The daily pattern of autumn bird migration in the northern Sahara   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The temporal pattern of migration by passerine birds during the night, and their arrival during the day at the Egyptian coast and in the northern Sahara Desert was investigated. The mean direction of nocturnal migration at the coast was south-southeast, while at all desert sites it was south-southwest.
Birds arrived at the Egyptian coast only during the second half of the night which is explained by the fact that no birds could have taken off from the Mediterranean Sea. At least some of the birds landed at the coast where they spent the day before taking off shortly after sunset. These birds passed the desert sites at the expected time of day assuming a ground speed of 18 m per second. However, the origin of the birds passing the desert sites early at night is unclear. They must either have spent the day in the desert north of the study sites or they had overflown the Egyptian coast in the afternoon without landing.
The landing of birds during the day at the desert sites was bimodal. This pattern of arrival is explained either by some birds having landed at the Egyptian coast in the early morning before continuing, or by deteriorating conditions later in the day during flight or when resting in the desert, that obliged them to seek shelter at the desert sites.
A correlation between the number of migrants observed during the night and the number of resting birds in the desert on the following day suggests that an unknown proportion of birds might regularly use an intermittent migratory strategy that includes rest periods by day when crossing the desert, whereas others might adapt a non-stop migratory strategy.  相似文献

Seedlings of Ricinus communis L. cultivated in quartz sand weresupplied with a nutrient solution containing either 1 mol m–3NO3 or 1 mol m–3 NH+4 as the nitrogen source. Duringthe period between 41 and 51 d after sowing, the flows of N,C and inorganic ions between root and shoot were modelled andexpressed on a fresh weight basis. Plant growth was clearlyinhibited in the presence of NH+4. In the xylem sap the majornitrogenous solutes were nitrate (74%) or glutamine (78%) innitrate or ammonium-fed plants, respectively. The pattern ofamino acids was not markedly influenced by nitrogen nutrition;glutamine was the dominant compound in both cases. NH+4 wasnot transported in significant amounts in both treatments. Inthe phloem, nitrogen was transported almost exclusively in organicform, glutamine being the dominant nitrogenous solute, but theN-source affected the amino acids transported. Uptake of nitrogenand carbon per unit fresh weight was only slightly decreasedby ammonium. The partitioning of nitrogen was independent ofthe form of N-nutrition, although the flow of nitrogen and carbonin the phloem was enhanced in ammonium-fed plants. Cation uptakerates were halved in the presence of ammonium and lower quantitiesof K+, Na+ and Ca2+ but not of Mg2+ were transported to theshoot. As NH+4 was balanced by a 30-fold increase in chloride in thesolution, chloride uptake was increased 6-fold under ammoniumnutrition. We concluded that ammonium was predominantly assimilated inthe root. Nitrate reduction and assimilation occurred in bothshoot and root. The assimilation of ammonium in roots of ammonium-fedplants was associated with a higher respiration rate. Changes in net photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration andcontents of total C, NO3-N and reduced N were followed throughoutthe life of leaf 6 of nitrate-dependent plants of castor beanexposed to moderate salinity stress (71 mol m–3 NaCl).Salt treatment was applied for measuring mineral flows in aparallel study (Jeschke and Pate, 1991b). Concurrent measurementswere made of solute composition and C: N molar ratios and concentrationsof reduced N and collected NO3-N in phloem sap bleeding fromshallow incisions in the top and at the base of petioles andin xylem exudates from flaps of proximal leaf midribs followingpressurization of the root system. The resulting data were usedto construct empirical models of the respective economies ofC, total N, NO3 and reduced N for a sequence of defined phasesof leaf life. Water use efficiency increased 3-fold from emergenceto a maximum of 1·5 mmol CO2 mol–1 H2O before decliningto 0·5 mmol CO2 mol–1 H2O at senescence. Xylemmolar ratios of C:N varied from 1·2–2·8,with nitrate always a smaller component than reduced N. Phloemsap C:N increased from 10–40 with leaf expansion and wasthen maintained in the range of 40–50 until falling steeplyto 20 at leaf senescence. Nitrate comprised less than 1% oftotal N in all phloem sap samples. The models of C uptake, flow,and utilization showed a major role of phloem import and thenincreasingly of laminar photosynthesis in providing C for leafgrowth. The carbon budget was thereafter characterized by ratesof phloem export closely matched to net rates of CO2 fixationby the lamina. Corresponding data for total N depicted an earlymajor role of both xylem and phloem import, but the eventualdominance of xylem import as the N source for leaf growth. Cyclingof N by xylem to phloem exchange commenced before the leaf hadachieved maximum N content, and was the major contributor tophloem export until leaf senescence when mobilized N providedmost exported N. The nitrate economy of the leaf was characterizedby early establishment of tissue pools of the ion in the petioleand to a lesser extent in the lamina, continued high rates ofnitrate reduction in the lamina but negligible assimilationin the petiole, and a release through xylem of previously accumulatedNO3 from petiole to lamina. Related data for reduced N illustratedthe much greater importance of this form of N than nitrate intransport, storage and cycling of N at all stages of leaf andpetiole life. Xylem to phloem interchanges of reduced N in petiolewere minimal in comparison with cycling through the lamina.The ratio of CO2 reduction to NO3 reduction in the lamina wasat first low (57 mol mol–1) increasing to a peak valueof 294 during mature leaf functioning before declining to 190during the presenescence phase of leaf development. This patternreflected age-related effects on water use efficiency, changesin NO3 levels in the xylem stream entering the lamina, and therelatively low photosynthetic performances of very young andsenescent laminae. Evaluations of ecological restoration typically focus on associating measures of structural properties of ecosystems (e.g. species diversity) with time since restoration efforts commenced. Such studies often conclude a failure to achieve restoration goals without examining functional performance of the organism assemblages in question. We compared diversity and composition of ant assemblages and the rates of seed removal by ants in pastures, 4‐ to 10‐year old revegetated areas and remnants of Cumberland Plain Woodland, and an endangered ecological community in Sydney, Australia. Ant assemblages of forest remnant sites had significantly higher species richness, significantly different species composition and a more complex functional group structure in comparison with ant assemblages of pasture and revegetated sites, which did not differ significantly. However, the rates of seed removal by ants in revegetated sites were similar to those in forest remnants, with the rates in pasture sites being significantly lower. Approximately, one‐third of all ant species were observed to remove seeds. Forest remnant sites had significantly different assemblages of seed removing ant species from those in pasture and revegetated sites. These results demonstrate that similar ant assemblages of unrestored and restored areas can function differently, depending on habitat context. Evaluation of restoration success by quantifying ecosystem structure and function offers more insights into ecosystem recovery than reliance on structural data alone.  相似文献

