Several genetic factors are assumed to influence developmental instability (DI). One is the level of heterozygosity, with higher levels often being associated with decreased DI; another is genetic incompatibility in hybrids, which in several cases has been shown to increase DI. The genus Bacillus includes species which have both amphigonic heterozygous reproducing populations and homozygous parthenogenetic reproducing populations (B. rossius rossius and B. r. redtenbacheri). Furthermore, Bacillus includes hybrid parthenogenetic species, which have very high levels of almost fixed heterozygosities (B. atticus, B. whitei, B. lynceorum). We investigated the phenotypic variance (σ2p) and the impact of hybridization and level of heterozygosity on DI in females from these populations and species of Bacillus. DI was estimated as fluctuating asymmetry (FA) for three bilateral traits: the labial palpus, the maxillary palpus and the antenna. For the labial palpus and maxillary palpus we found, in general, a lower level of DI in the amphigonic females compared with parthenogenetic counterparts from the same species and with parthenogenetic females from the three hybrid species. A higher DI of the antenna was found in the hybrid species when compared with both parthenogenetic and amphigonic populations of the nonhybrid species, suggesting that the genes controlling antenna development are located on the sex chromosomes. The development of the investigated bilateral characters in the hybrid species seemed to be affected more by factors relating to genetic incompatibilities as a consequence of hybridization than by the stabilizing force of increased heterozygosity. The unabated rise in atmospheric [CO2] is associated with increased air temperature. Yet, few CO2‐enrichment studies have considered pre‐industrial [CO2] or warming. Consequently, we quantified the interactive effects of growth [CO2] and temperature on photosynthesis of faster‐growing Eucalyptus saligna and slower‐growing E. sideroxylon. Well‐watered and ‐fertilized tree seedlings were grown in a glasshouse at three atmospheric [CO2] (290, 400, and 650 µL L?1), and ambient (26/18 °C, day/night) and high (ambient + 4 °C) air temperature. Despite differences in growth rate, both eucalypts responded similarly to [CO2] and temperature treatments with few interactive effects. Light‐saturated photosynthesis (Asat) and light‐ and [CO2]‐saturated photosynthesis (Amax) increased by ~50% and ~10%, respectively, with each step‐increase in growth [CO2], underpinned by a corresponding 6–11% up‐regulation of maximal electron transport rate (Jmax). Maximal carboxylation rate (Vcmax) was not affected by growth [CO2]. Thermal photosynthetic acclimation occurred such that Asat and Amax were similar in ambient‐ and high‐temperature‐grown plants. At high temperature, the thermal optimum of Asat increased by 2–7 °C across [CO2] treatments. These results are the first to suggest that photosynthesis of well‐watered and ‐fertilized eucalypt seedlings will remain strongly responsive to increasing atmospheric [CO2] in a future, warmer climate.  相似文献

The all black carrion crow ( Corvus corone corone ) and the grey and black hooded crow ( Corvus   corone cornix ) meet in a narrow hybrid zone across Europe. To evaluate the degree of genetic differentiation over the hybrid zone, we genotyped crows from the centre and edges of the zone, and from allopatric populations in northern (Scotland–Denmark–Sweden) and southern Europe (western–central northern Italy), at 18 microsatellites and at a plumage candidate gene, the MC1R gene. Allopatric and edge populations were significantly differentiated on microsatellites, and populations were isolated by distance over the hybrid zone in Italy. Single-locus analyses showed that one locus, CmeH9, differentiated populations on different sides of the zone at the same time as showing only weak separation of populations on the same side of the zone. Within the hybrid zone there was no differentiation of phenotypes at CmeH9 or at the set of microsatellites, no excess of heterozygotes among hybrids and low levels of linkage disequilibrium between markers. We did not detect any association between phenotypes and nucleotide variation at MC1R , and the two most common haplotypes occurred in very similar frequencies in carrion and hooded crows. That we found a similar degree of genetic differentiation between allopatric and edge populations irrespectively of their location in relation to the hybrid zone, no differentiation between phenotypes within the hybrid zone, and neither heterozygote excess nor consistent linkage disequilibrium in the hybrid zone, is striking considering that carrion and hooded crows are phenotypically distinct and sometimes recognised as separate species.  相似文献

