Abstract Establishing what are the underlying causes of species range limits is of fundamental interest in ecology. We followed the fate of individually mapped plants of three endemic New Zealand high‐alpine species of Myosotis, over a period of 9 years. The species provide contrasts in their geographical range and their demography. Myosotis oreophila Petrie is rare and extremely localized (c. 0.5 ha extent), Myosotis cheesemanii Petrie is regionally endemic, and Myosotis pulvinaris Hook. f. is more widespread. All three occur on the Dunstan Mountains, Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand within a 1‐km radius, and individual plants were followed in four permanent plots. The three species differed in their longevity and in population variability, with the most widespread species (M. pulvinaris) having the lowest survival (61% per year), the fewest old plants (only 3% of plants present in 1993 surviving until 2001), no increase in survival rates with age, and the most variability in total numbers across years. Both of the rare species, M. oreophila and M. cheesemanii, had higher survival (75% and 88%, respectively, per year) especially for older plants, many older plants (20% and 59%, respectively, of 1993 plants surviving until 2001), and lower variability in total numbers across years. These results are consistent with other studies showing that rare plant species tend to have higher inertia than more common congeners. The range limits of M. oreophila showed a high level of spatial constancy on a scale of metres over the 9 years, despite 80% turnover in plants during that time. The M. oreophila population showed lower mean densities of plants near to the population boundaries, identical age‐specific survival rates, but lower flowering probabilities, than the core of the population. We were unable to detect any abiotic differences between inside and outside the M. oreophila range in terms of topography, soil parent materials, microclimate or through manipulation of snow cover. Disturbance may be a factor affecting the distribution of M. cheesemanii but limiting factors for M. oreophila and M. pulvinaris are likely to be biotic (competition, seed limitation, dispersal capacity) and/or historic. Tabletop Mountain in the Northern Territory is a sandstone plateau topped in part by a residual laterite soil. The vegetation of the plateau was mapped and transects placed to cover the mapping units in which eucalypts were dominant or shared dominance. A polythetic divisive classification of the transect floristic data was largely congruent with the mapping units, which also differentiated the dominants. Topography and soils have an apparently strong influence on the nature of the vegetation through their influence on the periodicity and intensity of drought and Waterlogging. However, differences in soil fertility and understorey flammability are postulated to be important in discriminating several of the mapped vegetation types. The flora of Tabletop more closely resembles that of the Alligator Rivers region than that of the Mitchell Plateau or Weipa. Some of the communities differentiated at Tabletop are related floristically to some of the communities differentiated in the Alligator Rivers region and at Gove.  相似文献

Worldwide measurements of nearly 130 C3 species covering all major plant functional types are analysed in conjunction with model simulations to determine the effects of mesophyll conductance (gm) on photosynthetic parameters and their relationships estimated from A/Ci curves. We find that an assumption of infinite gm results in up to 75% underestimation for maximum carboxylation rate Vcmax, 60% for maximum electron transport rate Jmax, and 40% for triose phosphate utilization rate Tu. Vcmax is most sensitive, Jmax is less sensitive, and Tu has the least sensitivity to the variation of gm. Because of this asymmetrical effect of gm, the ratios of Jmax to Vcmax, Tu to Vcmax and Tu to Jmax are all overestimated. An infinite gm assumption also limits the freedom of variation of estimated parameters and artificially constrains parameter relationships to stronger shapes. These findings suggest the importance of quantifying gm for understanding in situ photosynthetic machinery functioning. We show that a nonzero resistance to CO2 movement in chloroplasts has small effects on estimated parameters. A non‐linear function with gm as input is developed to convert the parameters estimated under an assumption of infinite gm to proper values. This function will facilitate gm representation in global carbon cycle models.  相似文献