Abstract Forest structure and habitat complexity have been used extensively to predict the distribution and abundance of insect assemblages in forest ecosystems. We tested empirically derived predictions of strong, consistent relationships between wasp assemblages and habitat complexity, using both field assessments and vegetation indices from remote sensing as measures of habitat complexity. Wasp samples from 26 paired ‘high and low’ complexity sites in two forests approximately 70 km apart, were compared with normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVIs) derived from multispectral videography of the survey sites. We describe a strong unequivocal link between habitat complexity and wasp communities, the patterns holding over coarse and fine landscape scales. NDVIs were also excellent predictors of habitat complexity and hence wasp community patterns. Sites with greater NDVIs consistently supported a greater abundance and species richness, and a different composition of wasps to sites with low NDVIs. Using vegetation indices from remote sensing to gauge habitat complexity has significant potential for ecosystem modelling and rapid biodiversity assessment.  相似文献

Abstract Orb web spiders face a dilemma: forage in open habitats and risk predation or forage in closed habitats to minimize risk but at reduced foraging profitability. We tested whether Argiope keyserlingi opts for safer habitats at the expense of foraging success by (i) determining habitat selection indices in open and closed habitats; (ii) marking and releasing individual juvenile, subadult and adults over two 4‐week periods to determine if life‐history stage influences habitat selection; and (iii) determining the biotic and abiotic environmental parameters that relate to A. keyserlingi abundance. We found that A. keyserlingi selected closed habitats. Sedge and anthropogenic structures were selected and trees were avoided. Juveniles were never found in open habitats, most likely because of high postdispersal mortality. Subadults and adults may shift from closed to open habitats while juveniles never shifted habitat. Foliage density, plant height, potential prey abundance, and mantid and bird abundance were correlated with A. keyserlingi abundance, with only bird abundance explaining habitat selection. We measured web capture area, spiral distance (distance between spiral threads) and the number of decoration arms (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4) in the field and did laboratory experiments to test the influence of (i) space and vegetation; (ii) prey abundance; and (iii) web damage, on web architecture. Argiope keyserlingi webs exhibited geometric plasticity by having larger prey capture areas and spiral distances in open habitats. Decoration design did not differ between habitats however. Variation in space availability, air temperature, prey abundance and web damage explained the variations in web architecture. Potential prey size and diversity differed between habitats but prey abundance did not. As large prey may be important for spider survivorship, foraging success appears to be compromised by occupying closed habitats.  相似文献

A new species, Pleurotricha indica n. sp., is described, characterized by an average size of 220 × 119 μm, a firm and inflexible body, six rows of dorsal kineties, one left and two right rows of marginal cirri, and an “Oxytricha-like” pattern of ventral cirri. The parts of the macronucleus are variable in shape and number. The comparison with other members of the genus shows that P. indica differs from other congeneric species in the combination of these characters.  相似文献