1. Belowground herbivory has recently been shown to disrupt the host location behaviour of aboveground parasitoids and thereby impact plants indirect defences. Reverse interactions, on the other hand, have received little attention so far. 2. Lab and field studies were conducted to examine whether the presence of the leaf herbivore Pieris brassicae Linnaeus on brassicaceous plants influences the response of Trybliographa rapae Westwood, a specialist parasitoid of the root feeder Delia radicum Linnaeus. 3. The present results show that the attraction of the parasitoid towards host‐infested plants disappeared when these plants were also infested by P. brassicae. This absence of attraction was observed both when the complete odour blend or only undamaged leaves from damaged plants were offered, emphasising the role of systemically induced volatiles for host location in T. rapae. 4. Furthermore, the field study revealed that parasitism levels dropped from 30% on root‐infested plants to 4% on double‐infested plants. 5. The present study is the first to confirm that reduced attraction to host‐infested plants as a result of simultaneous attack by below‐ and aboveground herbivores translates into lower levels of parasitism in the field.  相似文献

The Salicaceae family comprises a large number of high‐biomass species with remarkable genetic variability and adaptation to ecological niches. Salix caprea survives in heavy metal contaminated areas, translocates and accumulates Zn/Cd in leaves. To reveal potential selective effects of long‐term heavy metal contaminations on the genetic structure and Zn/Cd accumulation capacity, 170 S. caprea isolates of four metal‐contaminated and three non‐contaminated middle European sites were analysed with microsatellite markers using Wright's F statistics. The differentiation of populations North of the Alps are more pronounced compared to the Southern ones. By grouping the isolates based on their contamination status, a weak but significant differentiation was calculated between Northern metallicolous and non‐metallicolous populations. To quantify if the contamination and genetic status of the populations correlate with Zn/Cd tolerance and the accumulation capacity, the S. caprea isolates were exposed to elevated Cd/Zn concentrations in perlite‐based cultures. Consistent with the genetic data nested anova analyses for the physiological traits find a significant difference in the Cd accumulation capacity between the Northern and Southern populations. Our data suggest that natural populations are a profitable source to uncover genetic mechanisms of heavy metal accumulation and biomass production, traits that are essential for improving phytoextraction strategies.  相似文献

A dinucleotide microsatellite‐enriched genomic library was obtained from Carica papaya L. Sixty‐nine microsatellites were evaluated on three genotypes of C. papaya and seven species of the neighbour genus Vasconcellea. Among them, 45 markers were characterized on a sample of 29 accessions of C. papaya from the Caribbean region and 11 accessions of Vasconcellea from the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador. Twenty‐four gave polymorphism in C. papaya and only four among the seven species of Vasconcellea, confirming the divergence between both genera.  相似文献

The sternum V glands are a key synapomorphy that unites Trichoptera with Lepidoptera, but their functional aspects have not been analysed from an evolutionary perspective. We examine phylogenetic trends and correlations between chemical and morphological features of these glands. The most likely ancestral gland compounds are heptan‐2‐ol, 4‐hepten‐2‐one and ‐ol, nonan‐2‐one, and 6‐nonen‐2‐one and ‐ol, making pheromone production a plausible ancestral function. The most widespread gland compounds (heptan‐2‐one and ‐ol and nonan‐2‐one and ‐ol) are not known from Apataniidae + Limnephilidae (Trichoptera), which in turn uniquely produce a number of methylated 3‐ketones and their corresponding alcohols, probably functioning as pheromones. We propose a functional connection between perforated patches on sternum IV in females and a scaly/dome‐covered area around the gland openings, as well as between perforated patches and lack of Trichoptera‐type opening muscles. We also propose a functional connection between the shape of the gland reservoirs and the presence of gland reservoir musculature. The perforated patches were significantly correlated with several gland compounds that had double bonds between carbon atoms: the double bonds may lower the viscosity of the compounds, facilitating secretion through the tiny pores of the perforated patches. The production of defensive substances in Pycnopsyche (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) is probably connected to the presence of large, compartmentalized gland reservoirs. Large glands in male Hydropsyche (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) are probably linked to male aggregation pheromone production. The relative sizes of sternum V gland reservoirs and fenestral gland reservoirs in female philopotamids (Trichoptera) suggest a complementary function of the two structures. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 561–579.  相似文献
