheral resistance were calculated on the basis of estimated lean body mass. Heart rate was low after emergence (132 +/- 9.5 beats (B)/min), peaked in August (160 +/- 9.3 B/min), and then fell slightly in September and October. During hibernation heart rate fell to 9 +/- 1.1 B/min. Mean arterial pressure, which was low in early spring (101 +/- 6.9 mm Hg), rose to a peak value in June (131 +/- 7.7 mm Hg) and remained essentially unchanged until hibernation when it fell to 52 +/- 4.0 mm Hg. Cardiac index (61 +/- 4.9 ml/kg min) in March rose to a peak in May (83 +/- 8.5 ml/kg min) and fell linearly until October. There was an additional drop in cardiac index during hibernation (7.6 +/- 0.9 ml/kg min). Total peripheral resistance increased linearly from the time of emergence until October. Most of this change was due to the decrease in cardiac index. Stroke index showed no significant changes in the prehibernation period, but increased by 55% during hibernation. Maintenance of arterial pressure in the months preceding hibernation in the face of diminishing cardiac index indicate that alterations in vasomotor tone or shifts in patterns of blood flow occurred prior to the hibernation period. 相似文献

It is hypothesized that human faces judged to be attractive by people possess two features—averageness and symmetry—that promoted adaptive mate selection in human evolutionary history by way of production of offspring with parasite resistance. Facial composites made by combining individual faces are judged to be attractive, and more attractive than the majority of individual faces. The composites possess both symmetry and averageness of features. Facial averageness may reflect high individual protein heterozygosity and thus an array of proteins to which parasites must adapt. Heterozygosity may be an important defense of long-lived hosts against parasites when it occurs in portions of the genome that do not code for the essential features of complex adaptations. In this case heterozygosity can create a hostile microenvironment for parasites without disrupting adaptation. Facial bilateral symmetry is hypothesized to affect positive beauty judgments because symmetry is a certification of overall phenotypic quality and developmental health, which may be importantly influenced by parasites. Certain secondary sexual traits are influenced by testosterone, a hormone that reduces immunocompetence. Symmetry and size of the secondary sexual traits of the face (e.g., cheek bones) are expected to correlate positively and advertise immunocompetence honestly and therefore to affect positive beauty judgments. Facial attractiveness is predicted to correlate with attractive, nonfacial secondary sexual traits; other predictions from the view that parasite-driven selection led to the evolution of psychological adaptations of human beauty perception are discussed. The view that human physical attractiveness and judgments about human physical attractiveness evolved in the context of parasite-driven selection leads to the hypothesis that both adults and children have a species-typical adaptation to the problem of identifying and favoring healthy individuals and avoiding parasite-susceptible individuals. It is proposed that this adaptation guides human decisions about nepotism and reciprocity in relation to physical attractiveness. 相似文献

Hitchhiking effects of advantageous mutations have been invoked to explain
reduced polymorphism in regions of low crossing-over in Drosophila. Besides
reducing DNA heterozygosity, hitchhiking effects should produce strong
linkage disequilibrium and a frequency spectrum skewed toward an excess of
rare polymorphisms (compared to the neutral expectation). We measured DNA
polymorphism in a Zimbabwe population of D. melanogaster at three loci,
yellow, achaete, and suppressor of forked, located in regions of reduced
crossing-over. Similar to previously published surveys of these genomic
regions in other populations, we observed low levels of nucleotide
variability. However, the frequency spectrum was compatible with a neutral
model, and there was abundant evidence for recombination in the history of
the yellow and ac genes. Thus, some aspects of the data cannot be accounted
for by a simple hitchhiking model. An alternative hypothesis, background
selection, might be compatible with the observed patterns of linkage
disequilibrium and the frequency spectrum. However, this model cannot
account for the observed reduction in nucleotide heterozygosity. Thus,
there is currently no satisfactory theoretical model for the data from the
tip and base of the X chromosome in D. melanogaster.

Oligogalacturonic acids (OGAs), derived from plant cell wall pectin, have
been implicated in a number of signal transduction pathways involved in
growth, development and defense responses of higher plants. This study
investigates the size range of OGAs capable of inducing ethylene synthesis
in tomato plants, and demonstrates that in contrast with many other
effects, only short chain OGAs are active. Oligomers across a range of DP
from 2-15 were separated and purified to homogeneity by QAE-Sephadex anion
exchange chromatography using a novel elution system. The OGAs were applied
to tomato plants and assayed for their ability to induce ethylene gas
release and changes in steady state levels of mRNA encoding the ethylene
forming enzyme aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO). The study
demonstrated that only OGAs in the size range of DP4-6 were active both in
eliciting ACO expression and in the production of ethylene.

One of the most spectacular motions is the generation of the acrosomal process in the limulus sperm. On contact with the egg, the sperm generates a 60-mum-long process that literally drills its way through the jelly surrounding the egg. This irresversible reaction takes only a few seconds. We suggested earlier that this motion is driven by a change in twist of the actin filaments comprising the acrosomal process. In this paper we analyze the so-called false discharge, a reversible reaction, in which the acrosomal filament bundle extends laterally from the base of the sperm and not anteriorly from the apex. Unlike the true discharge, which is straight, the false discharge is helical. Before extension, the filament bundle is coiled about the base of the sperm. In the coil, the bundle is not smoothly bent but consists of arms (straight segments) and elbows (corners) so that the coil looks like a 14-sided polygon. The extension of the false discharge works as follows: starting at the base of the bundle, the filaments change their twist which concomitantly changes the orientations of the elbows relative to each other; that is, in the coil, the elbows all like in a common plane, but after the change in twist, the plane of each elbow is rotated to be perpendicular to that of its neighbors. This change transforms the bundle from a compact coil into an extended left- handed helix. Because the basal end of the bundle is unconstrained, the extension is lateral. The true discharge works the same way but starts at the apical end of the bundle. The apical end, however, is constrained by its passage through the nuclear canal, which directs the extention anteriorly. Unlike the false discharge, during the true discharge the elbows are melted out, making the reaction irreversible. This study shows that rapid movement can be regenerated by actin without myosin and gives us insight into the molecular mechanism. 相似文献

The calculation of many derived fermentation variables such as the respiratory quotient (RQ) and mass transfer coefficient (K(L)a) requires the differences between the molar percentages of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the fermentor inlet and exit gas, called the %OUR and %CER. Noise and bias in %CER data is of order that in the exit gas carbon dioxide analysis. However, the relative amount of noise in the %OUR is one to two orders of magnitude greater than the noise in the raw oxygen analyses because the %OUR is calculated as a small difference between two large quantities. The noise in the %OUR is white with a Gaussian amplitude probability distribution of absolute standard deviation 0.0145. Purified elastin was hydrolysed with HCl and manipulated under conditions that minimized oxidation. Gel-permeation chromatography on polyacrylamide gel and ion-exchange chromatography on dextran cation-exchanger each resulted in the separation of a series of yellow fluorescent fractions. These hitherto unreported ampholytes have fluorescence spectra that approximate to that of the intact protein, and account for its characteristic optical properties. Since the coloured fluorophores are confined to enzyme-resistant regions of the protein molecule they appear to have important structural implications. 相似文献