  • 1 Egg cannibalism is a form of infanticide that has been implicated in the evolution of guarding of eggs and immatures in some species of insects. The milkweed leaf beetle, Labidomera clivicollis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), exhibits three types of egg cannibalism in the field: siblicide, cannibalism of eggs by older larvae from earlier hatching egg clutches, and cannibalism of eggs by adult females. Unlike their close relative, L.suterella (Choe, 1989), female L.clivicollis do not guard their eggs or immatures. They move slowly about a patch of milkweeds laying multiple egg clutches.
  • 2 First instar and older larvae cannibalized eggs in two geographically separated study populations (subspecies) in Austin, Texas, and Bridgeport, New York, U.S.A. Although adult females of both populations cannibalized eggs in the laboratory, only the Texas subspecies, L.c.rogersii, exhibited such cannibalism in the field.
  • 3 In the field, correlates of siblicide varied both temporally (within subspecies) and spatially (between subspecies) in terms of whether they were statistically significant, but trends were all in the same direction. Group size was positively correlated with hatching success and siblicide, but negatively correlated with other types of predation. Siblicide was also positively correlated with egg density in a laboratory study of the Texas subspecies, L.c.rogersii.
  • 4 In the laboratory, an average of 15–17% of L.c.clivicollis eggs never developed embryos. Although these were almost always cannibalized, some viable eggs were also eaten and there is no evidence that females increased the proportion of infertile eggs they laid to increase siblicide.
  • 5 Field data and laboratory experiments showed that adult female L. c.rogersii cannibalized eggs while males rarely did. Females preferentially ate the eggs of other females over their own eggs in an experiment that removed spatial cues.
  • 6 Although the selective context of cannibalism is not demonstrated here, I suggest that females may increase siblicide by increasing egg density and may cannibalize eggs to protect their own eggs from being eaten by second and third instar larvae produced by other females.

The stomatogastric nervous system of crustaceans, which controlsthe four parts ofthe foregut, is subject to modulation at alllevels, sensory, central and motor. Modulation of the centralpattern generators, which are themselves made up largely ofmotor neurons, providesfor increased behavioral flexibilityin a variety of ways. First, each of the pattern generatorscan be reconfigured to give multiple outputs. Second, the "boundaries"of the different pattern generators are in fact somewhat fluid,so that the neuronal composition of the pattern generators canbe altered. For example, neurons can switch from one patterngenerator toanother, or two or more pattern generators can fuseto generate an entirely new pattern and thereby produce a newbehavior. The mechanisms responsible for many of these modulationsinclude alterations of both intrinsic properties and synapticinteractions between neurons. In addition, the alteration ofmembrane properties contributes more directly to the behavioraloutput by changing action potential frequency. Finally, themuscles of the stomatogastric system can themselves be modulated,with the cpvl muscle, for example, becoming an endogenous oscillatorin the presence of either dopamine or the peptide FMRFamide.  相似文献

Leeches have distinct advantages for investigating the behavioralfunctions of monoamines. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)is synthesized by a population of identifiable neurons and storedat unusually high intracellular concentrations. Identified serotonergicneurons evoke biting, salivation and pharyngeal pumping, andneuronal 5-HT is required for these physiological componentsof leech feeding behavior. Those stimuli which initiate andterminate ingestion by intact leeches, excite and inhibit the5-HT neurons respectively. Hence, leech 5-HT neurons are activein contexts in which the animal feeds. In leeches representingdifferent orders of Hirudinea, homologous 5-HT neurons appearto have similar roles in feeding. Serotonin not only affectssalivation, biting and pharyngeal peristalsis in these annelids,but also in nematodes, arthropods and molluscs. These comparativedata suggest that serotonin may function generally in the modulationof feeding.  相似文献

The response of sclerotia of Sclerotium cepivorum to a number of plant extracts and nutrient solutions was tested, aseptically, on agars, silica gels, filter paper discs, and on columns of soil. There was no specific response of sclerotia to extracts of Allium species in any of these experiments, whereas in unsterile soil consistently high levels of germination were obtained only with Allium extracts. It was shown that sclerotia are subject to the mycostatic influence of unsterile soil. With S. cepivorum soil mycostasis appears to be specifically reversed by Allium species or by water extracts made from them.  相似文献
