The fate of single somites has not been analyzed from a comparative perspective with modern cell-marking methods. Most of what we know is based on work using quail-chick chimeras. Consequently, to what degree cell fate has been conserved despite the anatomical differences among vertebrates is unknown. We have analyzed the cell fate of the cranialmost somites, with the focus on somite two, in the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). Somite cells were marked by injection of dextran-fluorescein and detected using immunofluorescence after 2 months of development in paraffin sections. Our data confirm and extend earlier studies based on classical histology in salamanders. We show that somite two contributes to different muscles, skeletal elements, and connective tissues of the head and cranial trunk region. Cells from somites two and three migrate latero-ventrally and contribute to the hypobranchial muscles mm. geniohyoideus and rectus cervicis. We provide evidence that the specific formation of the hypobranchial musculature from ventral processes of the somites might be variable in different classes of vertebrates. We further demonstrate that mm. cucullaris and dilatator laryngis, which were earlier thought to have a branchial origin, arise from somitic material in a manner very similar to the findings in quail-chick chimeras. Background
Testosterone (T) controls male Syrian hamster sexual behavior, however, neither of T''s primary metabolites, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol (E2), even in highly supraphysiological doses, fully restores sexual behavior in castrated hamsters. DHT and T apparently interact with androgen receptors differentially to control male sexual behavior (MSB), but whether these two hormones act synergistically or antagonistically to control MSB has received scant experimental attention and is addressed in the present study.Methodology/Principal Findings
Sexually experienced male Syrian hamsters were gonadectomized and monitored 5 weeks later to confirm elimination of the ejaculatory reflex (week 0), at which time they received subcutaneous DHT-filled or empty capsules that remained in situ for the duration of the experiment. Daily injections of a physiological dose of 25 µg T or vehicle commenced two weeks after capsule implantation. MSB was tested 2, 4 and 5 weeks after T treatment began. DHT capsules were no more effective than control treatment for long-term restoration of ejaculation. Combined DHT + T treatment, however, restored the ejaculatory reflex more effectively than T alone, as evidenced by more rapid recovery of ejaculatory behavior, shorter ejaculation latencies, and a greater number of ejaculations in 30 minute tests.Conclusions/Significance
DHT and T administered together restored sexual behavior to pre-castration levels more rapidly than did T alone, whereas DHT and vehicle were largely ineffective. The additive actions of DHT and T on MSB are discussed in relation to different effects of these androgens on androgen receptors in the male hamster brain mating circuit. 相似文献64.

The aim of our study was to explain the effect of elevated homocysteine (measured by HPLC) on haemostatic activity of plasma from breast cancer patients (fibrin polymerization and lysis; the thrombin and prothrombin time), because homocysteine (Hcys) induces changes in haemostasis, as well blood clotting as fibrinolysis. Patients were hospitalized in Department of Oncological Surgery, Medical University of Lodz, Poland. All patients have not had preadjuvant therapy, and samples from patients were taken before surgery. We observed that changes of selected parameters of haemostatic properties of plasma, e.g., the prothrombin time and thrombin time were prolonged in plasma from invasive breast cancer when compared with the control group (healthy subjects) and patients with benign breast diseases. Our results showed also that the correlation between the increased amount of Hcys and changes of selected parameters of haemostasis in invasive breast cancer patients exists. Considering the data presented in this study, we suggest that the elevated Hcys in invasive breast cancer patients may induce the changes of haemostatic properties of plasma isolated from these patients. 相似文献

This article selectively reviews research concerning nicotine's effects on cognition, including the neurobiological mechanism for these effects, task and experimental features that may be important for elucidating these effects, and why these effects may have amplified motivational significance among smokers with cognitive deficit. Nicotine has effects on various cognitive processes, though most studies in humans have focused on the amelioration of cognitive deficits experienced during drug withdrawal. The direct cognitive-enhancing effect of nicotine remains a controversial topic. The relationship between attentional and non-attentional cognitive effects of nicotine is discussed in the context of cognitive self-medication. Further research should include theory-driven examination of cognitive effects of nicotine, and develop targeted smoking cessation programs based on an improved understanding of the role of cognitive self-medication in high-risk individuals. 相似文献

Pathology of Anopheles stephensi after infection with Plasmodium berghei berghei. I. Mortality rate.
The mortality of P. berghei-infected Anopheles stephensi females can be about 30% higher during the first three days than in normal blood-fed mosquitoes. As expected the mortality is higher after feeding on highly infected mice but also depends on the date of feeding and the temperature. Infected mosquitoes kept at 25 degrees C die more often than those kept at 21 degrees C. On the other hand sporozoite production needs the low temperature of 21 degrees C. So the sporozoite production rate falls with increasing temperature, and the mortality rate increases. 相似文献

Coronary angiographic trials have demonstrated that lowering cholesterol can slow the progression of atherosclerosis, limit the formation of new lesions and enhance atherosclerotic regression together with reducing the incidence of clinical events (Waters D, 1996). Spontaneous regression of coronary atherosclerotic lesions is rare. We report the case of a patient with a severe within-stent restenotic lesion whose coronary disease spontaneously regressed 12 months after initial diagnosis, allowing for medical treatment of symptoms rather than repeated intervention.
