Human oestrus     
For several decades, scholars of human sexuality have almost uniformly assumed that women evolutionarily lost oestrus--a phase of female sexuality occurring near ovulation and distinct from other phases of the ovarian cycle in terms of female sexual motivations and attractivity. In fact, we argue, this long-standing assumption is wrong. We review evidence that women's fertile-phase sexuality differs in a variety of ways from their sexuality during infertile phases of their cycles. In particular, when fertile in their cycles, women are particularly sexually attracted to a variety of features that likely are (or, ancestrally, were) indicators of genetic quality. As women's fertile-phase sexuality shares with other vertebrate females' fertile-phase sexuality a variety of functional and physiological features, we propose that the term oestrus appropriately applies to this phase in women. We discuss the function of women's non-fertile or extended sexuality and, based on empirical findings, suggest ways that fertile-phase sexuality in women has been shaped to partly function in the context of extra-pair mating. Men are particularly attracted to some features of fertile-phase women, but probably based on by-products of physiological changes males have been selected to detect, not because women signal their cycle-based fertility status.  相似文献

Previous research indicates that the scent of developmentalstability (low fluctuating asymmetry, FA) is attractive to womenwho are fertile (at high-conception risk points in their menstrualcycles), but not to other women or men. Prior research alsoindicates that the scent of dissimilarity in major histocompatibilitycomplex (MHC) genes may play a role in human mate choice. Westudied the scent attractiveness to the opposite sex of t-shirtsworn for 2 nights' sleep. Our results indicate that the twoolfactory systems are independent. We repeated previous resultsfrom studies of the scent of symmetry. We repeated previousresults from MHC research in part; men, but not women, showeda preference for t-shirts with the scent of MHC dissimilarity.Women's scent ratings of t-shirts were uncorrelated with thewearer's MHC dissimilarity and allele frequency, but positivelycorrelated with the wearer's MHC heterozygosity. Fertile womendid not exhibit any MHC trait preferences. Women's preferencefor the scent of men who were heterozygous for MHC alleles maybe stronger in women who are at infertile cycle points. Menpreferred the scent of common MHC alleles, which may functionto avoid mates with rare alleles that exhibit gestational drive.Men also preferred the scent of women at fertile cycle points.The scent of facially attractive women, but not men, was preferred.Neither FA nor facial attractiveness in either sex correlatedwith MHC dissimilarity to others, MHC heterozygosity, or MHCallelic rarity.  相似文献

The Hawaiian Islands represent one of the most geographically remote locations in the Indo-Pacific, and are a refuge for rare, endemic life. The diversity of symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium sp.) inhabiting zooxanthellate corals and other symbiotic cnidarians from the High Islands region was surveyed. From the 18 host genera examined, there were 20 genetically distinct symbiont types (17 in clade C, 1 in clade A, 1 in clade B, and 1 in clade D) distinguished by internal transcribed spacer region 2 sequences. Most types were found to associate with a particular host genus or species and nearly half of them have not been identified in surveys of Western and Eastern Pacific hosts. A clear dominant generalist symbiont is lacking among Hawaiian cnidarians. This is in marked contrast with the symbiont community structures of the western Pacific and Caribbean, which are dominated by a few prevalent generalist symbionts inhabiting numerous host taxa. Geographic isolation, low host diversity, and a high proportion of coral species that directly transmit their symbionts from generation to generation are implicated in the formation of a coral reef community exhibiting high symbiont diversity and specificity.Communicated by H.R. Principal component analysis (PCA) has been used for the modeling of nonlinear chromatography under overload conditions. A 10-fold range of crude erythromycin samples were loaded onto columns with different stationary-phase chemistries (2 polystyrene, 1 methacrylate) in direct proportion to the bed volumes. The elution profiles indicated slightly concave isotherms for the polystyrene supports and a convex Langmuirian isotherm for the methacrylic support used. The principal component models accounted for over 98% of the original variance in the data for all three columns and were able to give excellent models of complete chromatograms in the absence of first-principle models or physicochemical data. Correlations between sample mass and the principal component scores were made for each that were consistent for the column types despite the different geometries and stationary phases. Linear relationships with high correlation coefficients were observed when the scores of the same principal component were compared between columns. Such correlations offer considerable potential for modeling of nonlinear chromatography.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the frequency of disability in young people and adults admitted to hospital with a head injury and to estimate the annual incidence in the community.DesignProspective, hospital based cohort study, with one year follow up of sample stratified by coma score.SettingFive acute hospitals in Glasgow.Subjects2962 patients (aged 14 years or more) with head injury; 549 (71%) of the 769 patients selected for follow up participated.ResultsSurvival with moderate or severe disability was common after mild head injury (47%, 95% confidence interval 42% to 52%) and similar to that after moderate (45%, 35% to 56%) or severe injury (48%, 36% to 60%). By extrapolation from the population identified (90% of whom had mild injuries), it was estimated that annually in Glasgow (population 909 498) 1400 young people and adults are still disabled one year after head injury.ConclusionThe incidence of disability in young people and adults admitted with a head injury is higher than expected. This reflects the high rate of sequelae previously unrecognised in the large number of patients admitted to hospital with an apparently mild head injury.  相似文献

The voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1.3 plays an essential role in modulating membrane excitability in many cell types. Kv1.3 is a heavily glycosylated membrane protein. Two successive N-glycosylation consensus sites, N228NS and N229ST, are present on the S1-S2 linker of rat Kv1.3. Our data suggest that Kv1.3 contains only one N-glycan and it is predominantly attached to N229 in the S1-S2 extracellular linker. Preventing N-glycosylation of Kv1.3 significantly decreased its surface protein level and surface conductance density level, which were ~?49% and ~?46% respectively of the level of wild type. Supplementation of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), l-fucose or N-acetylneuraminic acid to the culture medium promoted Kv1.3 surface protein expression, whereas supplementation of d-glucose, d-mannose or d-galactose did not. Among the three effective monosaccharides/derivatives, adding GlcNAc appeared to reduce sialic acid content and increase the degree of branching in the N-glycan of Kv1.3, suggesting that the N-glycan structure and composition had changed. Furthermore, the cell surface half-life of the Kv1.3 surface protein was increased upon GlcNAc supplementation, indicating that it had decreased internalization. The GlcNAc effect appears to apply mainly to membrane proteins containing complex type N-glycans. Thus, N-glycosylation promotes Kv1.3 cell surface expression; supplementation of GlcNAc increased Kv1.3 surface protein level and decreased its internalization, presumably by a combined effect of decreased branch size and increased branching of the N-glycan.  相似文献

Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) is the most widely used animal model of progressive renal disease. Although renal interstitial fibrosis is commonly used as an end point, recent studies reveal that obstructive injury to the glomerulotubular junction leads to the formation of atubular glomeruli. To quantitate the effects of UUO on the remainder of the nephron, renal tubular and interstitial responses were characterized in mice 7 and 14 days after UUO or sham operation under anesthesia. Fractional proximal tubular mass, cell proliferation, and cell death were measured by morphometry. Superoxide formation was identified by nitro blue tetrazolium, and oxidant injury was localized by 4-hydroxynonenol and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine. Fractional areas of renal vasculature, interstitial collagen, α-smooth muscle actin, and fibronectin were also measured. After 14 days of UUO, the obstructed kidney loses 19% of parenchymal mass, with a 65% reduction in proximal tubular mass. Superoxide formation is localized to proximal tubules, which undergo oxidant injury, apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, with widespread mitochondrial loss, resulting in tubular collapse. In contrast, mitosis and apoptosis increase in dilated collecting ducts, which remain patent through epithelial cell remodeling. Relative vascular volume fraction does not change, and interstitial matrix components do not exceed 15% of total volume fraction of the obstructed kidney. These unique proximal and distal nephron cellular responses reflect differential "fight-or-flight" responses to obstructive injury and provide earlier indexes of renal injury than do interstitial compartment responses. Therapies to prevent or retard progression of renal disease should include targeting proximal tubule injury as well as interstitial fibrosis.  相似文献

Highly stable symbioses among western Atlantic brooding corals   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
The reproductive mode of corals largely determines how zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium spp.) are acquired. Typically, broadcast spawning corals obtain symbionts from the surrounding environment, whereas most brooders transfer symbionts from maternal parent to offspring. Brooding corals are therefore predicted to harbor stable communities of Symbiodinium. This study documents the associations between Symbiodinium spp. and brooding corals in response to seasonal environmental fluctuations. Between March 2002 and December 2005, endosymbiont identity was determined seasonally from replicate colonies (n = 6) of three brooding species, Agaricia agaricites, Porites astreoides and Siderastrea radians, from shallow environments (1–4 m) of the Florida Keys and Bahamas. Symbionts were identified via denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region. No change was detected in the Symbiodinium communities harbored within these brooding colonies. Additionally, no change in symbiosis was observed through a moderate bleaching event, thereby demonstrating that some bleached corals recover without changing symbionts.  相似文献

Eupatorium were examined by sequencing the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and restriction site analysis of chloroplast DNA. Molecular data provided strong evidence that (1) this genus originated in North America, (2) the genus diverged into three morphological species groups, Eutrochium, Traganthes and Uncasia in North America, and (3) one of the North American Uncasia lineages migrated into temperate Europe and eastern Asia over the Bering land bridge. The estimated divergence times support a late Miocene to early Pliocene migration from North America to Eurasia via the Bering land bridge. A European species was sister to all of the eastern Asian species examined. The disjunct distribution pattern of the genus Eupatorium is incongruent with the classical Arcto-Tertiary geoflora concept.
